The collected works of ZoontF

Hi all,

So I downloaded all of the nekoware and installed ... really great stuff.

I was curious if anyone had any problems with xscreensaver-getimage?

When I run it, it dies.

Like so:
Code:
X error in xscreensaver-getimage:
X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request:  72 (X_PutImage)
Serial number of failed request:  28
Current serial number in output stream:  36

This matters because it makes the webcollage screen saver die.

I have a plain-jane install of irix 6.5.20m on my Octane. I have some freeware installed, all the nekoware, I have fixed all my paths for both distributions - Nekoware is first in the path environment variable...

I figure this must work for other folks, since it has not been mentioned in the forums.

Not all of the Xscreensaver hacks are operational for me -- I'd be interested on what excatly you are doing that generates the Bad Match error. Maybe I can peek at the source code and come up with a work-around.

BTW I get following results when I run webcollage directly

Code:
/usr/nekoware/lib/xscreensaver/webcollage
Can't locate bytes.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/share/lib/perl5/irix-n32/5.00405 /usr/share/lib/perl5 /usr/share/lib/perl5/site_perl/irix-n32 /usr/share/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/share/lib/perl5/sgi_perl .) at /usr/nekoware/lib/xscreensaver/webcollage line 57.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/nekoware/lib/xscreensaver/webcollage line 57.

I assume it's because I haven't set it up correctly.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "what I am doing" to get the BadMatch error, but when I get a chance I'll try to describe the environment. Given the previous reply, I did try setting my Xsgi settings differently - then I messed with some other stuff, decided to reboot (I had been using chkconfigs as well), and on reboot, it won't get to the login screen. The point is, since I am already busy with other stuff, fixing my SGI isn't top priority (even though I know how) this moment. I'll post back here when I get the time (in a day or two).

As for the perl, I decided that since Freeware and Nekoware include newer perls I would try uninstalling the IRIX perl. After uninstall, I made sure paths were set, and the missing "bytes.pm" error dissappeared (presumably becuase Perl could now find it in the nekoware/lib/perl directory).
Is this for real?

I don't believe it. On the other hand, it would like spiffy sitting next to an I2.

Yeah, that struck me as strange... to have another company's logo on it...
Actually, Neko looks exactly like the avatar picture. Neko is an AI come to life (a la Ghost In The Shell) whose programmer watched a crap-load of Anime. The AI needed some sweet hardware to run on, so it took over a vacant O2 it found hooked up to the net, and here we are today...

Nobody can explain how the O2 that Neko took over sprouted real honest-to-god cat ears and tail, however. It works better if you just accept that AIs can do anything.

:wink:
Gee, if anyone, including Neko, needs a GMail account (or another one in Neko's case), just ask. I have 6 I have no need for.
Sweeet....

Whaddya mean you don't know what to say? You are "a tad big sexually oriented" (though you never say if that orientation has any particular direction...), according to your tag line. Shouldn't a "sexually oriented" fellow have some sort of amusing comment for the photos?

I'm considering ordering one of these mouse pads, though I don't think I can bring it to work. My GF would probably get a kick out of it...
hurray! mouse knockers for all!

Sorry to offend. Just joking around.

No, really, I *do* have a serious girl friend, and I *don't* need fake styrofoam bosoms to make me happy. Really.

But that mouse-pad would look good on the coffee table...

I used to think I would have to grow-up in order to find a woman that cared for me, enjoyed my company, and respected me. I've realized now that often women have to lower their standards in order for this coupling thing to work out :wink:

Then the guys end up owing it to the gals to not be so immature "all" the time. We cut it down to about 30% of the time and call it good. In theory. We try. It isn't easy.

Anyway, to respond to the original comment... I disagree. I don't think it sucks to be mail. Er, male. I've thought a lot about it actually (before now). I think women get the bum-wrap.

Here is a sample list:

starting from 0:
men -> usually immature = -0
men -> usually obsessed with sex = -0
men -> prostate checks after 40 = -50
men -> prostate cancer = -500
men -> simpler/[better-understood anatomy because health professionals were traditionally male] = +100
men -> whether we (guys) agree with it or not, male dominated society = +100
men -> being straight and irrationally fearing homosexuality= -100
men -> being gay and being irrationally feared = -200
men -> have sexual arrousal being annoyingly obvious in high-school = -50 (unless you're still in high school, then it seems like -5000)
men -> having to be monogamous when its a biologically unreasonable societal requirement = -50
---
Total: -37

women -> being smart = +50
women -> being mature = +50
women -> not having to deal with that high school problem above = +50
women -> secretly being in control of the world = +1000
women -> having men fight over you = +50

.. gee, that sounds pretty good. But wait...

women -> being generally disrespected by men = -500
women -> menopause = -1000
women -> having a bunch of dumb guys be responsible for advancing medical knowledge of women until recently = -1000
women -> pain of child birth as part of biological destiny = -1,000,000,000,000,000,000,001
---
Total: in the hole a lot more than men

Yeah, sure, both sexes are negative, but it just seems like it would be harder to be female. But then this is a male perspective. If I had half a brain, I'd run it by my GF and see if it adds up. But she's asleep.

Now hermaphrodites... ... ... I really don't know how they add up in this comprehensive list I've come up with. I suspect that since most (all?) cannot go through child birth, they rank above women and below men in the "it sucks to be ... scale". Just with all of the unwarranted hatred/disgust/misunderstanding here in western society; well that's gotta be a pretty big minus right there. Then there are the unfair social pressures. And, the crappy physiobiological issues with the body and all.

But, maybe since this is a male perspective, I'm really wrong, and women wouldn't trade a thing to be a guy.

Or maybe I'm just MASSIVELY GENERALIZING and it really is a personal perspective thing. Otherwise, why would some guys want to be women??

But I hardly feel that I was taking it "too" seriously. Given that it was an early morning ramble...

Still, I feel Lisp has proven that I have a wonderful way of misinterpreting other people's statements. Very nice. :o

Seems to me the static/shared thing was discussed before in another thread. There was a vote, too, right? I don't think the outcome of the vote made it clear cut what we should do.

Shared means we each have to install a buncha libs in order to run one app we want, getting into the typical dependency hell that drives me nuts on Linux.

Static means we have bloat on machines that we would probably prefer to avoid bloat on. I know that I like to keep my machine running as lean as possible.

Since this community is more of a DIY type community than a DIFM (do it for me) type community, maybe we should have compilation with shared libs be the default, and if the package maintainer/contributor is feeling jazzed up, he/she can contribute a static build as well. Then we can clearly store the two versions in different locations and point new-users/DIFM types to the static builds for ease-of-use, but those of us who can handle installing all the dependencies can have the most cutting edge releases.

But, then, who is really going to police this all anyway? I mean, if I build the latest version of FireFox with all features fully functional and its just perfect, but I only build it static, am I really going to get shat on or ignored just because I don't play by all the rules? We need all the help we can get... :?:

Anyway, just my thoughts... thanks Foetz for your contribution! I appreciate it.

I've gotten a number of questions about using VPro graphics and Octane compression together, since my original post claiming I was doing just that.

After all, SGI says you can't do it.

Well, after getting the software installed, my only issue with using the Octane compression and my V6 graphics together was that, when I would record video to a file, the video would have this annoying green-noise flicker every so many frames. Not so bad you can't see the video, but certainly annoying.

I was lazy for a long time, and partially just unmotivated to switch out my V6 for my ESI card to try a proper Octane Compression setup. My post 'Vpro to SE' gives some good reasons supporting my hesitancy to fool with my setup. (I thought my ESI was an SE...).

Anyway, the point was: does the green-noise flicker happen with the ESI card. If it does not, then that would lend creedance to the theory that, while mostly compatible, there was a small issue with using VPro graphics and Octane Compression together. If the green flicker did occur with my ESI board, however, then my only noticeable complaint in using the the compression with V6 would be found to not be tied to the V6 board, since it would not be in the system.

And, the verdict is....

(drum roll please)

I still get the green flicker with my ESI board.

*SO* from what I can tell, my Octane Compression board is f*cked up, but otherwise, Vpro graphics and Octane Compression work fine together.

I admit that I have done no in depth study here - with my V6 graphics board in, I just tried capturing compressed video using dmrecord, playing it back via dmplay, capturing using mediarecorder, viewing live video through videoin, and maybe a few other small things. But, all of that worked fine when using V6 graphics - excluding the green flicker.

So, this is somewhat mixed, but mostly good news, I suppose. I'm annoyed that my rare and hard to find board is messed up - its not like I can just go grab a replacement. But, at least for all the other folks out there wondering about this setup, it finally looks like confirmation that it works right.

I hope someone finds this helpful.

Too bad there is no system diagnostic utility for the impact compression board. That would be helpful right about now.

Further tests last night showed a couple of things worth noting mostly only for me, with my green flicker issue.

1) The green noise shows up when recording live video, even when there is no video input (i.e. just black, or no-signal). So, if I don't plug a camera in to the card, and just record, I get a video that is mostly just black, with a few flashes of green.

2) It seems I can record without the green noise if I use media recorder and capture uncompressed video (i.e. do not use any video compression, such as MJPEG).

3) If I open a video that normally plays back with the green flashes in 'moviemaker', and hit play, it does not seem to show the green noise. Its strange.

Other notes:

I always thought that mediarecorder did not use the hardware compression in Octane compression, but the man page says it does, if you have the right settings in your video recording 'task'. I'm not totally convinced, but if this is true, and a setting of MJPEG compression for an SGI movie automatically uses the hardware codec, then that would be useful, since using dmrecord to record all video is sort of annoying.

You can not output video directly from screen, according to the release notes of the compression software, unless you have impact video or digital video cards. Reading the release notes for the compression software is quite useful.

If anyone ever needs a copy of the Octane Compression software CD, I'll be happy to provide, just ask.

Yes, RulesOverride is required to install.

I dont know if you saw in the FastFans thread, but if you only have a V8 and Compress board, you mmight get fastfans to turn off if you move the compress board to the other XIO slot.

I third the vote for the hypercube in future wallpaper renders. The ones you did look great - but I can't deny my love of the cube.

Neko - thanks for everything you do. It is easy to take a site for granted... but then it goes down and you are thinking to yourself 'crap, I should have archived so many of those useful posts' because the first place our mind goes is not to network failure but to hardware failure, lightning strike, tornado, meteor... "When Nekochan went down, I thought I felt the earth rumbling from the explosion... but it was just my stomach getting ill..."

This is the coolest alternative computing enthusiast site out there. Or maybe all others are the alternative and this is the sole remaining mainstream computing site? ;^)

I've added a couple non-SGI related items for my own personal enjoyment... but if anyone else has interest in using them, grab 'em! You can link to them against my server, but I won't make any promises about uptime, etc.
Image - NeXTStation Mono Turbo w/ Duckfoot Monitor
Image - G4 Cube... updated version of one that was floating around here before...
Image - MacPro (3,1)

Also - remember: don't ask Neko to add any non-SGI hardware to the official list of 'smilies' ... it has been discussed. These images are not affiliated with Nekochan.net, and are not hosted there.

Which of the IBM tower servers had a black chassis, but included a red bottom front exhaust that was curved, in the same way that the Indigo2 feet are a curved exhaust?

I've been poking through eBay and Google Image Search, but can't remember if it was a particular RS6000 server, or a pSeries of some type? Something else? I'm fairly certain that the few times I've seen them they were running AIX.

Thanks for the pointers.
