What SUN hardware do we have? - Page 4

Greetings all!

I thought this may be a nice place for my first post. I have not had a lot of experience with SUN in the past but I definitely want them to become a big part of my life. I just inherited some workstations from a friend's Dad! I will post a picture of them when I get home from work, along with some SGI stuff to prove my worth here! I will be posting quite a bit as I document my adventures to bring them back to working order, pictures too of course! I am a long time hardware tinkerer, I hope to begin to play with software now.

Ultra 30 with windows PC card!
Sun Branded Trinitron (the one with the blue base that I always wanted!)

Along with a bunch of SCSI goodness: A couple of Caddy CD drives, DDS3 Drive, 2 DLT drives, a couple of flexpack double deckers, 2 911 enclosures (disks too) and one 811 enclosure (disks too).

I hope I am in the right place! I am not afraid to admit I am a SUN noob but I do have some experience with UNIX and IRIX. I want to dive into this stuff deep as I transition careers from Network Support at a small business to a UNIX admin.

Is there a thread for general SGI gear discussion as well?

Thanks!

Jess

Do you mean sunPCi card?

Well, good news: we have installed and configured successfully our sunPCi 1 card (400MHz) in our ultra5. And our huge sun collection was extended by a sun sparcstation 10! <3

Her, not but there will not be a next time ;)

BTW, I have also done a similar thing with a complete 4 rack PDP11/44 and 11/23.

Somehow I start to understand that girls have a bad influence on me, but a second though I think they have that on all guys

My current lets me have what I want, as long as it's in the office or the loft.. my ex though.. I'm not sure I got everything back (missing 3 Indy's, a PI and an Indigo - I think).

Women do though have a tendency to throw my beloved clothes out stating they cannot find them.. it's like I'm unfashionable!

Mentioned it in another thread, but I'm in the process of getting a Blade 2000 up and running (first Sun I've owned since I gave away my Ultra I and II before moving out west.) 2x1GHz, 8GB RAM, 2x146GB FC-AL hard disks, an XVR-1000, and a SunPCi-II, currently awaiting the arrival of A. a 13W3-to-VGA adapter (gorram video card won't do console output to the HDMI or VGA outputs!) and B. drive sleds. Already had it successfully boot from the Solaris install disk. Looking forward to playing around with this :)

Wow, tadpole stuff! That's pretty great!

The Suns I have are real old:
One 3/60 without color
Two 3/80s, with two mg2 and one cg6
Three Sparcstation 1s
A Sparcstation ELC with a spare 40 MHz cpu board
:PI: :O2: :Indigo2IMP: :Indigo2IMP:
I used to lurk here back in the day but family and changing jobs back in 2008 meant a curtailment of the time I had free for all my interests. Things are more settled now (son is 7 years old already!) and I can spend a bit more time in the computer cave, with:
1. SS IPC with TGX+, SunOS 4.1.4 - first UNIX box I bought, runs fine on its 2nd PS; HD is 20+ years old...
2. 3xSS20, with 2xSX & a ZX; 2 on Sol8, 1 on NextStep 3.3; one of these has been a main machine of mine since 2000 (was my router & PPP link back in the dial-up days, using IPF to keep the unwashed hordes at bay);
3. SS5 with TCX, running NextStep 3.3 (mighty quick compared to my NeXT black HW);
4. Ultra 60 with Sol 10 (currently down).
Looking to pick up a Blade 2500 soon...
Long live the 4D/'s - my PowerSeries BitB (Beasts in the Basement) !

Heck, I'll update my list. Of actual real "Sun" hardware, I have a Sun Ultra-3, which is actually a Tadpole Viper with a Sun label on the top, and a SPARCstation IPX somewhere in storage that's probably blown its Dallas battery by now. And ... that's it. The Ultra-3 runs Solaris 10 and the SPARCstation IPX runs mumble.

But I have other SPARC systems, mostly Solbournes. The Solbourne S3000 was revived and is happy. During the process of upgrading its CPU, I took stock of the other Solbournes around here. There's an S4000 and two S4100s, another S3000 but the screen is busted , and a Series 5 that I need to see if it even works, since I think it's the only VMEbus system I own of any architecture. They all run some version of OS/MP but the hard disks are shot in all of the S4x00 machines. Fortunately, SCSI2SD devices seem to work just fine in the IDT systems, at least.

Finally, picked up an RDI Ultrabook IIi, full complement of hard disks. It runs Solaris 10 too.

So, I'll add to my entry by posting this from the SS20 (with dual 75MHz SuperSPARC-II & SX "fb", running Sol 8 with OpenWindows as the GUI). Patience was required in order to get to here using FF 2.0.0.20....
I have a SS2 & a SS10 around for which I reprogram the NVRAM when I fire them up. And an Ultra 2 (2x300MHz, Creator3D FFB2+) that awaits a new PS...

ClassicHasClass: I have a long-dead SPARCbook 1 in a box. I'm pretty sure I don't want to try reviving it....
My earlier post was done from a PowerMac 1.25GHz MDD running OS X Tiger, using TFF 38 <bows to ClassicHasClass>. The newest computer in the house that I use when not in the subterranean computer cave is the last version of the PowerBook (1.67GHZ iwth hi-res screen). Everything in the cave is much older, back to PI's and PowerSeries towers (including a Twin Tower 120GTX)....

Ha! I do most of my posting from a Quad G5 and an iMac G4, as the sig says.

Be nice to see that SPARCbook live again. If you bump the systems to Solaris 10, you can run the Oracle contributed build of Firefox 38.6. It doesn't have a JIT like TenFourFox, so JavaScript performance sucks, but it works pretty well otherwise.

I'd have to try finding the SPARCbook-specific SunOS 4.1.3 (?, might be 4.1.1)
install - that'd be a miracle in itself (heck, ATM, I can't think where my
4.1.4 CD is located should the disk on my SS IPC tragically go south...).

Yes, I'd like to continue with 'Adventures in SunOS/Solaris-land' by running
Sol 10 on a Blade 2500 (and see how FF 38 is on there!). I used Sun-3/80's in
school, then later Suns professionally from 1991-2004, so a successor to the
Ultra workstation-line for inclusion in the computer cave is certainly in order.

Thank you very much for continuing to hone your computing skills through the
years, though you've changed fields pretty radically. And I'd say you've succeeded
pretty spectacularly, given just the content you offer up on Floodgap! TFF,
Mosaic, Gopher (oh, yeah, I remember when this was the cat's meow), Classilla
(runs on my 7200/120). And the HW : PDP/11 (my intro to UNIX - Research Ver.
6), KIM-1 (used one in high school), Newton, Solbourne, oh, my! Just looking
makes me want to pull out the first computer I actually bought - an Ohio
Scientific Challenger 4P...

I've ended up in the medical field as well - I monitor EMG and evoked potentials
intraoperatively during spine surgeries at the Univ. of Virginia Med. Center...

Cheers,
Michael Doyle

P.S. Hopefully this is a successful submission via NS 4.5 on the SGI I^2 R10k
that I've been reviving this week...

The flashlight like this?

Unfortunatelly the 80 MHz Weitek Power µp chip isn't included in the box but the exchanged, original CY7C601A 40MHz (SPARCstation 2).
In my opinion the box is a way to expensive for shipping to Europe but is only for to show the image of the flashlight. ;D
