MaXX is back! - Page 2

OK Maxxi,

Fresh install of Mint 17.2 here.

I tried running the install script. It ran successfully after pointing the links to your new url (tho, it still says successful install even if it can't find the tarball...). I also added the paths to /etc/ld.so.conf and ran ldconfig:

Code: Select all

/opt/MaXX/lib/
/opt/MaXX/lib64/
/opt/Maxx/OpenMotif-2.3.1/lib
/opt/Maxx/OpenMotif-2.3.1/lib64
/opt/Maxx/OpenMotif-2.1.32/lib
/opt/Maxx/OpenMotif-2.1.32/lib64

At this point I am able to run the toolchest, nedit, gr_osview, gmemusage, hinv,fm :D Just seeing the beautiful italicized fonts in toolchest warms my heart.

Code: Select all

./hinv
4 1000 MHz GenuineIntel Processors PF 6
CPU:  Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz Processor Chip Model  42 Stepping  7
FPU:  yes
Secondary unified instruction/data cache size: 3.0 MBytes
Main memory size: 3836 Mbytes
Audio Processor: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller
Graphics board: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection
13 additional PCI devices
5 USB devices

However, all is not well. I probably have to add the new executable paths still. Also, I can't run winterm:

Code: Select all

./winterm
Warning: Cannot convert string "-sgi-screen-medium-r-normal-*-*-150-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
/opt/MaXX/bin/mxterm: symbol lookup error: /opt/MaXX/bin/mxterm: undefined symbol: getColorResource

or ideas:

Code: Select all

./ideas
./ideas: error while loading shared libraries: libXm.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Of course, when I try to log in with MaXX set as my session, I get nothing but a blue screen and red cursor and need to kill X from another terminal. (I suppose the vulcan death grip has not been implemented yet?? :D )
But.. I have set my cursors to red in cinnamon already. I feel my life has improved significantly with just red cursors :)

Any hints? If not I will keep at it.

Edit: added a screenshot with some working programs in Mint:
Thinkpad x220 Slack + DWM

Google: Don't Be Evil. Apple: Don't Be Greedy. Microsoft: Don't Be Stupid.
That's really cool. Mint is the way to go and it's encouraging to see all your enthusiasm :)

I've just uploaded a new set of installation scripts that reflects the new project's URL. Please report broken links. Also did the same for the WIKI pages at: http://dev.maxxdesktop.co/trac/maxxdesktop

either not part of your LD_LIBRARY_PATH (or ldconfig config) or simply missing

like I said, it's an ongoing process to bring back MaXX up to date with current linux distro.

nice, so you included what was in the libSgm directly?

Excited to see this project live again. I'll give it a test on my testing laptop (Latitude D610 w/ 1GB RAM, Fedora 22 installed). May need to give it a try building on Slackware or Solaris later if I'm happy with it.

...

Okay, I lied. Ran it on my main laptop (Dell Precision M4500, Fedora 21) with fairly good results:

not necessarily. Although it could be made available as a compiled library and under special license from SGI. Lemme check what they say...

that looks awesome! As per my agreement with SGI, MaXX can ONLY run on Linux intel . This is the main reason why I couldn't release the source for 5Dwm for example. But again, I am reopening the communication channel with them... will see :)

Understood. I sorta forgot about that for a minute. However, it does make running Renote X programs look correctly on a Linux box. Too bad that Fedora broke XDMCP as of Fedora 21, hence why I hope to get it working in Slackware

I ran 5Dwm as my main desktop for years on Slackware, but the releases after the project was rebranded to Maxx were problematic specific to Motif apps. This would have been with Slackware 13 through 13.37, I have not tried it with 14.0 or 14.1. As I recall the problem was that motif windows would come up black on black, which obviously made it a bit tough to get any serious work done... ;)

it's a known issue and was very easy to resolve. If I recall correctly, it was due to the XResource manager not fetching properly the resources for 5Dwm and a bunch of invisible 'special' characters in the 5DWm resource file.

Cheers,

Tested on CentOS 7 with triple monitors. Screen shot attached.

Side note, if SGI budges on the Linux on Intel a little, this would be pretty awesome on a Raspberry Pi....

looks pretty cool. and quite happy with the binary strategy I choose back them to compile MaXX.

Think they'd be open to dumping hardware documentation for their old MIPS platforms? *Really* want to get my hands on the "Godzilla Architecture Specification" and "HEART Specification" documents...

Other interesting hardware documentation would be specifications for HUB, BEDROCK, and PIC.

I tried to get freeBSD 10.1 fully functional on a reliable machine and I keep having issues... 20mins to boot due to a bug with SATA DVDs, clang replaces CC (sooo slow) and the list goes... Installing the Nvidia driver is hell... I really tried mate! Even the linux_base-c6 package's installation script is full of bugs.

Sounds like bugs with your particular setup. Maybe if I have some time soon you could give me access to the source repo and I'll see what I can come up with.

that sounds like an idea. BTW, I tried on three different systems.

 It has some issues with some newer systems, Macbooks and other Crapple hardware, and just about anything that is touched by Broadcom, AMD or a few others. Not their fault. The GPL causes code pollution. BSD stuff can be used by GNU/Linux but not the other way around, makes it difficult for the BSDs to keep ahead. I usually find Thinkpads are good for the BSDs, a few years old is best.

the only other option is to install gcc. that's one of the few disadvantages of the bsd family. unfortunately a major one: there're no serious compilers available at all

the linux_base-c6 package's installation script is full of bugs.

well i guess that's not a priority package. those who use bsd do so because they do not want linux.

as for the rest, either use a proper machine or try a vm.

On one of your BSD box? that would be cool!
