Ever try just plugging in a usb flash drive into a solaris box? it doesn't just work. You do have to sacrifice some small furry animals to get it to work.

When you tried, was it on Solaris x86 or Sparc? Solaris 10?
I've never had any problem using USB thumbdrives on Solaris 10 on Sparc architecture... It works remarkably well...
We used to have the Simpson's mugshots as visual logins for all of our users, this was a cool display...

No MLI? Just Kapton?

:-) Was just wondering if you were also graphically modeling MLI, that should be quite a sight...
sincil wrote: Ah, the cream of Manchester! :D
Darn! For years I thought the cream of Manchester was called Arsenal FC :-D
From your answer to #14, i.e. MXE works but not VPro, I'd say you need to install the VPro support piece of IRIX, that's what's missing... It's been discussed on nekochan quite a few times...
zizban wrote: Heck port Irix to x86.
What would be the point of that?
Timberoz wrote: For one it might see some new software come to the platform. Or better still support stay for some of the older products that left. Maya, Discreet apps just to name a few.

Or see ongoing development for existing ports.

You'd get all this by porting IRIX to x86?!?!?! How??? I know IRIX is pretty magical, but it will be able to turn old MIPS binary into shiny new x86 code?
MooglyGuy wrote: He probably meant to imply that Discreet, Adobe et al might consider maintaining an IRIX port if it were ported to a more 'popular' (please, no evangelists splitting hairs on that choice of terms) architecture.
But this would not involve maintaining existing code, this would mean writing new code, that's where I was getting at... That would be the same logic as expecting Solaris Sparc applications to work on Solaris x86...

funny how often a sample of one can confirm suspicions.

My sample is larger than one. I'm kind of a slow learner :?

Mine's real Japanese, "Yamato Nadeshiko" full force, I guess it's because we're older and she's from a smaller and traditional town... It's quite amazing, but sometimes puzzling and sometimes difficult to deal with (especially the self-deprecation). It's way more subtle than being submissive (she isn't, you're right, that would be absolutely boring), it's more a sense of duty and self-sacrifice... The self-sacrifice thing gets weird sometimes, because most of the time it is unnecessary, but that's the only answer she's got... It's a daily learning experience, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else :-)

As far as western chicks go, don't worry, the sense of entitlement lasts quite a bit longer than in their 30's, then it turns into alimony :-D Frankly, I think they take their sense of entitlement with them to their grave...
nekonoko wrote: Since posting the above I actually bought an official HD 5870 from Apple (mostly so I could use my mini DisplayPort equipped LED display without an adapter), but the performance is otherwise identical to a flashed card. I've found it to be much faster than the 4870 for gaming and general 3D usage in both Mac OS and Windows. The extra VRAM also helps tremendously in things like Second Life that really load up on textures.

OK, so that might be a worthwhile upgrade... I wish there were some "clean" nVidia solutions, I'm using CAD tools on Win7, and ATI has always had some issues with OGL CAD applications that nVidia never had... BTW, are you interested in parting with your flashed 5870?

nekonoko wrote: The biggest benefit to the AHCI hack is that it enables Windows to detect and utilize the two auxiliary SATA ports on the motherboard. This is necessary if adding something like a second SATA optical drive (such as blu-ray) - without AHCI enabled the drive won't be detected through Windows at all.

Got it, that's what I thought... Might still be useful though... The process doesn't seem horrible at all...

nekonoko wrote: Unfortunately the 5-score is to be expected; Microsoft has apparently made it so the Windows 7 Experience awards a maximum of 5 to any drive that is not an SSD.
I might just do that... Just need one of these $30 Icy Docks, and migrate the HD to SSD and be on my way...
AHCI install worked like a charm as expected... As you said, neko, the 2 extra SATA ports showed up in Device Manager...
Windows Experience is at 5.9 for the Velociraptor, I think it's higher than what I remember, but maybe it's wishful thinking...
After a few days with Intel's Storage Matrix Manager 8.9, I can say there is whole lot of data corruption going on :(
Maybe the MS AHCI is just good enough...
nekonoko wrote: I haven't run into any data corruption myself; I've been running with same 1TB drive and Intel driver since December 2009.
Nice... My Win7 on the 150GB Raptor took an ugly dump :(
nekonoko wrote: If you're dual booting, make certain you're not enabling NTFS write support on the Mac side as that's been known to cause data corruption.
I haven't touched it... Seems stable so far... One thing I noticed though is that once AHCI is enabled, the the bootcamp control panel refuses to come up since it can't find the boot drives... Only way I could make the control panel come up is by inserting a DVD in the DVD ROM... The control panel shows up, naturally not showing any of the drives... The "restart from Mac OS" doesn't work, but all I wanted to do was changing the function key behavior, so that's OK... A bit of a PITA though :(
BTW, if anybody is interested, my HD 4870 Mac Edition (i.e. real Mac GPU, not flashed) is on ebay:

DraftSight works well, and is free of charge

If anyone needs more, I've got a bunch too, sgi and Sun...
pm at will ;-)
jpanchal wrote: Subject says it - need a keyboard/mouse for my O2 - finally getting around to messing with it - semester is over! :)

Want the granite version (not the old slab, which I think wasn't PS/2 anyway and wouldn't work with the O2) - keyboard and mouse. Am in Chicago - so willing to pay for shipping for items that are in the US.

I've got a couple: light or dark grey, PS/2 keyboard & mouse... $25 plus S/H, let me know...
Hi guys, long time no talk...
It is time for me to unload a fair amount of hardware, hoping each piece finds a good home...
I have a few Octane/Octane 2 chassis, PSU, skins, memory, drives, ... if anyone is interested...
I have dozens of hard to find SCSI cables
I have a couple of Sun Blade 1000 workstations with Sun LCDs
I have an ski 230 chassis

I've got so much stuff to part with it's not even funny!

Let me know what you are looking for, I most likely have some...
evilquim wrote: Do you happen to have any Onyx2 boards laying around? I'm looking for
- processor boards [preferably two of the same type
- DG board
- drive sled && scsi drive for Onyx2
I have 3 sleds, yes (2 3rd party, with hook, and one sgi). DG board I think I have one, but might not be in good shape... I thought I had a bunch of 300MHz R12K boards, but I can't find them at the moment, lemme check further...

Which particular Sun LCDs do you have?

I have 2 different models of 18", I'll get back to you on that one... Both are in absolute pristine condition.
kshuff wrote: Hey Bill, really long time. What I can use is a power supply for an Octane, Cherokee if you have one and don't mind shipping it :) How things going?
Yes, long time no see! Things are going "interesting" to say the least! I do have a few PSU, don't mind shipping (if you don't mind the cost), let's pm, shall we?
