uptime contest ! - Page 3

vishnu wrote: Duck, heat pump do you mean swamp cooler? Those are awesome in arid environments but don't work for crap in humidity.

No, I think it merely indicates that it can do both heating and cooling. In any event, I don't know so best not guess :-)

But if you like yours Classic I'm sure it will be more than good enough for me, what version is it?

I think those reviews are based on unreasonable expectations. For the same power usage, a portable A/C will almost always be less efficient than a window-mounted unit, let alone a central system. If you're trying to use a portable A/C to cool a large uncontained space, it will use a lot of power and do a relatively lousy job. Plus, people don't do smart things like wrap the exhaust ducting, or they try tricks like lengthening the hose beyond the rated capacity (I, uh, may or may not have done this and may or may not have found out this was a bad idea), or they expect that a portable unit with a separate intake hose will work without it (they won't, because most portable A/Cs cause negative pressure in the room they operate).

After all that I didn't post the model. It's an LG LP1111WXR. The related LG LP1311BXR is mechanically identical.

For an individual room, if it's long-term I still think the aircons we use here are the way to go. The fan and some cooling coils are inside the room in a box high up on the wall, the compressor and heat exchanger live outside. It's all connected by a couple insulated hoses through the wall. 3" hole through the wall is enough. They make them in small sizes, too.

Ha ha that is awesome! I was thinking about doing the same sort of thing, to pump air up from my basement through the laundry chute to the computer room, with fans on both ends... 8-)

Thanks! I'll be picking one up at the Home Despot post-haste. Ipso-facto...

Vendor? I'm not a guy who's afraid to put three inch holes through the wall of his house, in fact I've got my three inch hole saw right here...

Just remember, if you do buy one, to use it in a contained space (preferably with the door closed), wrap the exhaust heat duct with fleece or insulation, and do not add an extension to or pinch the exhaust duct it comes with. The fan is rated just enough to get the air out of that into a low-pressure area and no greater. I got out my hole saw and put a hole in the ceiling to run it through under the roof turbine vents, but I can get away with this because the humidity here is so low. In your neck of the woods, I would vent directly to the outside since the exhaust has some amount of moisture in it; condensation and rot in the attic would be Bad(tm).

Did a little looking - in the US it's called a "split system." Works well cuz the hot part is outside and the cold part is inside. We have Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, and a gazillion local brands. Seems like the prices in the US are ridiculous tho. A small one (8,000 btu) here is about $150.

Haha - mine too. But I'm also married, so just like my various SGIs, it doesn't get used nearly as much as it should.

Who says Windows isn't reliable? ;)

Let's not talk about the fact that of course this system hadn't been patched in all that time as well... thankfully took this just before we decommissioned it! :)

Oh - found another!
