Why should they? It's a 20+ year old system they no longer support...

I imagine I'd get the same response if I called and asked for a license key for the 68K or PPC versions for Mac.

They're simply not going to tell you how to bypass the licensing requirements, certainly not from an employee of the company in an official way.

I had a look at a couple of listings, but I'm in a crappy location for anything listed with "collection only" :/

Having said that, I don't have any more space under my desk for anything else at the moment!

Light bars are easy to fix with a couple of LED's and a couple of resistors, HDD and cages shouldn't be too much of an issue either...

PSU's might be repairable, otherwise there's a Cherokee on ebay at the moment at £40.

From what I've seen of the current Amiga scene, accelerators these days are pretty much all FPGA softcore emulation, then ramping up the clock rates to get the performance and keep compatibility with the 68k series, ppc seems to have died off a bit.

Not sure if FPGA's could cope with a MIPS 10K+ emulation given the difference in architecture?

Not sure about modern MIPS processor compatibility with the older versions used in SGI boxen though.

That's not really an accelerator though, and is something most people can do already on their "other" machine(s)?

You could build up a customised FreeBSD/Linux etc image for that if you wanted to make life easier I guess.

Might be the drive - old amiga drives are a bit prone to duff heads as they don't have a dust flap - might be worth giving the drive a clean first?

Darktable seems to do it, and there are solaris and freebsd packages - not looked at the source though, so it might have a few things which Irix will bork at.
