NB: a 36GB/15K and 40X CDROM are of course overkill for a system of this type, but the idea is to have the most reliable
items possible, and these should last a good long while. Plus, short of changing the CPU/whatever, it's as fast as it can be.
And at least the disk is totally silent. 8)

Thanks for the info you sent me about that! Looking forward to your summary post on the procedure.

With the old big disks, it's a wonder the PI doesn't take off. :D

When I can I'll see if I have a Turbo somewhere, but not for a while.

I certainly wouldn't call it snappy, but it's useable. Just about. Worth it though IMO in order to have the newer sw stuff beyond 4.0.5.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread...

Does anyone know which resistors to change to set a 3.5X multiplier on an O2 module?

I've built the R12K/300 modded module ok, the pictures in this thread are fine for that (3X multiplier), but I'm
not sure what needs to be moved to change it to 3.5X.

Some benchmark results for the modded 300 module are now on my site (Lynx compilation, RC5 and movie
conversion), performance is identical to an original 300.

Ian.

PS. Just looking at my previous post - the modded Octane modules pretty much worked out ok (dual-R12K/350)
but with one peculiar exception: they passed all the benchmark tests on my site, including the 'heavy' tests like
the Alias render, but trying to clone the system disk onto another drive with xfsdump/xfsretore would almost always
cause a cache error. Wierd...

Today someone asked me about the O2 mod images, so I thought I'd scan in my own diagram I made for changing a 250 module into a 300:

http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/o2/o2modresis ... to_300.gif

Hopefully that's a bit clearer than some other descriptions I've seen.

However, I still don't know what resistors to move in order to have a 3.5X multiplier (to get 350MHz). Anyone know?

Also, does anyone know if the core from an Octane 360 module could be used to get an O2 425? (ie. by moving the core into what was
an original O2/300 module).

Plan:

1. Convert orig O2/300 modules into O2/400 or 425 (whatever's possible if I can use a 360 core from an Octane module).
2. Used the 300 cores removed from O2/300 modules to convert orig O2 250 modules into either 300 or 350 (whatever works best).

I figure one couldn't move a 360 core into a 250 module as the cache would be too different, yes?

I have a couple of 360 modules I can expt with. However, I'd need to know a bit more about the multiplier resistor positions to try it.

I highly doubt it... I was under the impression from earlier comments that the BGA stuff didn't start until the 400 speeds. Hence why I
wonder about being able to fiddle with a 360. An O2/425 would be nice. Orig 400s are too valuable to stick in hobbyist systems.

Oh! In that case I'll open up a 360 when I can find a moment... though if it's over 300 then by definition a 300 should be ok.

Ian.
Thanks for the replies!!

So what about using the core from an Octane 360 module, putting it into an original O2 R12K/300 module? Could this then be adjusted to give an O2/425 or better?

I could move the resulting spare 300 core into an O2 250 module and either leave it at 300 or maybe oc a little.

I wondered whether using an original O2/300 module to hold a core from an Octane/360 would make changing the clock to 400+ easier compared to trying
to put anything quicker than a 300 into a 250 module.

However, atm I'm stuck anyway because I still don't know what resistors to move in order to attain a 3.5X multiplier on an O2 module.

The problem I believe is the 360's and 400's are soldered to the board and are not removable. The R12k-360 is basically a binned R12k-400, so basically if you're overclocking these you are limited to how far you can push the chips.

leaknoil wrote: so odd reading some posts here. 225 ukp for a pci card cage for a octane ? Really ? That is pure insanity. Dual 600 octanes don't fetch that here in the US.

You obviously don't get quotes from commercial SGI dealers (Cordnet happily sells dual-600 Octane2s for 5000 UKP).
225 UKP for a new, never-used PCI cage is a damn good price. I normally sell used cages for twice that much.

I've been badly underselling things this past year and it's cost me dearly, eg. I was selling quad-IP25 boards for 195 UKP, couldn't
work out why they were so popular, until I found out the 'normal' commercial value had risen to nearly 4X that much, ie. other
dealers had been using me as a cheap supplier to their own end customers, making a big markup in the process for free. I can
list dozens of other examples where hobbyists seem to have not the slightest idea how commercially valuable many items are.
See my numerous past posts on this subject here. Ironically, the companies which buy things from me think my prices are crazy low.
One company even complained to a different dealer that my Indy prices are too low because it made their accountants confused
re how expensive the systems were when first bought.

The perceived value separation some hobbyists have really is bizarre. Ask the various dealers for a quote, then get back to me.
The prices I've posted here are less than half what most dealers would charge, in most cases much less than half. If any are
doing better, it's because they have a big stock to ditch or don't care. I, however, am a 1-man operation and everything I sell
directly covers food, rent, taxes, bills and reinvesting for further sales. Quite frankly, if it wasn't for me, hobbyists worldwide
would have no quality/reliable source for SGI items at all . If everyone thought as you, I'd have to give this whole thing
up and do a 9-to-5, bye bye to the world of SGI. I work ruddy hard at this, often at the cost of my personal life, and financially
I'm no better off now than I was when I started 5 years ago, yet I struggle on because I think it's worthwhile.

And as others have said there's how I deal with items, packing, etc. If you want to use eBay, then there's a good chance your
O2 purchase will arrive looking like this (2 systems I bought recently from a guy in France):

http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/o2s.zip

whereas if you buy from me, it'll arrive safe, mint, perfect, fully cleaned, with a mega install like nobody else does. Ask those who've
bought systems from me, if you want confirmation. You get what you pay for. See my feedback pages for numerous examples.
Here are some pics of typical boxes I've posted with O2s:

http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgidepot/pics ... ygdin2.jpg
http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgidepot/pics ... o2box1.jpg
http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgidepot/pics ... o2box2.jpg

http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgidepot/pics/markkirby1.jpg
http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgidepot/pics/tanjashuh2.jpg

I don't try to compete with 'raw' eBay pricing because eBay is full of junk with people who've no idea how to pack stuff. Besides,
eBay is not a land of bargains anymore, those days are long gone. Check the listings, there are hardly any normal auctions
now for SGI items. It's mostly BIN.

Ian.

PS. Apologies for the rant, but sometimes this whole, "everything should be free!" mentality really gets on my wick when I'm doing
16-hour days to survive. I posted the above advert with huge discounts (typically half price) because for 2 weeks from the end of
Nov I sold zilch due to the bad weather (I've done 32 hours of snow shoveling during that time ), ie. with the expense of xmas and the
next rent day approaching, I needed to get some pennies in. And btw, one guy is indeed buying a PCI cage, so QED. :)

Though of course scoffing booze is the last thing one should be doing in severely cold weather. :D

Speaking of cold, anyone know the safe minimum operating temp for an O300 short rack? I managed to obtain one, but had to take
it all apart to get the bits into the garage . I'd like to put it back together, but it's currently -3C outside. Hmm, maybe the safe minimum
temp for me is also a factor... :}

Hehe, on larger boxes I use gaffer tape, in which case I normally include the following text in my 'parcel sent' email:

Code: Select all

You will need a _sharp_ knife to open the box. First cut along the top of the box, inbetween the two adjacent strips of FRAGILE tape.
Then cut along the end side edges. Please retain the packaging at least for a while, in case of any warranty issues.

but maybe I forgot in your case, or perhaps I assumed you were smart enough to work it out on your own. ;D

Quick update for those who may have missed my other post...

My Fuel now has a 120GB SSD, full details here .

Meanwhile, the fastest mechanical disk I've tested with an LSI SAS/SATA card is the Seagate 450GB 15K SAS (15K.7 series),

Question: is your system two dual-1GHz boards? Or a single quad-1GHz? I'm trying to find out what VRM normally drives a dual-1GHz board
as I have such a board but it lacks the VRM. I know a quad-1GHz is normally fitted with with a VRM of PN 060-0210-001 (and a quick swap
showed this version will drive a dual-1GHz ok) but is the version essential for a dual-1GHz or will other versions work ok? I also need the fan

It would be nice to believe this is true and be correct, but alas it's not, by a long way. O2's STREAM results are horrible, while the limited
mem/gfx bw of IR and VPro mean that neither can do more than just over 8-bit 2K. Not sure if IR4 improved the bw rates. Discreet never
supported multiple pipes, and also did not support VPro in high-end systems. In other words, CPU stuff aside, it needs modern gfx to do
this properly. By contrast, modern x86 can handle 4K (6 bytes per pixel) no problem. My "state of the art" PC easily matches/beats the I/O
of a Tezro (in quotes because my PC isn't state of the art, it's just a single quad-core i7 870, tested with just one SAS card and 4 disks,
ie. nowhere near the potential of a dual-socket X58 system with 2 x 6-core Gulftown, etc.)

Of course one can get round the limited gfx bw of IRx for IFFFS by using proxies, but that's a whole other ball game.

As for IRIX ever coming back, other posters are right, nice to dream but it ain't gonna happen. Collective effort would be better spent on
updating freeware apps, some of which are woefully out of date now, eg. mplayer, and of course sorting out browser ports.

They blend more than you would think. Plenty of dealers get hobbyist stuff & sell it on for way more, me included sometimes. S'how I
pay the bills. The last DCD I sold went for about $1700, though sadly I had to buy the bloomin' thing from a dealer for about $1500.
Still made something though.

Anyway, you can say what you like, what the o.p. bought is still a damn good deal IMO.

If you could ship, I can offer $1250 + shipping for the Tezro.

WTA/Titan is a typical shipping option.

I'll do it when I can, but it's a lot more than 5 mins & I have a mountain of other stuff to sort first atm.
