But... is there anything similar available open source?
Probably not. I wonder how easy it would be to make such thing with sdl, a some kind of a wrapper. Hmmm. Im thinkin about it. Because that glterminal is so cool.

Oh yeah, i was just thinking about the possibility to have something similar working on ye olde irix or ... windows or linux ( shhh, i know, its a heresy ). I think i will have to investigate situation further - having a pet project - to try to code similar opengl/sdl hack. Don't hold your breath, though...

That is actually a fun concept - I'm surprised other terminals haven't implemented something similar by now. The primary issue with GLTerminal is that the original author hasn't updated it in five years - it needs various hacks to even get it working properly in 10.5 (there's a third party 10.5 package but it's a dirty hack, not a proper code fix). The original release had a cool application icon too

yeah, i think it won competition for the most inappropriate icon for a program

GLterminal does rock...too bad it doesn't work real well on intel.
I have it on intel and works just fine.
if you see white screen go to preferences and change render engine.
How's the performance you're getting on Intel? I downloaded the app but it's a PPC binary. I'm tempted to write a clone from scratch and make it run on FreeBSD, IRIX and OS X.

The performance is according to emulation - not lightspeed, but not a snail.
I would love to see that on linux/bsd
so if you can, go for it

Not having a Mac, I would love to see a clone that will run on x86 Linux and IRIX!
Oh, and that is a great icon!

well on intel.
For OS X 10.7 and upper (without Rosetta) one may use
Cathode
.
Hmm...Interesting... I hope that the concept of building UIs around the concepts shown in movies doesn't go any farther. Especially not to the GNOME/KDE developers.
