Tried to drop in for a visit this afternoon and couldn't connect to Nekochan. I was thinking the worst for a few minutes...glad to see everything's back to normal (so to speak  ). Maybe it was on my end but I wasn't having probs with anything else. Either way.....

I still haven't been able to make this change. The info above works for opening new shells at specific locations but the OS is still treating both monitors as one. In the Dual Head Installation Guide it states: During an interactive session with the Windows Manager, you can use the DISPLAY environment variable to control the head on which newly started graphics programs run. When the DISPLAY variable is set to :0.0, programs you start run on head 0 (the primary head); when it is set to :0.1, programs you start run on head 1. Where is this variable to be changed? It sounds like mine is set to a single head.

Thanks, smj. It doesn't sound like much but it's a real b***h in illustrator (which I use quite a bit). Currently all dialog windows open dead center of the displays together as one so half the window is center left on the right monitor and center right on the left (see above image). For some reason with illustrator I can't move the window (I can in Photoshop though) and the drop downs in that window are buggy - are empty. All my system windows open half and half as well. The shut down window, dat dialog window.... All open in the center.

This isn't just an illustrator issue, all my windows open in the center. Every time I shut it down I have to move the Shut Down dialog window cause it's centered. Almost everything opens centered.

Just playing around with it, the Desktop Environment Setup window, System shut down, Restart, infosearch, Display Properties... all open centered. But things like Audio Control, Icon catalog, new shells... open fine.

This is an issue that's been coming into play in my computer room. I took my "his" side of our two-car garage and framed, dry walled, drop ceiling'ed and wired it into a computer room. Dropped in a cheap laminate floor and voila, a nerd cave. It has one hvac register in the ceiling that I can open and close. It's half-open as to not take too much of the AC/heat. In the evenings I'll go out and it'll be low 70's - we keep our thermostat set to 78*F in the summer but, being downstairs, the room gets cooler. I'll fire up my Octane and It'll send the temp to upper 70's in no time at all. My two NEC lcd's put out a ton of heat as well. I guess in a another month or so I won't mind.

I finally got around to taking some pics of my Octane and was going to post them to the gallery but I'm being prompted to enter my user name and password (I'm already logged into the forum). Does the gallery require a separate account? My login info isn't working. Also, it's says "You must enter the letters appearing in the picture."...I'm not seeing a picture. I left it on the screen for a while to see if it would pop up but nothing.

I'd just move them and forget about the problem but they won't move. Also, the drop-down dialogs are blank - no copy is being written to them. It's tough when you're trying to navigate to a specific folder.

I picked this Octane 2 up off ebay a couple years ago. The seller was asking $800 and I "offered" $400 thinking he wouldn't go for it - he did. The seller claimed to have worked for Enron although not with the computer. He said a friend worked in the lab where it was used for molecular modeling. It shipped with a spaceball which I never used but supposedly was used in the Enron lab. I can't confirm anything he said but the hardware did have Enron id tags and appears to be legit. Originally it came with a dual 300mhz configuration. I swapped it out for the dual 600's a month ago - it made a big difference in terms of speed. You can see in some of the pics that UPS did their usual shipping handling with these. The monitors took a beating during shipping and I literally poured them out of their boxes. They could of been packed a bit better but UPS beat the s**t out of the boxes, I'm guessing cause they were heavy. I filed a claim and they sent a stooge out to look and take pics. They then denied the claim. I tried to put them back together as best I could. I still have a box of small pieces I'm saving for a cold, snowy day this winter. Thanks for looking!

It only came with one drive and it wasn't the original from Enron. It was reformatted but not 0'ed out so I was able to go through it. It was from Hertz car rental in Las Vegas. Nothing good on it. I was thinking, the original disk might of been confiscated or someone knew that it was best destroyed.

I did try driving 2 1280x1024 monitors, but like your issue, smoke just sat in the middle.. PAH I thought, and went back to a single one.

I gave up very easily.

There's a way around this, I'm sure. SGI surely had quite a few paid users with duals. I have to explore the good info hamei offered up. I was out of tech for about a decade and missed a lot so my skillz aren't where they need to be but my old grey matter has a quick uptake.

The prob is the drop downs aren't being filled, I get the drop down box but they're empty. This happens on the shut down system box and most other boxes/windows. In illustrator I can't move it either, It snaps back.

I get pretty much the same behavior on all my multi-channel SGI systems, though the drop down boxes *are* being filled/aren't empty. The main Illustrator workspace/window and toolboxes open where ever I left them last and can be moved and placed at will; but most of the Illustrator dialog boxes open spanning the displays and snap back if moved. One system has dual-VPro heads (so two DCDs). In that case the Illustrator dialog boxes span the pair of displays assigned to the primary head/DCD. DCD-equipped Vpros aren't the only ones that manifest the issue, Illustrator dialog boxes also open spanning both monitors and snap back if moved on an InfiniteReality3 system.

I noticed the SGI port of Adobe FrameMaker provides a sample Xdefaults file ( /usr/adobe/FrameMaker/fminit/samplehome/Xdefaults ). Couldn't find where a sample Xdefaults file was provided with Illustrator, though there are some very minimal geometry settings inside /usr/adobe/Illustrator_5.5/app-defaults/Illustrator :

Code: Select all

!*Tools.geometry:          +0+50
*menuShell.geometry:       +200+0

As a follow up to robespierre's mention regarding the quality of Adobe's Quorum Latitude porting job, I noticed the following (commented out) entry in the app-default file:

Code: Select all

! This still has some UI problems on SGI
!*sgiMode:  True
!*yseSchemes:  True

Thank you, my friend!!! The window locations are controlled by the "*geometry:" line under "General Illustrator resources" in the "illustrator" file in the "app-defaults" folder. I set the values to +375+0 instead of the default +0+0 and the windows opens with it's left border 10 pixel or so off the left edge of the right screen.

Problem solved! Thank you to everyone that chimed in on this one!

One caveat that I'm seeing is that Illustrator is clipping those 375 pixels off the left part of the left screen. If I set my working window to the size of the left screen and try to draw a rectangle the left 375 pixels are blank. A work-around is to just use the right screen for the work window and the left screen for the tool windows.

Setting the value to the negative doesn't work.

Even CS2 is rather peculiar to use. This OriginalMac-semitranslated-to-Irix version needs some work. I guess we're lucky to have anything.

I had high hopes for Inkscape at one time ... alas :(

I guess the good'ol days are gone now that it's all cloud based. Adobe's wet dream was to be the creative world's crack dealer - get everyone hooked on their wares then drop disk-based distribution and get everyone to pay monthly/yearly. A lot of my customers have moved up and I make them back-save their files to CS3, the version I have on my Mac Pro.

I think I still have the original drive from Enron somewhere. I'll look for it tomorrow...I believe "inject" worked with it.

I just picked up an Origin to add to the collection. I'd like to use the Octane as a terminal...I'm looking for a terminal app. I'm using a serial connection.

It's been ages since I did anything server, this goes back to my digital equipment, Cal. U days in the late 80's so a bit of time has passed.

I though there was a terminal app as part of Irix but it's not installed on my octane.

I read the man page on cu earlier. I don't have it installed and read that it's on the Foundation 1 disk. :)

Thanks for the suggestions Hamei, Jan-jaap and recondas! I speak broken Irix so I usually take what's suggested and research the s**t out of it till I figure it out. I got my work cut out for me but, hey, it's a hobby not a job. At first I'd like to just get the Origin up and running is the simplest form then work upwards from there. I'm pretty stoked, it's a 2200 in excellent condition. I had to swap out my 15amp receptacle with a 20amp yesterday. It fires and shows there's no faults. It looks pretty damn cool in the computer room too!

I got uucp installed and followed these parameters "Using Another Workstation as the System Console" in http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?coll=hdwr&db=bks&srch=&fname=/SGI_Admin/ChallS_OG/sgi_html/ch03.html .

When I type cu Direct at the prompt I get "connected" then it hangs, does nothing. any suggestions?

Make sure it's going out the correct port in the config file. If it's the wrong port (or if there isn't anything coming over the serial) it will appear to hang. Cu (and the similar BSD "tip") aren't very good at the whole "tell you what's going on" thing.

If you do much of the headless box thing than a network console server/ terminal server becomes very nice. Plug your machines' TTYS0/OPA0/console whatever in, plug a network feed in, then you connect to the box over the network (via telnet, ssh, whatever it supports) and via that connect to the machine. No cable swapping needed.

I know what I did that might of made this go south and I'll check when I get home. What if everything on my Octane's set right? I assume this then goes to the Origin as being the problem? Does the connection work on a basic level in that regardless of the origin's os I should get something? The reason I ask is that when I turn it on the fans go into high mode. In my experience high speed fan mode is the default when there's either no os or an os that's not loading.

Nothing. Just can't catch a break. Other than the power switch/key my son just broke on it.

My son broke the key switch on my Origin 2200. It's a siemens board mount 3 position switch. I have a feeling I'm wizzing in the wind on this one but I'm going to need to find a replacement somehow. I can do a part swap actually, the plastic bezel that snaps onto the board "base" has two little ears that snap and hold the assy together. I can replace the key assy into a new bezel. And, there a red cup underneath that has a small tab that sticks up into a notch on the back side of the key.

Oh, well...this sounds like a 1 in a million to find but I thought I'd ask. I haven't owned anything that wasn't broke by one of my boys since the first one was born so it really doesn't come as a surprise.

That would be great if u did. I used super glue for a repair but it usually doesn't last.

I got this sorted last night. The processor node wasn't installed correctly. I pulled it and reseated the memory and cpu daughter card, reinstalled the node and got a nice, clean boot with a serial connection. All's well in New Originville. Thank you to all that replied!
