Could someone please re-up the download link.
It doesn't seem to work anymore.

I thought, if I already own a SGI, I should try to learn 3D modeling.
So I got Softimage 4.0, Maya 6.5 and Blender 2.48 up and running...any suggestions how to start or find good tutorials?
I've already gotten slightly accustomed to Blender, Maya is also logical in some parts and Softimage is...tiresome IMO.
That said, up to now I've just messed around with some objects (I'm also not a very good drawer, but I'll manage) but I noticed that in Maya and Blender there are way more shortcuts than in Softimage, where everything is just clicking buttons...or am I doing something wrong?

I'm thankful for any suggestions how to learn the basics of modeling and some help with the programs in general.

In my 9114-275, thre are two HDs installed, one IBM (Hitachi) with 36 GB and a Seagate Cheetah with 72 GB. All the important system stuff and the rootvg is on hdisk0 (the Hitachi), the bigger Seagate contains a vg where not so important but larger data is stored.

Now some days ago, the seagate started to make short, clicking noises which lasted about one second. Then, I was greeted with mail from the system about a DISK_ERR4 on hdisk1
I suspect, something got broken somehow? The data loss isn't very critical, just some already watched Anime (at the time I put it up I didn't yet have an external HD and I needed to free space on the iMac :D )

Whenever I try now to transfer the files over ftp, after 20 minutes or so I get an I/O error.
At least I could save Cowboy Bebop ^^

This irks me somehow, since I never had any problems with the Cheetah in my Fuel, and up to now I thought that Seagate made quite reliable HDs.

tch...bad luck

Fortunately I just got my hands on a p285 for 35 bucks :D

No---it was Pick up only on eBay and in Austria. I don't think there's much interest in used hardware here.
Companies usually can afford to buy a new system and the p285 is already outdated (POWER 6 is already on the market)

The broad public here isn't exactly aware of POWER boxes (in the eBay description stood: does not run with Windows :D ) and they aren't the first choice of hobbyists either.

Also there was no AIX preinstalled, I wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't already acquired a set of 5.3 disks for my p275

Maybe I also was just lucky ^^

The machine isn't here yet, so I can't say anything about the boot procedure but I've got the Specs:

1,9 Ghz POWER 5+
GXT6500 graphics
4GB RAM
1 73 GB HD

Quite the impressive setup, isn't it? :D (But then again, this thing can hold up to 32 Gb of mem, so maybe I'll upgrade it any time soon)

The startup time's really long on my 275, wouldn't wonder if it's the same way on the 285
The official IBM description states that the 285 should be much less noisy than the 275, that's a big plus, though I like the loud humming of my machines and the drill-like screech of the Cheetah in my Fuel :D

@ritchan: Is your name a reference to Ritsu/Ricchan from K-ON? :)

Haven't watched Evangelion yet, but it's on my watchlist.
I wouldn't go as far to say I hate K-On but it's quite overboard sometimes...

Could be that I'm complete and utterly stupid, but I can't find any link under your avatar.

Intellistation 275:

1GHz Power4
4GB DDR2
36GB HD + 72 GB HD (broken)
GXT4500P

Intellistation 285: got it really cheap and the description on ebay was a bit of understatement :)

1,9 GHz Power 5+
8GB DDR2 (The description said only 4)
72GB HD (mentioned in description) + 3x36GB HD (not mentioned :D DD)
GXT6500P

The 285 is really quiet in comparison to the 275 and faster at booting.
I found it awesome that the guy I bought it from also packed three more HDs in the workstation.

Quite interesting: The 72 and one of the 36 disks are quiet....with only those turned on the 285 isn't louder than an average desktop.
But...switch in the other two 36 disks (same IBM OEM) and they go LOUD...they're even louder than the Seagate Cheetah in my SGI Fuel, although the noise is not as high pitched.

Any idea why those 36 GB disks have that different noise levels?

Impressive! Works fine on the fuel but...how do you stop this program? It completely locks up my machine when executed. Maybe I'm just too stupid but I tried Alt-F4, Ctrl-c, esc....nothing happens.

Finally got to install 6.5.29 on the Octane, but this system doesn't seem to like me.
When I first boot the OS I get

Code: Select all

The system is coming up.

And after that it hangs on the serial console. I'm able to get in over telnet but halt for instance doesn't work...

I have a 9111-285 and a 9114-275 and can swap trays between the two computers without any problems.
Unfortunately I have no spare ones at the moment...

Don't know if this fits in here, but since it has SPARC inside I think it does.

Just got a Fujitsu Primepower 250 (quite difficult to find where I live) :D

Specs:

1*1,1 GHz SPARC64 V CPU
2*72 GB HDD
2 GB memory
some sorta gfx

This one is beautiful but despite its small form factor even a little bit noisier than my F280R

As much as I'd love to test Sol 11 I still haven't resolved the issues with the F480R.
The Fujitsu PP250 doesn't like it either...when booting from CD:

Code: Select all

krtld:could neither locate nor resolve symbols for /platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/unix

I'm not an expert in Solaris but shouldn't this run on the PP250? Because 8, 9 and 10 do.
Maybe just a bug?

While moving, my dad accidentally dropped my O2 (the one I got from yetanother**ixuser some time ago with the power-on issues).
I kind of freaked out when I saw the mess, shattered plastic everywhere and thought that, since O2s are generally quite vulnerable to impacts, the machine now was gone for good.
Put everything together again as good as possible, the machine looks like this now:
Image

Not expecting anything I powered the machine on - red light. "Well maybe it's just the normal power-on issues, let's try again some more times", I thought (by the third time it always seems to work).
And indeed, when I plugged it in the third time the amber led comes on, the noisy drive spins up, the 1600SW turns on and "Welcome to O2". :D
Did some more tests and the O2 just works like before the drop. Either I've got an unusually stable machine or I just was lucky this time :)

Wow, that would be great! Could you please tell me what shipping to Austria would cost?

Yep, the O2 tool it fairly well, the case seems to have absorbed almost all of the damage. There's a dent near the broken loudspeaker cover in the metal but nothing else! :)

I've been planning to get a nice looking rack for some time now, one of those beautiful Altix racks would quite be to my liking. Only problem: my computer room is on the 1st floor, there's no way to transport a whole rack up the stairs. Is it possible to disassemble the thing in a way that one to two people can carry the parts upstairs?

My C8000 is one of my favourite workstations because it's incredibly quiet. Unfortunately I don't even know where I should start to find software for HP-UX. There must be something out there to run on that system, right? It feels a little wrong to just use it as an obsolete Firefox station.

Today I finally applied for a new hobbyist license for my rx4640 but I seem to be missing something in the boot procedure. I set my vga console as primary in the EFI and proceed to boot OpenVMS 8.4 from the install DVD, only to get stuck at the "Please enter time and date" prompt. It seems as if my USB keyboard isn't recognized anymore, caps lock light doesn't work either.
I've tried two different keyboards, both are exhibiting the same symptoms. Did I forget to set a variable somewhere?

I did some digging online and found out that apparently OpenVMS on I64 isn't able to accept USB input during boot at all. This means that a serial console seems to be the only input method until the X server has been initialized.
