The collected works of rvic

Hi,
i just tested the 6.5.51 version
Just as someone said before, all you need to do is untar it to /opt and then get the sesi folder from old version 6.1 and get an apprentice license via
http://license.sidefx.com/get_nc_license.php
the license generated for 8.2 version work well for all 6 versions ...
I even made a good install script ... if someone else want it i can put it here ... if it doesn't disturb the rules ...
But, 6.5.51 version crashes on file open and save
the 6.1.208 and 6.1.303 versions work great
The 5.5.230 version too....
By the way, did someone notice any difference fron 5.5 to 6.1 ?
Seems to me the 5.5 version is very stable and fast compared to 6.1.
I have an O2 r12k 400Mhz, 256 ram, no AV i/o, 1280x1024x75, 6.5.30.
I also put some questions on sidefx forums where i'm registered from 2005 ... and here is the answer:

No, Side Effects hasn't developed for IRIX for some time now. I don't think anyone in this business does anymore.

Excellent version,
One of the best working .. 6.5.67, not even one crash ...
Thank you
I've been looking for this version cause it's the last that works with sgi java jdk 3.1.1 or newer but i haven't found anything yet ...
if it's right i would ask someone who has it to share it ... and maybe "plant" it on the nekochan ftp ... with many thanks from me and probably others

pertinent pages follows:

webarchive ...
http://web.archive.org/web/200312060737 ... valuation/

and not the last ...
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16718850&p=7283354&hilit=cosmocode#p7283354

maybe "dc_v01" user in the post above can share the 2.3.1 version of CosmoCode

The are numerous articles on the net that states ... the CosmoCode from sgi was one of the most powerful java development software ever written ...
Later a group took the software into custody but beside the 2.5 windows version nothing is to be found out there

it's getting more and more difficult to find old pages on the search machines these day's ... but not impossible ... thanks for that :)

I also tried lately the bxpro software, the 30 days trial with an extended month thanks to th ics guys and i was wondering if someone knows what is the differences from 1.2 version to the 1.2.1 ot the sgi rapidapp package version cause the doc database on sgi have manuals only for those versions ...
I think that the 6.2 bxpro evaluation version for irix is just up on ics.com ... i used 6.1.4 version ... and i'm impressed ... till the price ... :) ...

thank you

I updated the link to the webarchive site

It very clearly stated ... "free license"
So the 2.3.1 version was given for free ... with a free license ...
This is also the last version ...
The procedure was like that ... subscribe for free on the silicon surf account and then simply download the package and the free license
It can also be seen that the cosmo create 1.0.3, cosmo worlds 1.0.3 and cosmo player 2.1.5 were too free at that time so i guess the whole package cosmosuite the last 1.0.3 was given free ...
After that .. we're talking 2004 ... they remove a lot of softwares from their site .. and cosmo was one of them ...
The specific 1.0.3 suite however is free .. and it will remain that way cause sgi had all ownership privilege at that time ...
I understand that people are somehow reluctant to proprietary software .. but this was and is free software .. and more .. abandoned ... so it's safe

To be crystal clear .. here it is what sgi themselves said about free license software .. and the link too :
Defining Free License Downloads

"Free Lic.

Hi,
I had the same problem in the first place...
I learned that sgi had that strange habit of giving a package but it couldn't install without the "base" part ...
Anyway for your exact question :

The "o2 demos cd" are only the demos for the o2 workstation and it's an upgrade for the general demos that is shipped with the 6.5.x Irix system (so it can't run without that "base_demos")

The base package you can find in the :
1 - June 1998 "Applications cd (first 6.5 version) (this is for version 1.2 of o2 demos )
2 - 6.5.10 Applications cd (this is for version 1.3 of o2 demos, the last)
3 - it could be found probably on other irix distribution versions but that are the most relevant for o2 workstation

So you need the first, it also contains some general demos that works very nice with o2.

From my experience i can tell you that, with the right software, this little machine can become very creative and inspiring ... even today ...
First thing you should upgrade if you plan to use it more is to upgrade the hdd with a quiet one if you didn't already done that ...
See "the O2 hardware aggregator" ... it contains what you need to know.
You're welcomed ...
Maybe i should stick to some reserved position vis-a-vis to irix knowledge but i started an year and a half ago with also an o2 r12k computer ... and i want to share some things that i've learned ...

one would be that this platform is unique .... it doesn't resemble any other platform despite the fact that is a traditional bsd unix derived os ...
First i was thinking ... ahh .. it's unix ... piece of cake ... linux was in my palm already ... not quite :)
This is a new world ... manuals are a pain :) ... and knowledge is a strange mix of trial and error and sustained reading of manuals, docs, and forum topics here.
All native applications are written in a professional way ... what i mean is that 10 years old, or more, applications aren't even matched today in functionality, creativity and, yes, speed.
A simple example ... photoshop for irix is hardware accelerated here, especially on O2, (with a free bundled package for irix) which is a low end workstation.
Another example would be piranha. Piranha is a professional video editing and composing software and it has a match (or maybe not quite), just in these years, in adobe premiere pro (but really, is no match trust me)
There are high end professional applications for video editing, image editing and 3d with features i never met anywhere else but here on Irix.
Sorry for being off topic and sorry for my basic english, sometimes i can't find the right expressions and it's probably a pain for native readers ...
What i wanted to say is that don't be reluctant to ask questions and to ask for help ... here you'll find very nice people ... and they will help you ... and most important they know this platform "to the bone".
The base_demos package is a trivial piece of program and i find, for my part, difficult to accept that you can't enjoy a demonstration of the capabilities of your computer ... in my opinion this is a required start.
I'm convinced that you'll find soon a way to enjoy this ... a simple way always exist ... just that it needs to be found :)
With many thanks for the people that helped me here i just want to do the same ...
yes, in deed ...

It was on the late 1997, back in my graphic design years, when we received this powermac av 8500 with a full av monitor and this A3 umax mirage monster with full transparency unit.
We thought we had a decent graphic lab at that time ... and yes photoshop was somehow accelerated ... for a mac at that time ...
But then we took a very short visit to this old lab on a print house ... and that rearranged all in different perspective...
They had this 4 meters cylindrical scanner ... a beast :) ... and it was managed by a sgi indigo
We saw that a 9600 powermac was working on a small preview of the file ... and the indigo just apply the same steps on the real file ... because it was huge 1GB or more ... and i'm almost shure it was Barco ... (they said a name but it didn't meant anything for us then)
Well, no need to tell you more ... but from that day the mac started to be a nice but just a simple computer to me.
O2 is a much superior architecture in every aspect ... it lacks only the specific software ...
I always enjoy working on it ... it does the same thing but in a professional way ...

Possibilities --- endless ... just that it needs a specific type of software ...
killer looks even by today standards ... i have many computers including laptops and guess about what they are asking ... always ...
I even believe it can be made to hardware encode xvid ...
I was searching for old applications for irix but most of the servers are down including the ones that is mentioned here on neko links and nekoware.

ftp://ftp.mayn.de/pub/irix/ ... that is closed a long time ago (2006 i think) and it was mirrored in
http://se.mirror.nekoware.net/ which is down too ...

i'm looking for the mxaudio which was in the xaudio mips 6 package
it seems there is nowhere to be found ...
it disappeared completely from the web ... strange
Maybe neko can put it in the ftp .. it was a nice application

I'm sorry ... it IS in the ftp ... :) Thanks neko !
It seems it's the last copy of it ... uhhh
Excellent
Wow...
thanks a lot hamei
I shure need it ... :)
awesome

It's a beauty!
This is very welcomed.
very good .. SGI treasure depot
Thank you!
Thank you for the effort

Are these packages for 6.5.22 minimum or they could be installed in let's say 6.5.15 ?

Are there any packages for the lesser versions of 6.5 irix ... prior to 6.5.22 ?

Or should i use the 6.2 ones ... actually that's what i did until now.
For me 6.5.15 seems the best overall distribution ... in speed and stability ... i own an O2.

Thank you
Just to be clear from the start, i thank you for your work and i have waited for many apps like these to be available for lower version of 6.5.22.

I have 6.5.15 and it's clear i cannot use nekoware so i'm stuck with tgcware and your 6.2 apps ...

After i somehow installed dillo3, it's a mix of tgcware and your libs and i ended up with segmentation fault ...

Well ... the problem is ... tgcware is compiled against /usr/tgcware/lib at least that's what i assume
Your 6.2 package installs in /usr/local/lib but, for example, dillo3 doesn't look in there, so i had to put ld_libraryn32_path in my cshrc ... but i already know from experience that is a bad idea.

Then ... dillo3 needs gcc3.46 from tgcware that's linked to some 6.2 patches and some libs from tgcware:
listdcxx newest version and it's strange considering that gcc3.46 is the oldest package, also libgcc newest version same argument.
In the end libiconv is duplicated (tgcware plus 6.2)
Well maybe you could show me a better way :)

I want to express my gratitude for your work ... just to be clear ... i just need a clear path to enjoy them :)
God damn, "hamei".... "Avoid thinking at all costs, it shows in your eyes" ... that is the face of communism ... and i've been there ...
After 25 years of democracy or maybe "learning democracy" i can say that the things that we don't see are the ones that matter ... the others are just obvious distractions ...
The thing that shocked me was that the people that i taught they were decent, intelligent and maybe mindful were in fact immensely stupid, careless and chaotic ... fear does that ... hides all that.
No ... a "reduced" world is not the answer ... because it reduces everything ...
Maybe the answer is to be in two places at once ... pretending you're in the middle but also looking from outside ... measuring, thinking ... making corrections.
The fact that the vast majority of people are sub-mediocre is the answer to this alter-control side of things ... put yourself in those (slick) shoes ...
To be able to create such programs ... to access that level of control for a chipset is a commodity for a very small group of people ...
I'm an electronist and i graduated the microelectronic section ... that means building and programming at low level (firmware) ...
I can tell you this is no job for everyone ...
My big concern is not that ... at all ... the problem is that more and more this techniques are less known and ... more and more the group of the people involved in building these systems are smaller ... and therefor less known ...
In fact i see the future something like ... huge majority of customers ... and a very small fraction of builders ... huge dependence on technology that is no longer transparent to ordinary people (for reasons of security and other bullshits) ... that scares me ...
Think of the movie "soylent green" ... a handful of corporation people manages to reduce the vast majority of the people to a cattle level ... use them against themselves ... and profit ... we're not that far ... this kind of idea will be always vivid in the sick mind of some people ... the same that strives for whole life to lead ... to make big decisions for others ...
But ... meanwhile ... think of the computer you use (to be in touch with the world) .... a "shared unsecure device" that could be used against you ... and the only two privileges you have are: that you can put it anywhere you like ... and you can destroy it anytime you like (of course destroy it at a very low level).
about dillo 3 install ...
this time i did everything a little better ...
first i installed your packages .... jpeg, libiconv, png, zlib ... with "rulesoverride" on libstdc++, libgcc-s1, and gcc3.46 (it asked for them ... tgcware)
so with a little change in .cshrc like this:

setenv LD_LIBRARYN32_PATH .:/usr/lib32:/lib32:/usr/lib32/internal:/usr/java/lib32:usr/freeware/lib32:/usr/local/lib

well after run:
rld: cannot successfully map soname 'libstdc++.so.7' .... etc

fine ... installed "libstdcxx_7-4.5.2-4.tgc-irix6.2-mips3-tgcware.tardist"
add: to .cshrc "/usr/tgcware/lib" in "LD_LIBRARYN32_PATH"
then it needs "libgcc-s.so.1" ... ok installed the coresponding from tgcware ...

then run it again ..... "segmentation fault"
The only package that wasn't installed and bypassed with "rulesoverride" in inst was gcc3.46 ... and indeed it didn't need it ...

Unfortunately it didn't run ... I'm giving a little information ... my system is 6.5.15 (there was a question like why i just don't upgrade, well i don't want to... and i have another hdd with 6.5.26 and everything works fine there but i like more 6.5.15 at least for the O2)
Maybe it needs a certain version of those tgcware libs as i noticed at least 3 versions of the same libs ... and finally maybe it needs something from gcc3.46 package ...

Thank you again foetz for your effort ... and hope you can see a solution :) ... i would really like dillo3 running ...
