The collected works of chicaneuk - Page 5

Finally managed to get my system over to a friends house this evening as he has an Indigo 2 IMPACT. We were able to confirm that the power supply is still not fixed so will be going back to the company to look into again.

Thanks prime for helping out!

Somehow I doubt that. But we'll see. I'm about to leave the country for a week and a half for work so will have to look into this again when I get back.

Would be a nice project for 3D printing. But must admit it's never bothered me as the drive caddy blanks access off to it!

I just read the other day that the coolant used in those late liquid cooled G5's is especially toxic. I did have one for a while, but luckily it didn't leak - gave it away to another Nekochanner a couple years back.

Glad to hear you got all your stuff back! What's the spec on the Indy? :)

I swear the IMPACT power supplies are the flakiest crap!

I'm mid way through getting my PSU refurbished by a company here in the UK after I ended up with the same situation as you on my R10K IMPACT. They charged approx £250 to refurbish it but to my disappointment it still didn't work. Hoping to get it back to them very soon for another look.

I do appreciate that - just that of all the discussion on SGI stuff on here, Indigo2 IMPACT power supplies seem to be particularly fragile! When I was searching for info when mine died, I turned up a multitude of threads about them.

Should you decide to stick OSX on it, I do have a genuine Apple Leopard install DVD here mate which I'd be happy to loan you.

Looks pristine :) Very nice.

Glad to know that mine isn't alone in it's weirdness though I must admit I haven't tinkered with it since making the post. Pretty sure I don't have any other drives on mine (floppy or whatever) and like you had terminated the SCSI, but I think the CR2302 battery on mine has died since so doesn't really want to play anyway.

Will have to have another evening fighting with it - see if I can get it to behave.

So dragging this back on topic..

Potted history - I acquired the system early in the year. After a month of two of tinkering, it decided it didn't want to power on any more and I guess I was the victim of a duff power supply. I was reluctant to simply buy another old unit, as there would be no guarantees on how long that might last before failing.

I found a company here in the UK who were confident they could resurrect the power supply but a large bill and several weeks later, the system was still not working. I returned the supply to the company who spent more time investigating but eventually threw in the towel and, to their credit, gave me a full refund no questions asked despite having invested significant time in trying to resurrect it. This whole process took a long time, as in between, I took the 'fixed' power supply over to a friends to test on his R10K Indigo2 - I needed to rule out whether there was something more sinister occurring with my system, beyond the power supply, but we confirmed it was just the supply at fault.

This bought us to the middle of the summer approximately. I was all set to just sell off the system minus power supply but folks on here suggested getting in touch with Ian Mapleson and see if he'd consider a trade for my HighIMPACT board set, for the far less desirable SolidIMPACT board and power supply. Thankfully he was amenable to the idea, and so the deal was done.. and here we are, about 8 months after the whole saga began, with a working system again - just in time for christmas. I didn't really want another second hand power supply, but was really keen to get the system back to life, so decided to go for it.

I've dealt with Ian ( mapesdhs ) several times over an approximately 15 year period, and I have to say it's always such a pleasure to deal with him - friendly replies to emails, and his near legendary packaging of the items he ships - he's a real asset to this community. Thanks, Ian!

So.. here's the updated hinv.

That's a brute! Superb!

Would love to know what such a configuration would have cost from SGI back in the day when this was a new system. In fact I dread to think!

I think I can't be alone in saying we'd love to see a couple of pictures of your Octane prototype, assuming you'd be willing to share!

The dual 600 is very desirable and fetches a good premium... Should be able to get your DCD in exchange for that easily!
