New Nekochan Wiki! - Page 3

How about placing your article as a "How To" - it could be linked to or from Workstations: O2.

BTW - anyone who might be considering an article for the nekochan wiki but hasn't because they aren't certain of how to format their article so that it displays in the proper format, here's a decent formating cheatsheet:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Cheatsheet
and a slightly more comprehensive article on how to edit:

i'll start working on it + see how it goes

update:

just created my first article O2 Diagnostics: The Jumpstart Procedure under How To

seems ok to me (hopefully i didn't brake anything)
I just added a wiki page on the Origin2k/Onyx2 Rack midplane diagnostic LEDs:
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/ ... 2_Midplane
Feel free to make or suggest any improvements.

Pete,

i have finished my work on the scripts for import the nekoware package informations into our wiki. Befor pressing the button i would like ask for permission to do :) .

Maybe it make sence to create a sql dump befor we start so that we can revert all the changes if needed. On my local machine it takes 8h for the import. It depends on the number of obsolete tardists and the incredibble time the "shofiles" programm needed for extracting.

The current state looks like http://www.nekoware.net/index.php/Category:Nekoware .

Hmmm..... i see that i cant bypass the captcha check which comes up when a article contains a URL. If its possible to remove the check for some time?. Maybe you would try to set
Code:
$wgEmailConfirmToEdit = true;
$wgShowIPinHeader = false;
$wgDisableAnonTalk = true;

in the LocalSettings.php. These settings prevents the creating of pages without having a account with a confirmed E-Mail address.

regards
Joerg

what other (archived +useful enough) topics should make it to the wiki..?

would it be helpful to come with a wish list and take it from there? i could dedicate some time if i knew which ones are really worthy...

what about Diego's
- The MOD/M.O.D. (Magneto Optical Drive) IRIX FAQ ?
- O2 As Serial Console: HOWTO ?

and what about external links/articles like:
- Chris's [The Keeper], Fibre Channel FAQ for SGI user's ?
- Chris Pirazzi's Lurker's Guide to Video ?

(i guess the real question is) should the neko:wiki be one central/complete reference point (including copied-pasted articles and link(s) to the original source(s)) or should it focus on just good enough nekochan topics with external links..?
Whishlist:
"The $MACHINENAME Hardware Aggregator" threads - Where $MASCHINENAME is something like FUEL,O2,.... and all the others :)
- Combined with Hardware (GFX,Video,Router,CPUs) related pages which are linked together in categories.
- Origin/Onyx troubleshooting
- Non SGI gigE nics
- Adding GFX to origin2000
- Some like a FAQ.

And all the info have to be in the article and not like a link list which points to the forum or other resources. To be fair place add a link list to the bottom.

regards
Joerg

Anything and everything. :)

I started a hardware timeline template at Wikipedia. I didn't complete it because I can't find (with my limited knowledge of where to search for things SGI related) further info. But I'd love to see that completed and copied to our wiki.

hmm yup the o2+fuel aggregators are already there (+ growing from time to time), with so many octane owners here, it'd be really easy to come up with one more... david (recondas) is also working on some big iron entries (pure quality dave, pics and clear descriptions)

i think it should be more eclectic, otherwise it'll end up being a copy of nekochan fora in a different format..?

(i don't know really that's why i'm asking)

:D Thanks

I just added a couple more:
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/ ... outer_LEDs
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/ ... Board_LEDs

I'll look into it later this week - I have a severe cold at the moment and don't have the energy to do anything technical.

Fu, a good topic for the wiki is the 1600sw, considering how many threads come up concerning them. Things like the different multilink adaptors, how the prototype differs from the production model, and mentioning the "Radius Artica" variants would also be welcome. Pics would also probably help as well as a link to the Neko 1600sw gallery would be good too.

Also we might want to add mention of the clear O2s on the O2 page, and a pic of each of the O2 old, new, O2+, and clear skins.

get well soon

good idea scot, iirc there's a lot of (technical) info here scattered around in various topics...

sounds good too, hmm besides neko i can't receall anyone else owing a clear o2, pics for the old/new o2, o2+ would be easier to aquire (i should take some of myo2 when i get back 2 berlin again)
Get well soon Neko!

I'm not sure if Neko's clear O2 was the one for sale on the forum awhile back. I.e. This one - viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14580 The pics on Neko's hinv thread viewtopic.php?f=14&t=14786 don't show the spot where the crack would be.

I almost bought this one - viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14626 , but it was missing the CD bezel and I decided to spend the money elsewhere.

I also seemed to notice 2 clear O2s for sale / trade a long time ago when I was first getting into SGIs. There should be a bunch of them, I'm guessing somewhere between 16 and 40. Though sadly some have not been well cared for, which is a real shame.

Sorry, you can somewhat tell what my #1 wanted piece of SGI kit is, i.e. a set of mint clear O2 skins.
Thanks - I'm almost back together again. It's been a rough week.

i'm looking @ the wiki and sorting out some sources to update/add entries

i bumped into contradictory statements regarding o2 RAM:

There are 8 DIMM slots on the motherboard and memory on all O2s is expandable to 1 GB using proprietary 239-pin SDRAM DIMMs.

The O2 uses custom memory modules - they can be found from time to time on ebay, but are rare and expensive. They are special 278pin DIMMs...

NekoWiki wrote:

Type: 139pin SDRAM DIMMs (proprietary)

i don't have my o2 in london so i cannot check, could someone else confirm..?
I think 139 and 278 are both right, though 278 is more correct. I counted the pins on one of my modules and got 139 per side, so 278. My 128MB modules are double sided, but some Kingston 64MB modules (I happen to have two) are just half a 128MB module and 139. At the very least 239 is wrong.

Possibly a picture for the wiki might be helpful, I'll see if I can get some shots of my modules. I have 128MB (SGI and Kingston), 64MB (Kingston), and 32MB (SGI).

Also, how does one add pictures to the wiki? I can't believe our O2 page doesn't have a picture of an O2! I'll volunteer pics of my cube style O2 for the old style pic. I believe there are some floating around in the forum in my restoration thread.

We also might want to mention the SGI badges in the Indigo, Indy, and Indigo2 wiki pages. I'm not sure there was a badged O2, was the WebForce O2 marked differently?

thanks for clarifying scott

yup i was thinking of updating the Memory section by adding the colo(u)r-code info...

see dave's links for the wiki:editing cheat seats on the previous page

hex, strange...
i'll have to take some funky shots of mine next time i get to athens...

update :

i added some more info on the o2 page (mostly CPU + Memory Tables)
just added some basic VPro info: http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/VPro + cross-linked http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/SGI_VPro

(detailed VPro info seems hard to find)
Great work! I really like the changes you made to the O2 page with the processor and RAM lists. Two minor issues, one the tables style doesn't match the others in the wiki (personally I think yours is nicer and the others should be changed), and the SS/DS (Single-Sided / Double Sided?) should be clarified.

Couple of fun facts to add (if you have time before me) on the Indy and Indigo RAM info from the SGI specs. ftp://ftp.linux-mips.org/pub/linux/mips/doc/indy/mc.pdf since I came across some incomplete and incorrect info. when looking for RAM for my machines as shown in viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17275

Note, the Linux-MIPS site has a lot of specs. which might contain useful information for the wiki.

I like the VPro page and think that's the way to go. Ideally the Impact/ MARDIGRAS boards should also have a page and the sections in the Octane / Indigo2 pages (half the Indigo2 page is on IDing the video options) should be contracted. Also, do you happen to have the PV, Digital, Compression, and Analogue/Digital video option info? I think there is a lot of confusion on this. Personally, I happened to run into this http://cgi.ebay.com/SGI-Octane-Octane2- ... dZViewItem on eBay and was wondering exactly what it was.
