The collected works of UrbanHero

Time to join the topic...

I'm Rene, born in '71, living in the northern (green) part of Rotterdam, Holland.
ATM i'm working at the IT department of an accountancy firm, but come februari '06 i'll shift homebase to the KLM IT department.
Much more interesting hardware/software (switching from a bunch of Novell/Windows servers to about 300 pSeries IBM's running AIX), and a better pay as well!
Before this i've done maintenance work on our fighter planes (F-16's) for 3 years at an AFB in Volkel.

Currently i'm planning to sell my apartment, as me and my girlfriend (a KLM stewardess) have decided to buy a house together.

I've always been a techy-kinda guy, having done MTS (Middle Technical School), LETS (military school where i learned how to maintain F-16's), and several courses for Novell and Windows.

I have a knack for wanting stuff that's 'not mainstream', so i own about 6 SGI's and a SparcStation 5.

My hobbies include my motorcycle, reading, listening to some good music, kicking the pedals of my mountainbike, fitness,
tinkering with computers (duh!), motorsports, snowboarding (if money permits), and having good fun with my friends...

Future dreams (be it attainable or not): lots of travelling around the world (i need to see SO much more of this world before i get to old), and building our own car for track-days with my brother.

UrbanHero.

Apparently my stomach can't take the abuse in it's former glory anymore (or has forgotten all the lessons learned in military service ;) ), but when i decide to hoist down a few it'll probably be:

- A good Tullamore Dew or Famous Grouse on ice (nice smooth taste, doesn't have that sharp 'bite' afterwards);
- a Belgium'ish beer, like Wiekse Witte, Leffe triple, Verboden Vrucht (forbidden fruit);
A wine will also do nicely thankyou ;)

Oh yeah, still got a bottle of 'Santa Teresa' rum waiting to be assasinated; i took that one along from Isla Marguerita because of it's....hint of chocolate taste (don't know what to call it else).

Just a wild speculation here, but could it still be a monitor problem?
Magnetic fields nearby (the other monitor?) that disturb the screen?

Noooooo!!!!
Stupid stupid stupid decision!

Guess i'll be pampering my SGI's even more from now on...

Just hoping to arouse some interest from the programming wizards:

http://www.dangerdeep.net/

Looks pretty cool, may be usable on our precious-but-matured polygonpushers as ships don't require super-high framerates :)
It's done in Scons though, i vaguely remember Jarndyce muttering about that while compiling Blender ;)

*aWOOhaa! aWOOhaa! Dive! Dive!* :D

Well, this sure generated some interest :D

Performance is almost passable for me (Fuel/500/V10).

Ouch! I was hoping lumbering boats wouldn't tax the system so much; apparently there's a lot of heavy stuff going on behind the scene...my Octane's gonna have a tough time with this :?

Charles to the rescue! :P
Although i still suck at working with Blender (so much to do, so little time), it gives me a fuzzy feeling knowing that Irix-Blender's not at the end of the road yet :)

I'd love to, but my gear's all packed up for the moment :)
Maybe in a few months...

Thanks for keeping Blender alive on Irix, Jarndyce! :)

Sometimes using FDDI is just the fun of using some 'used-to-be-very-expensive' equipment :)

Mine still needs to be set up (starting on my hobbyroom will be my newyears' resolution ;) ).
The concentrator i use will draw about 100W, it has two hot-swap cards installed (one FDDI, one ethernet), and will connect 4 systems via FDDI master ports, bridge to its ethernet card, which uses FOIRL (ethernet protocol over fiber) to connect to my switch...said ethernet card is '92 vintage and therefore only 10Mbit though

Basically they'll chat pretty fast among themselves, connecting to the rest of their UTP-equipped fellas is kinda slow.

Smart? No. Sensible? No. Fun 'n Cool? Hell yeah! I mean....just look at all those blinking lights! :D

I admit that i still need to get things set up, but i use Cabletron concentrators, and those should work fine.
The MMAC-3/5/8 models are basically a chassis with a backplane consisting of multiple busses, a power supply, and fan tray.
You insert cards according to communication needs; these cards have their own CPU,firmware, and console port, and basically run independently; they communicate with each other through the busses.
All parts are hot-swappable.

My setup consists of a FDMMIM-04 card (4 master FDDI, 2 pri/sec FDDI, bridges to the IRM-2), and an IRM-2 (ethernet module, 1 FOIRL port, 1 AUI port).
I could also add a FDCMIM-08 (8 FDDI master ports) to expand FDDI connectivity.
Workstations connect with their FDDI card to the concentrator, which converts FDDI to Ethernet protocol via the IRM-2 card, which connects to the rest of my (Ethernet based) network.

Impressive stuff! I've read through a lot of pages yesterday evening, and man, this is the greatest discovery....well....almost EVER! :)
I was almost ready to dump my somewhat-yellowed IBM 43P-140, but hell, i guess i'll give it a shot. Or clean up my original Indigo CDROM drive...or my brothers C64...or.... :)
Seems that 'easy does it' works best, apparently this way the plastic won't suffer...but indeed, be very careful with the logo's etc.

They tried blue plastic...this got marked, but in that experiment they used bleach, so maybe it'll work with peroxide. Hmmm, got a green-blue cover laying around somewhere...
Guess it won't hurt to check for ingredient availability over here :P

Did i mention you're a lucky person? :)
