The collected works of nuts - Page 1

I don't know why, this morning I switched on my octane, but it is very slower than the other days.
I didn't install anything before, I can hear the hdd scratching a lot now.., I have already had this problem, I reinstalled Irix and it was resolved, but now, I can't reinstall it until I finish to set up a Linux-server to share Irix cds.

How I can repair my system?
Thanks, I found "configmon" that it was using more 320Mb of RAM
I wanna use my octane to create my own movies with softwares like m$ moviemaker.
So I don't know what are the names of theses softwares on IRIX. And I 'll be happy to found one that can use xvid or mpg and mpg-2 codecs.

And which software to create some special effects ?
I've installed realsoft 3D 5.1.26 beta, but when I wanna run it I've got Bus error due to an incompatible libpng version: I have libpng-1.2.8 and r3d required 1.0.15
it doesn't work for me

I use a custom resolution (1680x1050) with 24bits colors.
I found why it doesn't work: my 1680x1050 file has smoething wrong. it works when I switch to 1280x1024_60 standard resolution
It didn't work with my last 1680x1050_60 file, and nor celestia and blender worked. I try 1280x1024_60. it works, but I don't know why, I have blue sun with die-planeten.

I re-create a 1680x1050_60. celestia, blender and die-planeten run, but I have a lot of artfacts and stanges colors.
I'll try the cube

Hi,
I know we can find winNT 3.x or 4.O for mips cpus. Can I install it on a SGI octane? If yes, by LAN?
thanx, I'd like to try another system with a gui than IRIX
My question is, if it's possible to use a gnu system with IRIX kernel with basic IRIX's tools like software manager, chkconfig... We could keep coherence with GPL softwares. No?
I think to a system that's using Irix kernel and base tools, with GNU bases and only gpl softwares in /bin /usr/bin etc... xorg ...
With a system like that, maybe it will be easier to port softwares on mips ?

When are you going to get started?

I don't know, I've no tools do make it yet. If I have time, I think I'll try.

I know about vpro and xorg, but I don't know about MGRAS performance with xorg.
I try to install portage but, after creating account, folders and unpack mipspro-wrapper, I have:
Code:
bash-4.0$ source .bashrc
STDPATH="$PATH"
export PATH="$EPREFIX/tmp/usr/bin:$EPREFIX/tmp/bin:$PATH"
$./bootstrap-prefix.sh $EPREFIX tree
* Bootstrapping Gentoo prefixed portage installation using
* host:   mips-sgi-irix6.5
* prefix: /opt/gentoo
* ready to bootstrap tree
* Fetching prefix-overlay-20100323.tar.bz2

I'm trying to install OpenBSD 4.7 (beta) on octane, it boots with the framebuffer and the keyboard works, but I have a panic, it can't "mount root", then I don't understand the error

edit: woops, I think I use the bad image, I'll try again
I see, I used bsd.IP30, I'll retry tomorrow
Why not, they support hp-ux and solaris binaries... but I don't know if it will be a good feature because IRIX softwares are old now.

But it could be fun to use qemu and emulate a x86 to run a windows: maybe better than softwindows95
mea culpa, it'b a good feature. I don't know if 3d acceleration is available with Xorg, but Vpro could be supported with Openbsd 4.7 (I can't test, I have a MGRAS)
I'm retrying with the correct file now bsd.rd.IP30, the installation is in progress, I set a default configuration about the harddrive, wait and see.

edit:

It works, but I don't know how to configure the prom to boot (I use bootp for the moment) and I'm searching how to configure Xorg

edit2: It's resolved for the boot, I've set the OSLoader to "boot"

edit3: There's no driver for xorg, so I try http://www.linuxtogo.org/~florian/files ... 00.tar.bz2

edit4: the system is easy to install and it's fast to boot. pkg_add works fine, but for the moment no X (I fail when I try to compile the Impact driver) and /usr/ports doesn't exist :?

edit5: I'm installing ports maybe it could help me for impact driver. and bsd boots in video
In the video the first track was Soulfly-"Cangaceiro" and after it's Rammstein-"Asche. Zu Asche"

For the driver I'll try the last released if I can.
what's new in the current snapshot for IP30 (x11...?)
where can we read news for mips status?
My LG L225WS works too

the 2 screens are 22"
no chance.
If you check on the ftp in snapshots releases you can see it's not 4.9 yet

ftp://ftp.eu.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/sgi/
Yes I have a basic 13w3 adapter bought on internet, I had already this monitor so, I have just tried and it works.
After checking by google, my LGs are SOG:

I don't know if miod has started to make a driver in the actual snapshot.
When I stop to the maintenance I can't use the LAN so I can"t install systems on my octane.
If I boot on IRIX, the network works well, but in the Prom, I'm unable to ping py others computers. I try "resetenv" and reset the netaddr and srvaddr but no changes: it doesn't work!
I've made a virtual machine that runs ubuntu amd64 for a server install. and it doesn"t work. I retry with DINA now to check if it works
resolved i had a bad configuration file on my tftpd server
I've reinstalled maxx DR3 just for fun, I have no icons on desktop. Finally how to change the wallpaper ?
up, I m trying to setup a Install server on virtualbox with freeBSD 8.1. I read the wiki and I've modified the inetd.conf file.

My octane can't run fx or start the installation. Unable to execute bootp...: invalid argument. unable to load bootp... is not a valid file to boot
I tried DINA on virtualbox and it didn't work. And I don't know why, I had not network with vmware
Hi,
I don't know why and I searched but I didn't find a solution, some softwares don't work like pidgin, gimp...
I've just re-installed IRIX 6.5.30f and I don't understand:

Code: Select all

octane 1% cd /usr/nekoware/bin/
octane 2% ./gimp
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org
octane 3%
octane 3% ./pidgin

library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information

edit: I've reinstalled pango and fontconfig and it works
I have installed Cygwin on my PC to use my Octane without screen.
I check the fontserver is on and I've modified the xdm-config like the wiki but:

It's really ugly. Faster than the sgi GPU but ugly ugly ugly.

The fonts are not correct and the colors too bad.
I tried to use Xnest but I have:

Code: Select all

Xnest :1-query octane
Fatal server error:
Unable to open display "".

edit: it works better with X command instead of Xnest
there is a debian port

http://www.cyrius.com/debian/o2/
I have just re-install Irix in my Octane from a Debian server.
I've downloaded some nekowares on my server and I can't decompress them.
tar xvf doesnot work.
Doesn't work, sfwmanager said that a I don't have any packages.
If I put SERVER:/srv/tftp/neko where are my nekos.tardist, sfwmanager said there aren't files
all of nekoware, I can't install them if they're compressed with software manager. I'm using Irix 6.5.30.
My debian server, works perfectly: I can install Irix or OpenBSD, inst and software manager open all of directories that contain install files, but not my nekoware's directory because all file are compressed in tardist.
jimmer wrote: tardist's are regular uncompressed tar-archives. simply untar them on your debian server:

tar -xvf rara.tardist -C .

Code: Select all

tar: neko_zsh-4.3.9.tardist: not found in archive

vishnu wrote: The file program will tell you if they're really tar files or not. If file can't tell what they are they were probably corrupted somewhere in the download and all you should need to do is download them again.

My downloads are ok, to test, I have untar from Irix and it works, but not from Debian. My harddrive in my octane is about 8Gb, too small, that's why I stock nekowares in a server.
Resolved:

Code: Select all

for file in ls *.tardist; do tar -xvf $file; done
