Real question is if there is anything on Linux that is not available for Windows first? Otherwise there is no real reason to use Linux at all and might just as well use Windows as Windows versions are most likely better in every way anyway.

Linux is good for browsing the web and lot of things need to happen first before it actually gets more useful for general purpose computing.
My point is that many people for an example with Apple systems and OS X are still using the same software that works just as fine on Windows and some even better as the Windows versions usually come first and other versions are just put together with left hand and in a hurry.

Windows is not the best operating system in the world but is not that bad if you only run software on top of it and not care about the rest. I do not find Unix or derivates that good for desktop use also as the strenghts it has are also the biggest weaknesses and frankly people deserve something better than either of those. Something new and fresh and not the same thing only in different package.
My first Voodoo card was Hercules Stingray 128/3D but sadly had to revert my overclocked AMD 5x86 (486) system back to 133 MHz from the 160 MHz it was running, or otherwise the 3D acceleration would not work. It was pretty nice system still and certainly could hold its own vs early Pentium systems.

After that I got Voodoo 3 3500/TV to watch television in my student flat after television broke down and still have Voodoo 5 5500 card tucked in closet that was latest and greatest 3DFX card I ever had.

but my Dad actually has a RiscPC SA as his main workstation to get things done...

I'm impressed. Does he do this in RISC OS or something else?

RISC OS has plenty of good software to get things done and personally I would take RISC OS over linux any day. I am pretty much only using my Windows PC for 3d-modelling, web browsing and watching videos. Everything else is much more relaxing to do on RISC OS.

Having owned both Octane and Fuel, I must say that Octane is much cooler system as a workstation. Fuel is pretty much like a standard PC, while Octane is awesome in every way the Fuel is not. Fuel is maybe a smarter choice from the two, but then again if it would be deciding factor, you would not be lookin for a SGI system anyway.
Playing with Metasequoia and toying around with Renderman. Very relaxing.
I had fully loaded NeXTstation Turbo Color but was not overly impressed about it.

It felt slow and in my opinion should not feel like that when you are running the software originally intended at the time. Too much disk accessing for my liking and the operating system was also in German language, that I never learned despite of taking one course when was studying.

Was more impressed when I got my first Acorn system (A4000), and gave the neXT away for coffee money when lost my hobby/storage space.
Sitting in Helsinki and preparing for half marathon. Will be hard as have not trained almost at all this year.

I ran one time 5 kilometers last week and it felt pretty bad.
Not feel like sleeping yet, so watching Jurassic Park from television and playing with Polybrush sculpting tools. Is pretty good for shaping the general form after some practice.
