what he said
No problem - the old server died so I had to order a replacement. Took an extra day to get everything in from Newegg/Amazon due to the 3-day weekend.

By a coincidence which may seem strange I just ordered a new laptop for my nephew from newegg, I love those guys!
Pete, may I be so bold as to enquire what hardware we're running under now? Cause I've got a fairly kick-ass never-been-used 2U dual Xeon HP server I'd have been perfectly happy to donate to the cause...

Thanks, but I want to keep the power bill and noise level as low as possible

Not a shoebox but egg cardboard boxes for better sound isolation!

Close The last motherboard was a D525 (had D510 & 230 boards even earlier on, there are some old threads on this). This is a J1900.

For some reason I always assumed that Nekochan was hosted on SGI hardware. Though that would be an expensive way of running a forum so in hindsight wouldn't make much sense
It was running on SGI hardware until 2009 or so.

Why did you switch from SGI ? For security reasons or electrical bill ? May I ask what upload rate do your ISP provide and at what price ? I wanted to do something similar at home (using my Octane 2) but getting a decent upload rate where I live is prohibitively expensive so I gave up... I would have gladly hosted a nekoware mirror if the whole thing went through.

Did these motherboards fail or was it something else?
I demand a refund of my wasted $0!
No SGIs here.

Both. I ran two very loud O350s towards the end, and dealing with the noise and the increasingly difficult to keep up to date PHP/Apache/MySQL was getting out of hand. Plus they weren't very speedy as web servers go.
The circuit is business class SDSL, but very expensive - $200 a month.

Yes, the power regulation failed on the D525. The previous boards were replaced because I wanted to try newer ones.

And then there's the power consumption. I think an O350 module consumes around 250W, so running my two-module O350 at home where I have to pay €0,23 per kWh would cost about €1000 annually. That just crazy.

I s'pose you know, you have the world's most expensive electricity ? Even post-Enron California is only about a third that price. There must be a reason ?
the bourgeousie is ultimately a repressive institution, and I hate it ...

I looked it up and it breaks down roughly like this:
43% is the cost for the electricity
17% transportation cost
40% taxes (VAT and environmental tax)
