Thoughts on the new macbook? - Page 3

That's okay, GL .... facts are facts. No point in calling a janitor a "sanitation engineer." :)
I used to have a 13" White 2007 MacBook (2.16 C2D IIRC) but when it bit the bullet in early 2010 and Apple gave me the chance to upgrade under warranty and I took it with out questioning and got the 15" 2010 MBP with the discrete nvidia graphics and core i5. I immediately regretted it. I ditched larger laptops when I went to the 13" (I had a 17" Toshiba before it) and was never happier. Getting the 15" was a total step backwards in that liberation. That said, my only complaint about 15" IS the size.

So, as many have said before me...

Like: Thinner, lighter, cool screen, wicked fast.
Dislike: Lack of ethernet, super drive (I actually NEED to burn dvds on my MBP regularly), and 0 maintenance options.
Will I be buying one? No, I don't think so. Could I make it fit my needs? Probably, but my 2010 MBP has already seen 3 hard drive upgrades and 2 RAM upgrades and burnt hundreds of DVDs and troubleshooted countless wired networks.

Now, that all said, if the wife to be needs a new home laptop, she would probably *love* it. ;)

If we got you a screen that was 2860 pixels wide, would you create 50% more good code per day ? :P

Either that or we'd stumble yet again across the law of diminishing returns...

Hate to tell you this, vish, but you're obviously not Manager material. You have a basic grasp of reality :(

I know! I can tell because I stopped believing in reality a long time ago but it never went away...

You better stop posting this stuff in public or you'll never get a white collar position in Management. Any real manager does not believe in Reality, even if it reaches up out of the grunter and takes a big chomp out of his ass. They can always come up with some horseshit loser excuse to explain away their stupidity, even when it flies in the face of the facts. Heck, especially when their story flies in the face of all fact.

Look to Mr Greenspan for your inspiration, that guy is a true master of Business Logic. Got a degree, too. He must be smart !

A little practice in gobbledygook and perhaps you, too, could qualify for the Harvard Business School. You could be a Visionary ! An Innovator ! A fucking useless fool with a big salary ! Wouldn't that be cool ?

Not a chance. Theme parks are too smart to hire MBAs. You have to have a functioning brain* to operate potentially dangerous equipment.

* i.e., can deal with problems more complex than, "How much larger will my bonus be if I fire two guys in q/c and threaten the rest with losing their jobs so they shut up ?"

Close; but cut from the same cloth, my CEO is Linda Hudson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Hudson I've met her a couple of times, she's very pleasant, probably because she's an up-the-hard-way engineer not a Havahd Business grad, to borrow a phrase from your patios...

Anyway, she announced another round of layoffs on Thursday so I'm definitely keeping my burger flipping skills up to snuff for the foreseeable future...

Haysoos, did you read that crap ? "She leads approximately 46,000 people across more than 130 sites ..." What does she do, organize expeditions to steal a pickanick basket ? What do you do on Mondays, vish ? Get on the plane for the 130-site obstacle course, with Ms Hudson carrying the flag ?

Who writes this shit ? Do they teach grammar in school now ? Has the world been commandeered by a generation of pimply ignorant little twits ?

Indeed! She's smarter than the average bear...

Even if we did do that, it still wouldn't be good enough for our corporate overlords... It's our responsibility, as employees, to make whatever sacrifices need to be made in order for the company to be successful!

Whee! I haven't had a dose of hamei rants in a while. Glad I checked this thread.

For me, there seems to be a potential divergence in computing right now. The consumer market and the scientific market. For the average consumer, sleek design (form-factor) and ease of use (OS) is king since the computing power to read email, write documents and (yes) make spreadsheets is minimal since the user-in-the-loop is the real limiting factor.

On the scientific/engineering side, computing simulations are still several orders of magnitude too slow. Even with a billion dollars, if your task is not readily parallelizable, you are screwed. No computer on Earth is fast enough for a full-fidelity model unless you are willing to wait weeks for a result.

With graphics it is similar. Desktop icons and eye candy---no problem. Synthesizing physically accurate light-transport imagery at real-time rates in still problematic to say the least.

If scientific computing was driving the market, we would have 128-bit quad-precision math in hardware (e.g. Itantium) a decade before extra long-life batteries.

What was in the 1990's a nice confluence between the consumer's and engineer's desire for faster CPUs, seems to be diverging now. The lastest "advancements" (e.g. hyper-threading) are starting to seem useless for number-crunching.

My current fear is that Apple will drop the Unix-based OS X on their laptop for an iOS-based one and I won't be able to even run the engineering software I develop on a Mac any more. Although, to be honest, it has never performed quite as well on a Mac as it does on a Linux workstation---something is weird/slow about how they allocate/free memory and the OpenGL graphics drivers have definely lagged the NVIDIA ones for Linux.
