Cowboy Bebop is the goods. NGE is more hit-and-miss, but when it's good it's pretty damn good.

Anyway, I just finished powering through K-On! and revisiting Nichijou . Good fun all around.

"Bytecode" is just a generic term for the machine language of a virtual-machine architecture, so, yes.

I'm curious, does it always do the translation dynamically on loading, or does it cache it in the filesystem somewhere?

There's a surprising number of Nekochanners who are into synthesizers, actually. I have no idea why this should be the case, but there you are.

Anyway, the FB-01 is a fun little box :) Nowhere near as flexible as their professional-level FM keyboards, but plenty flexible enough to play around with, plus it's pretty well exactly the same voice architecture as the OPN chip in the Sega Genesis. Good stuff!

True enough, but it's still about the closest you're going to get in a MIDI-capable instrument, unless someone has hacked up an interface for Genesis & flashcart (which wouldn't surprise me.)

Heh :D Here she is. It's a 1969 Beetle with a rebuilt 1971 1.6L engine from the previous owner. Not the prettiest, but under the pockmarks the body's in good shape, and it runs very well. (For being almost fifty years old, it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned  Far better than any of the mid-'90s sedans I drove prior to this.) My dad assists with the maintenance as he cut his teeth on vintage VWs (I'm gradually getting a handle on doing it myself,) though the most involved we've had to get thus far was a carburetor rebuild when I first got it. We replaced the distributor with a Pertronix electronic model, so I don't have to adjust the points; beyond that, regular oil changes and tappet adjustments and the occasional tightening up of the brake drums have given me two years of regular usage without any major issues...by this point, each of my previous cars had started in on their final death-spiral, and they were all thirty years younger.

I've been surprised by how easy plain mechanical steering is to get used to. I don't miss power steering at all - and certainly not what happens when the power steering fails and you're left working up a hernia trying to horse the wheel off to one side or the other because the damn thing wasn't designed to fail gracefully.

I'd encourage you to stick with it. It starts slow, but the reveal of what's really going on and the gonzo lengths it goes to while remaining remarkably self-consistent (and the depth of background material it weaves in) are fascinating when you get towards the end and look back at everything that's built toward it.

Yup. It's funny because I only really noticed the connection when I watched Fire Walk With Me and noticed the similar fixation on power lines, and I'm still not 100% certain the other similarities are deliberate, but there's enough there to make me wonder.

I really should give FLCL a shot sometime. I have a limited tolerance for self-conscious extreme wackiness, but every now and again I run into something like Nichijou or Excel Saga that's totally worth it anyway...

Newest member of the family: a Hofner violin bass. (Not sure exactly which model, but it's one of the fully hollow-body ones, not the one with a sustain block inside.) Picked it up because I've been wanting to try one and a guy on Craigslist was offering a good deal since he's in a Beatles cover band and already has two others. It's a bit scuffed up, but overall in good shape, and it sounds sweet as hell :D Pure bass on the lower strings with a nice woody pluck on the upper ones, plays beautifully, and sounds good even without an amp hooked up :)

Win10 was what finally got me to make the switch. It became abundantly clear that once it was no longer possible to use XP as a daily driver, my options were going to be "clunky and suboptimal" versus "awful beyond all belief," so I just went ahead and made the jump. Of course, it helps for my use case that WINE seems to finally be reasonably stable on x64 and I don't do anything with modern gaming anyway.

I just plunked down for an SX Andromeda II from Rondo Music. It's basically the 4-string deluxe version (single-piece neck, high-mass bridge, better tuners) of their Jazz Bass clone I already own. I've found that to be a majorly sweet instrument, but after some serious consideration I find that the low B-string mostly just gets in my way and rarely gets used for anything other than a makeshift thumb-rest. I figure I'm going to sell off my little Ibanez and try this; if I don't find myself seriously missing the 5-string, as I expect I won't, I'll probably sell that as well, and be down to one really nice hollow-body short-scale bass and one really nice solid-body medium-scale one (and have a little more space in my living room!)

Interesting! I only found out about them when I got that 5-string Jazz Bass clone off of Craigslist, but I've been genuinely amazed by how nice an instrument it is considering they sell for $150-250 depending on the model. I went down to a pawn shop this afternoon just to satisfy my curiousity by trying a genuine Fender version, and it really wasn't any nicer than their clone. Looking forward to seeing what the deluxe model is like.
