Someday I want to run a Windows VM with black desktop background, hidden taskbar, and a VNC connection to an Octane or something. When scammers call, I will open teamviewer so they are controlling the VM and then quickly alt tab to the VNC client. Watch as scammer tries to figure out IRIX.

That must have been a million dollars+ of Origin 200.

JEEZ :o

Well the article says 20% IRIX, so it would be 200 Origin 200s but still, lots of Origins.

IG-01 printing now. No "PT" moniker here. There may be minor revisions, but this means I consider the device good enough to sell in its current state and will focus on preparing for sale from now on. If you would like to contribute to the development of the device, a survey regarding how the community would like me to proceed with the project will be coming soon.

3D printer has had some issues, upgraded firmware, trying again. Hoping for a complete IG-01 soon.

Hey there!

I just peeled the last piece of IG-01 off the 3D printer, and the unit has been successfully assembled. I took some nicer pictures of the unit and its parts, and they are seen here.

In total, production of all the parts for a mini Indigo takes roughly 24 hours of print time with perhaps 15 minutes of sporadic human involvement. If I time prints correctly, I can keep the printer running 24/7 without modifications to my daily schedule. You can see an ODROID-XU4 installed in the device, but a Pi B+/2/3 is also supported on the other side. The part of the design which I am most proud of is that the design contains zero screws, catches, snaps, or other complicated holding devices. It attaches entirely by pegs and holes built into the parts, and through tight tolerances can be turned upside-down, shaken, bumped, transported without it coming apart. Of course, when you want to take it apart, it takes under 5 seconds, involves no tools, and can be put back together in a similar amount of time. I plan to sell the cases and have buyers purchase and attach their own boards, as having me buy and resell boards adds needless shipping and tax costs for the buyer that would likely amount to a significant price raise. Selling units with pre-installed boards would also require spending a lot more upfront to manufacture a device, and could possibly increase order times on completed mini Indigos if I have to order boards from Korea.

There are some things which could be done to improve quality, and I will definitely test them out, but ultimately the slow, layer on layer additive process of 3D printing means you are bound to end up with ridges of some sort. All you can really do is try to make them smaller.

$2600 a year? Have you looked into Amazon EC2? Surely they would have some sort of a plan capable of hosting this site, there's not too many members... My dad pays around $100 a year in 3 year increments to host his site, though it may have less traffic than this one.

Again coming from my dad, he describes setting it up as "trivial" and says that running a website the size of Nekochan (encompassing blog, forums, wiki, etc) would probably be around the $100 a year I estimated. The main complexity in Amazon setup comes from the sheer number of add-ons, options, and features you can add. If you want, you could make a free account which gives you quite a limited cloud server but it would be enough to get a feel for the service.

Getting my machines home was not exactly easy.

I got my SGIs all together from a guy who seemed to be selling off his collection. I arranged the deal online, and agreed to get the items in my signature as well as two big parts boxes and some extras in exchange for two old laptops and an iPad 1. He was in a city near mine that my dad often visited for business trips (I'm too young to drive, otherwise I would have driven down there myself). A while later, my dad had to go to that city, and he agreed to pick up the machines. Now, when he goes there, he carpools with his business partner, who owns a relatively small car. He claims to have been very surprised at how large the machines were, and says they almost didn't fit. So after his business trip, my family was planning to go to our cottage, so he just went straight there and we met him. The first thing he said in regard to the machines was "The cubes were heavy". I didn't have a sync on green monitor there, so I put the Octanes, Indigo2, and Indys in a closet and decided to just use the O2 until I got home. So I set it up, everything is good. The issue is, we were trying to sell the cottage at the time. I ended up having to hide the whole O2 setup 3 times for showings. Since we were moving, we had to bring all the stuff from the cottage home, so I had to pack all the SGIs into the car as small as possible to make room for items ranging from lamps to outboard motors. Also, it was raining... We drive home, I worry about plastic skins, everything is fine, except my house is on top of a hill, and the driveway isn't. So I have to carry a lot of 50+ pound machines up 20+ stairs. I get them inside and unload them in the front entranceway, but the issue is that again, we're both moving and coming home from the cottage, so my parents are trying to unload cats, clothes, food and more into a tiny, awkwardly shaped room that's completely full of UNIX workstations. So I have to frantically carry them all down into the overfilled, messy lab and find places for them. A lot of them just ended up sitting on the floor.

Worth it.

Finally got the printer to do it's job. Still has some imperfections that didn't exist on the last printer, but the actual quality and fit is much better than the last (less rough, as computron requested).

A few imperfections, but generally better.

Fits an ODROID-XU4 (reccomended)

Or a Raspberry Pi 3 (not reccomended, you will need to use bluetooth and WiFi as the USB and Ethernet ports are blocked by the case)

I don't know if I agree with them, and SiliconClassics is certainly stuck between a rock and a hard place here, but I see the source of the anger. While I doubt it, someone could buy that Indy and light the drive on fire. People don't like that very much.

One question: I know you probably wouldn't have wanted to do this, but would it have been legal in theory for you to approach that particular buyer knowing that he would "take care of the relic" (assumed to mean leak the code) as opposed to selling it publicly, or is there some law against choosing to sell to a particular person with the intention that they will break copyright law?

Just curious, not suggesting you should have done that.

SiliconClassics wrote: Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that the buyer would leak the code, just that he would properly preserve it and prevent it from being lost. And yes, the law does generally impose accomplice / conspiracy liability on someone who picks another person to do the dirty work, so I couldn't rightfully strike a deal with someone to buy the Indy and "fence" the code without exposing myself to potential legal consequences. But that's all hypothetical, and at this point neither I nor anyone else can know exactly what's going to happen with the contents of this Indy in the coming months.

Cool, good to know.

If you feel I should release an addendum covering things I missed, that would be considered. What in particular do you think should be included? I try to keep my videos short(-ish), but if I missed something important I would cover it. Mind, 1996 products (O2, Origins, Onyx2) are to be covered next episode.

I know the InfiniteReality was released, but I tend not to cover individual hardware components unless they are really important later on (I mention the R8000 and IMPACT because the R8000 had floating point errors in 1998 and IMPACT is repurposed for the Octane and resulted in an Indigo2 color change. WebForce was later (1996, from what I can tell).

One time they posted a horrible timeline from Wikipedia which forgot what the Onyx was and claimed that the Crimson succeeded the Indigo and was apparently the same thing as an Onyx and Onyx 2. Once I get the parts from Ian. The Indys have broken graphics cards (we think) and the Indigo2 has a hard drive but as far as I can tell the drive doesn't work. Same for the Fuel. It seems as if the previous owner of my SGIs (excluding the Fuel) mainly used the O2 and one of the Octanes, and left the other systems laying around long enough to develop problems without him knowing. No matter, they should work soon.

You must remember, I post these videos to Nekochan, but the majority of my viewers are just some random guy on YouTube who probably doesn't know much about SGIs or graphics tech. That's not to say nobody who watches my channel cares, it's just not most of them. The generalist approach, as you put it, is what most people new to SGIs want to see.
