Very nice machine! Quite like mine. I've always thought it odd that gfxinfo doesn't post the graphics board number for the V series. Presumably your DCD works? Mine doesn't work for crap, may I ask what monitors you're using?

Yes the DCD works with a single monitor. I'm using a 1600SW+Multilink Adapter. Not easy to make it work but it worked in the end. See viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16728430&start=15 for the gory details involving butchering a poor DVI-D cable.

I want to put 8 gigs in it. But it' too costly for now. Anyway FF3 is working much better than I expected. Quite fast and no crash yet.

I think 8GB is nice, but 2GB is enough for my needs (mipspro mostly). My main workstation has 2GB, and while I have the 6 other sticks in my drawer, I never had a need for them, I keep thinking I might need them someday, but realistically, I don't think so. There's only one application I'm compiling that requires a little over 1.5GB at compil time, most of the rest can be done around the 1GB bar. I think 2GB is plenty, but I don't want to discourage you from adding more of course, I just say, the gain is usually marginal unless you really have an application that needs it (in which case, name it, I'm curious to know which).

I thought about parallelizing the compilation further of course, and I did that, but I've noticed the gain is not worth the effort, it's cpu bound anyway.

I've never seen over about 2 gigs in use on mine, either, but Unixmuseum used to run some CFD on his, and that used all 8. In fact, one reason he kept the Octane in service was that none of the peecees in his office could manage that much memory.

Thanks ! Luckily, it has been pretty painless to set up until now. One of my goals with it is to buy some used bigger FC hdds from ebay and create a big and fast file server with the thing. I still need to buy a cheap PCI gigabit ethernet card to put in the PCI cage (already have the cage but it is not plugged in yet).

The only drawback of the whole system is the noise of the D9 Stone... Crazy !!! I didn't fire it up in 3 years or so and totally forgot the madness. When I pushed the on button this morning after set up, it felt like an airplane taking off in my basement. Can't even hear the Octane next to it ! :D

I don't understand why it needs so much cooling... I'm gonna try to replace the fans with modern ones and slow them down with resistors... Pics coming in the next few days... 8-)

The D9 stone is the cube shaped metal box, right? Those go back to the 1st generations of 10K disks etc, and they ran *hot*. Put a dozen together in a shoebox and you need a lot of airflow.

Modern disks run much cooler, so you can reduce cooling as well. I have one of these which was modded with an ATX PSU -- probably because the original PSU died. Then the ATX PSU died as well :(

I wouldn't mind pin-plucking another DVI cable and would love to try a 2@ monitor set-up. It also happens that I have a second 1600SW to go with my O2 but I only have one MLA so it will have to wait for some more SGI play-money availability. I already got past the intended budget in the last month to get everything up and running as I wanted.

Yes it's the cube shaped industrial metal looking thing. What hdd would you advise to use ? I see a lot of cheap used 300gb FC hdd on the bay or even 600gb sometimes...

Latest upgrade : dual VPRO carrier installed with V12+V10 and also QL2310 optical FC-AL card in PCI cage. The dual head thing worked right away without any further tinkering !
V12 drives a 1600SW and V10 a 24'' CRT.

No more special cable since I'm now using a Dr Bott SGI Saver thing instead of the SGI MLA. It works better, sync faster and doesn't need any special cable.

ah.. possible why I had issues, I was using the SGi MLA with a modified cable, which did work, but kept loosing settings once a week.

why dual GFX ? specific application need ?
I wish I could enter into the vegetable garden of William Gibson , on the right of a director, to decide how a film is ultimately released for public viewing, but I am not a nor Cyberpunk writer neither a dude in Hollywood , and my * flawless English * still looks like an old rusty trailer which needs a fix-up, so my personal wonderland begins with a pill ... tumbling down the rabbit hole , where the sky above the router port is the color of television, tuned to a dead channel and some gears still need a debugger there.
