Berkeley has been having major difficulties since last Friday, their upload/download machines have been crashing all over the place.

However, and this is good news, as of 1825 UTC, I'm up on my O2.

Woohoo! Not that I expect any kind of major calculations out of it, but it's a good retirement for the blue toaster.

And no, I never did get the ssl directory that shows up in nekonoko's directory structure.

Looks like both link to the same place, just a different URL.

Poor old 486 box doesn't remember how to boot up. Am I gonna have to teach him DOS before he remembers? I dunno, I only have a day before I leave home, it's like teaching spelling to a kid.

Hi,

I entered http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/ for the URL, but what is an account key.
Do I have to sign up for one? Should I use a nekochan one? How do I get my units credited toward the nekochan team? Sorry for the newbie questions.

Now some performance related questions.
Does it automatically multiprocess? I have an Origin3400 32x400 that I want to test against an Origin2000 32x400. Does it use much memory. If so, would I have to configure the memory to 32GB on the Origin2000 to match the Origin3400 to be fair or is it going to go unused. My default was to config the 2000 with 8GB.

I did a search, and foud out tat the hostname should not be [isaac], but from the url you are looking to attach to like [setiathome.berkeley.edu].
For some reason it looks like the hostname isaac is compiled into boinc instead of getting it from the url?
So I put the following entry into my hosts file "quote]128.32.18.152 setiathome.berkeley.edu isaac[/quote]
and now is seems to be working because it just said:

Well, I was wrong. Something is wrong. I don't know what it was doing that was so CPU intensive, but after about 10 minutes, it stopped and said.

Is Einstein@Home open source? I don't see a source code download on their page. Without the source - no IRIX port.

Edit: Now I can't even get the Einstein@Home project page to load from here - I'm cursed!

Well, my partner in crime here at work got his hands on the source, he was a beta tester for it, but he couldn't get it to compile with mips pro on our 32 proc o2k. (will post hinv next week after RAM upgrade) Don't remember what the problem with the code was right now, and we didn't have time to mess with it. I'll see if he has the current source code.. I'll keep you all posted if anyone wants to give it a shot

Doesn't surprise me - the current BOINC/SETI client for MIPS was apparently compiled with gcc. The code's not the most elegant from what I understand

I did try and give it a spin myself under MIPSpro but it died very early on. BOINC is written in C++ which isn't a language I'm versed in.

Does this mean I need to have SSL installed on my computer to get work units from the scheduler? Sorry, I've always run this from the command line.

I am Gus's cohort in crime. I did get the source but I can't reveal how. It was under a strict promise to keep it a secret. However, I can tell you about the problems I had with it.

BTW, this is based off of source code I got in December 2004. This may be old news.

The main problem with compiling boinc on a non-linux/mac/sparc machine is that it is using c++ constructs that ANSI has deprecated. ANSI has dictated that 'using namespace std;' is not to be used any more. ANSI now wants you to only include the name spaces that you are using. For example, 'using namespace std::cout;'.

This wouldn't be too much of a problem but boinc has lots of source files and in the source files, they always have a line for using namespace in the deprecated way. This compiles fine with g++ because gnu compiler group decided to let people continue to use the old way. However, compilers based off of strict ANSI guidelines, have major problems. This is a huge problem when porting. Basically, you have to go through every file and figure out which namespace it is using and have only those namespaces included on the line. It is a big pain.

Don't get me wrong. I like einstein@home. I run it on all my machines except my SGI boxes. It just not viable to port at this time.
