BEAUTIFUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Nice! That's a seriously maxed out (and very nice looking) Octane!
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen : R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium : R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30
Very nice !!! My Octane 2 with dual head is also named Cobalt. You copycat you !! 8-)

Nice Octane and a beautiful photo as well. Tripod & long exposure?
To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. ( IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report )
Serious power!

That's a brute! Superb!

Would love to know what such a configuration would have cost from SGI back in the day when this was a new system. In fact I dread to think!

Two V12s each with a DCD! Do you actually run it with four monitors? Permanent fastfan?

Aw dangit, I had a feeling I wasn't being very original. The Fuel is named Radish, because the shade of red is so close to that. I couldn't come up with any blue foods other than blueberries so I looked at shades of blue, and cobalt seemed awfully close to the Octane2 skin. :P

Yup, you got it.

vishnu wrote: Two V12s each with a DCD! Do you actually run it with four monitors? Permanent fastfan?

No, the setup is tragically underutilized at the moment, just a single 1280x1024 Dell monitor. When I eventually upgrade to a multi-monitor setup for my PC the Octane2 will get hooked up to that. And it does not run any louder than my SSI Octane.
where have you found the dual carrier :D ?
bye.

ivelegacy wrote: where have you found the dual carrier :D ?

It came with the system, I haven't made any upgrades to it.
A maxed out system like that; whoever had it before you must have been doing some serious stuff with it. My Octane2 was a boring 400MHz V6 when I got it, but thankfully the disk hadn't been scrubbed and it had fully licensed versions of [redacted] [redacted] and [redacted] software on it. Kidding! I only kid. No seriously...

my gentoo/IP30 has no GFX, I have installed an empty carrier :D
bye.

Well, I'm sure once you've got the kernel running all that nifty IP30 hardware you'll jump right onto the open source xserver for VPRO and MARDIGRAS... ;)

no-no, I guess never again (like happened in 2009 when I had X11 running with V6). I can emerge X11&its X-stuff and use a remote Xserver, or an Xterm, however the IP30 is physically hidden in the attic and profiled as "server", so it's definitely remotely used over the lan and I export X-stuff on my book-air through XQuartz (the best macOSX's App ever :D )
I wish I could enter into the vegetable garden of William Gibson , on the right of a director, to decide how a film is ultimately released for public viewing, but I am not a nor Cyberpunk writer neither a dude in Hollywood , and my * flawless English * still looks like an old rusty trailer which needs a fix-up, so my personal wonderland begins with a pill ... tumbling down the rabbit hole , where the sky above the router port is the color of television, tuned to a dead channel and some gears still need a debugger there.

Nice(!) rig - extra points for the much-less-often-seen factory-configured dual V12/dual DCD setup.

I'm way late to the party, so no doubt it's already been considered, but running SGI's OpenGL Multipipe on that dual 12/dual DCD Octane would be a great way to showcase the capabilities of the system.

Xinerama comes with IRIX, and can do the job of spanning the display of a single desktop across multiple monitors, but its relative ease of access comes at a price - you can only display OpenGL visuals on the monitor(s) attached to the primary graphics pipe. OpenGL Mulltipipe was the classic SGI method to overcome that limitation. Setting up OGLMP is pretty straightforward , my experiences were scattered across a few posts in this thread .

Hi recondas, that sounds good once I get some more displays in here, and thanks very much for the pointers. I can't actually find Multipipe though. I'm pretty sure I had a free supportfolio account from years and years ago, but I'll be damned if I can remember the login. :|

You're more than welcome.

The tardist for OpenGL Multipipe is/was freely available to anyone with a Supportfolio log-in. Hopefully it has survived Rackable's on-going purge of IRIX material.

Be a shame if it's gone, especially considering SGI open-sourced the OpenGL Mulltipipe code (now glamorously renamed by our open source friends as GLOMP ). :D

If it is gone from Supportfolio perhaps Ian would consider including it in his Depot Resources page.
