Abuse for Irix - Help Required - Page 1

I've got XMMS 1.27 compiled with MIPSPro 7.3 on my octane and it seems to be having an issue with ID3v2 tags. When ever I play a song with ID3v2 tags it either crashes, or if I disable ID3v2 tags, skips through a large portion of the mp3. Has anybody had a problem like this before? It also seems to crash if the 3d spectrum analyzer is enabled in the config file on startup.

Could you tell us what output plugin you are using?
I had similar issues (not the same, but similar) when I was using the default audio output plugin.

I have the exact same issue with the SGI Freeware version of XMMS.

I'm using both the "libIRIX.so" IRIX audio plugin v0.6 and the "libsgial.so" SGI Digital Media Output plugin 1.0 and that doesn't seem to affect things. It does fix the crash issue when I modify the settings for the input plugin "libmpg123.so" to ignore ID3v2 tags but then the files do not play properly.

I got my mitts on Abuse for Irix (a nice side-scrolling platform game). The game is now public domain and open-source since the company behind it has dissolved.

However, I cannot manage to get sgi-Abuse to recognize the files from the registered version. The execution stops with an undefined error which I have traced back to the file "english.lsp" in the "register" folder. Removing or renaming that file only results in a different error message. If you rename or remove the "register" folder altogether the game runs (with only four levels) without any problems. Any help would be much appreciated. Get the whole package from here:

http://assyrix.homestead.com/files/Abuse_1.10.tar.gz

As for the music - the sgi version doesn't support music :(
Look at this port. should be working.

Would somebody please compile it since I only got the old 7.2 compilers and rather have a speedy version of Abuse (i.e. not use gcc)? I could host the finished binary if required.
I tired both with gcc and mipspro 7.3 and they are both slow.
well on my octane r12k 300.

oh and the sound suck but this is maybe because sdl sound driver
is crap, I have to try with esd.
Posted the tardist on neko ftp site. to use this you will need the datafile
from http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~trandor/abuse/

and you should use esound SDL audio driver.
oh and the tardist do not select the software by default
so you have to custom install it sorry.

The tardist has been moved to the webserver download area:

I won't be able to test until late evening :(

Great... I´m a love it...
I alway seem to be dense when it come to getting these games up and running.
I get:
:abuse.sdl
Added himem block (3072000 bytes)
Memory available : 3071864
Abuse-SDL 0.7.0
Abuse (Version 2.00)
Sound : Disabled (couldn't find the sfx directory)
Specs : main file set to abuse.spe
No network driver, or network driver returned failure
Lisp : 527 symbols defined, 99 system functions, 319 pre-compiled functions
Unable to open filename art/dev.spe for requested item c_mouse1

A little assistance would be much appreciated.
did you downloaded and installed the datafile in the proper directory?
the tardist dont include everything
Nope. Appearently I have an aversion to reading instructions. Sorry.

Whew, sorry I took so long getting around to this! I went ahead and repacked the tardist so the registered datafiles are a default yet still optional part of the package which makes it much easier to set up (plug and play now). I also included the source code as an optional install.

I had some problems with the libsgial.so plugin, so I hacked up a quick patch to make the output selection actually work. As a result, I was offerd to take over the maintenance of the plugin. Since I'm not really into listening to .mp3s - the Octane promo songs are now, after 2 years the first mp3s to find their way onto my O2 - I don't think I'm really the right one to take over this project. Also, due to the low number of .mp3s, I'm not really able to reproduce the problems mentioned here ;-) There are still some problems left in the BUGS file that would need to be fixed. Anybody here with enough time, knowledge of C, mp3s and motivation to take this thing into his hands?

The original author of the plugin doesn't even own any MIPS boxen anymore, only ia64 ;-( so someone else really has to take this over.
The problem isn't due to output plugins, but the weirdness of the mpg123 plugin.

I've tried compiling the latest xmms, but it the mpg123 plugin doesn't want to work at all for me (missing symbol)
