windows nt for mips?

Hi,
I know we can find winNT 3.x or 4.O for mips cpus. Can I install it on a SGI octane? If yes, by LAN?

No. WindowsNT requires ARC firmware. Only a limited number of machines could run WindowsNT/mips and SGI machines were not in that list.
WindowsNT 4.0 Server and Workstation versions all had alpha, mips, powerpc and x86 versions on the same CD.
Programming WindowsNT on RISC systems was painful. Thanks for dredging up nightmares I've been suppressing since the 1990s..

ARC vs ARCS
Endianess

For the ease of Microsoft's Windows NT effort the ARC standard defines the byte order to be little endian only. SGI systems where ARC is called ARCS violate that by being big endian.

thanx, I'd like to try another system with a gui than IRIX

Linux/MIPS works. I have a Gentoo live CD which I can boot off an external CD-ROM connected to one of my O ctanes..
I still prefer IRIX and this site has a strong IRIX focus on SGI hardware.

why would you do that?

I was thinking of writing an IRIX device driver and Linux/mips on the same hardware confirmed that the PCI card was functional.
I don't give my business the attention that it needs as it is and ran out of time for mucking about with it.
I had also considered using it as a base line to test against...
I just finished porting libtorrent to MIPS Pro, more on that later.

In the NT 3.1 Service Pack 3, there is a HALSGI.DLL. In the July 92 NT 3.1 beta there is a file called "SGIREX.SYS", hex-viewing it reveals a suspiciously looking string LG1Base - it seems it is an NT driver for Newport graphics (REX3 was the rasterizer chip, LG1 is the codename of one of the Newport cards). Also in the leaked NT sources are source files for the SGI HAL with comments, that they are for use with the Indigo. There were some demos of Indigos running NT. Isn't it possible to change the the endianness of Indigos?

It's possible to change the endianness, yes, but to the best of my knowledge no PROM was ever publicly released supporting it, so it would be pretty hard to do...
