Wow, nice work. I never had a G4, but it sounds sweet.

Pretty. But with 768MB of RAM, there's really no point to Virtual Memory being enabled except if you expect to run a *lot* of stuff simultaneously, from which you would benefit from the file mapping. Otherwise, OS 9 is happier with it off, and faster.

That's apparently OSX "classic" mode's doing, it keeps enabling it...

FX5200 and Radeon 9200 coming my way. The previous owner says the former is rather unstable (kernel panics too often to please) under Tiger, but rock solid under Leopard. Did anyone encounter such problems before?

Use separate system folders for OS 9 and Classic. You'll get a lot more mileage that way. You can just duplicate the System Folder and tell Classic to use the duped folder.

Usually it's the other way around -- some marginal systems are iffy in Leopard but rock solid in Tiger. Tiger is a much more optimal choice for this machine, though you could coax it to run Leopard, of course.

Tried, worked, thanks for the hint.

However, I'm somewhat disappointed with the performance of 9.2.2 on this machine. Ran The Songs of Distant Earth and, despite of superior hardware over LC630, the performance was mediocre (choppy video, not much load speed improvement over AppleCD 300 in LC). Plus, DVD playback doesn't work for some reason and network uplink is a joke - 80 kb/s, sometimes falling below 16 kb/s.
In "classic" mode it's even worse - a thing that ought to be expected, but I wouldn't expect it being THAT worse.

Do you have an accelerator for the video card enabled? That would be the first thing I'd check, especially since the DVD player may depend on it. The Rage Pro should support that.

Classic mode may or may not benefit from that, but OS 9 natively definitely will.

Yes, both Rage Pro Accelerator and generic ATI accelerator enabled. Also, I have finally received two "flashed" AGP cards, an FX5200 and Radeon 9200. Will see if that helps.

I've got a Quicksiver G4 that neko setup with nVidia GeForce 7800 GS graphics (along with Sonnet dual 1.8GHz G4 processors and a SATA boot drive). Very snappy for a G4 power Mac, but I don't have time to give it the use it deserves.
