Can't agree more, I wouldn't buy such a machine to run an operating system that runs on an ordinary PC (trying to get AS600 running so I can install VMS and Tru64 as well (VMS goes to Jensen).

Or before installing windows, back up your boot sector to a floppy, boot from it after, and add entry for windoze to write back to HDD.
Well, as far as I recall, I got to the moment where code was truly meant to be compiled under GNU cpp, it was an assembler code that ought to be preprocessed but native cpp couldn't cope with code not being C/C++. Never found a workaround.

It's 01, and I don't use software to control it, it is what it is: a downmix console. Using Linux to record.

Yeap, no problem. Anyway, I've installed Opera, and it seems to confirm some of my thoughts: -the culprit is not Firefox on Ubuntu, but it is more like some kind of bug from the Flash build for AMD64. It does not works with Opera at all.

Flash 10 requires curl installed, Opera will only work with Flash 9

I wouldn't call it scam, these guys used to sell refurbished gear for their then-market value. After a few pokes on eBay, they turned to a different scheme - not selling high but "dictating" prices. I'm pretty sure that thing will return listed in a few days...

It turns out that just next floor there was a nice PowerPC server (and InfoWindow term) that belonged to our department (but it was long forgotten).
I got it, trying to take ownership on it, and have some questions:

How do you open it?
What graphics can it take, it apparently has a graphic card, but will not boot when it's inserted
What was the last AIX that supported it?
Bear in mind, that I'm actually a newbie to AIX/PPC/MCA

OK, opened it, pulled the graphics out of it, will see if it finishes booting, for now no serial console and stops at 517

for now, just doing reboot cycles, but will wait - there's an update however: it nicely spit "PROBLEM DETECTED" with BNC connection

Update 2:OK. I suspect now it had some NFS shares that it's unable to mount now, unfortunately I can't get a proper serial console (help appreciated), and the graphics it has installed doesn't show anything (looks like it does at least start booting, because there's a serious disk activity after SCSI being checked).

As others suspected, the machine doesn't let me log in from console, only hardware warnings are displayed (BNC token ring not connected), otherwise the machine boots, but is inaccessible and just halts with 517. Looks like I'll need to consult higher power (it has support contract) :)

Ladies and gentlemen!

Since I've been trying to revive all of my gear recently, I gave this one another try: plugged in power, turned the "ignition" key into "OK" position, and pressed starter...erm, power on switch... and while waiting for boot sequence to _ever_ finish, got busy with my work related routines. After quite some time I actually noticed something weird: the LED panel was blank! Worrying, I power-cycled it, this time observing - went thru 517, stopped on 558 for like 3 minutes... and then went through higher numbers, finally bleeping c33 and going blank...

Obviously you can imagine my happiness upon discovering the meaning of that code. It was even greater when, after plugging InfoWindow II, it showed much wanted AIX 4 greeting screen.

Root had no password. Last login was on...

wait for it...

Trust me, it was MUCH worse when I got it. Somebody has removed CDROM drive and used a flippin' speed tape to hold the bezel together,
Add broken top cover which was glued with ugly gel. Took me over two hours to remove the tape alone. After that, a lot of Pronto (a.k.a. Pledge) action and polishing bruised plastic.

I have to confess that it is not one of my especially favourite Macs (there are worse ones, but there are many better ones).

Actually, my favorite is 605 (a.k.a. 475), and I'll get it on Monday or early in October. I got this one as a "replacement", because the shop owner forgot to prepare 475 for me as he promised.

Why did I take it? Because it's still a very cute and compact Mac. Plus, it has CDROM and uses IDE drive.

I'm really not looking for anything purpose-driven. I just have limited (read: absolutely no) experience in a VMS environment and figured it would be neat to grab a box to learn on every now and then, hence the small and cheap requirement. :) Nothing I have to devote considerable floorspace or a new circuit breaker to.

How about XP1000? It's quite powerfull, small footprint workstation.

That is Yikes! :( , and it's probably the most botched machine I ever had to restore.

Starting from the fact it requires Apple-flashed DVD drive, through inability to accept SCSI controllers of any kind, to finally me being unable to even start installation.
I found Tiger media on CD and, while the machine even booted, I was always left with a blank screen with Finder not starting. After several reboots that even fails, because kernel panics (without obviously no flipping mean to see what's wrong, because startup was so dumbed-down by Apple).

Update: isolated the problem to a faulty DIMM. Now I'm running on single 256 MB PC133 stick, got installer working, but somehow Disk Utility freezes on formatting the drive.
Trying "Zero out the data" and it's kinda working for now.

Update 2: zero-ing out worked, now installing Tiger. Unfortunately the machine freezes way too often: I suspect CPU overheating as the heatsink is kludged onto CPU with plastic strips.

"so it is determined": the logic board is fine, but the processor overheats due to loose heatsink. The freeze "reliably" occurs after about 2 minutes (+/- 15 seconds) of heavy activity, but when the machine is idle or with little activity, it can run very long without any issues.
There's good news though: I may have CPU upgrade and I have already put 768 MB RAM and new PRAM battery.
