The collected works of Trekiej - Page 1

Hello. Newbie here.
I was wondering if getting a Prizm would be good for HD video work.
Do you prefer Mips or Intel?
If I buy a machine, is there any software and hardware I could get to test a machine out?
Thanks.
Thanks, I see that there are some Onyx machines for sale online. I think I might pick up a machine for the fun of it if the price is right.
Is Irix hard to get?
I guess Linux Itanium should be relatively easy to get.
Cool, thanks, the Octane was looking better.
Being one who meddles like I do, I would like to network some machines to work on the same problem.
How is blender?
cool. :)
What would a Fuel cost?
How does one deal with the Sync On Green connection when you have a svga moitor? :(
Thanks to all for replies, I have a lot to learn.
I used to be some what a follower.
I still have questions I want to ask but I am about ready to go to work.
A question I could ask is, how is gen-locking with sgi machines?
I would like to use ntsc composite/s-video and do some chroma keying.
Also, I saw a SGI Iris Indigo for sale, how well do you like this machine?
Cheers.
Alright then, I will keep this in mind.
Are gen-locks common in sgi machines?
Also, are they hard to acquire?
Cheers.
Cool, thanks for the excellent help.
Awesome collection Classic'.
How are the scuzzy ssd's these days?
Maybe I should have asked about scsi to sata or sas.
Thanks again.
I hope I am not bugging too much. ;)
Okay, are dual processors for the Octane and O2 hard to get?

Does Elan graphics have texture memory?
*I heard it was good with 3D but textures slowed it down.
I am not a graphics expert so here goes.
I under stand that there is Ray-tracing and Scan-line Rendering.
Is there any software that would use OpenGL for animation?

Thanks.
How about Machinima or the program Iclone?
Would an SGI machine accelerate any of that?
If I were to use software GL, is there any reason I could not make a high resolution image ( a single frame with say a million polygons ) with textures and save that as a jpeg?
edit=2;
If I were building a single frame with a lot of triangles and textures in it, I wonder if it would take minutes to build.
I am not talking about 30 fps or anything like that.
If it took one minute to 5 minutes per frame to render, I guess it should in theory be possible to make a high detailed render using OpenGL.
Then it would probably depend on the the capabilities of the hardware, ram, cpu, etc.
I believe the new Blender can animate and record the view port, If I have heard correctly.
I guess there could be CAD software that could animate an OpenGL object.
Thanks.
:D
Thanks, I guess you all know that in pc land that there are some applications that use "game technology" to make animations. I guess I am not for sure why the idea did not get picked for other platforms. (Quake and I believe Unreal are some apps that used this idea)
edit:
Maybe I should have asked about CAD. If a CAD app. used opengl, I guess the limitation is some where between the app and the hardware on exactly how detailed an image can be.
8-) :D
Maybe I will get a chance to see how Quake III and others will do on SGI Workstations.
If I write an application that uses OpenGL, do I not have the choice, depending on what machine it is, to use a software render or hardware accelerated render? I wished I had followed the DirectX and OpenGL on pc video cards back in the 90's to see what actually made them directx or opengl compatible.
Thanks. :D
What is it like to use the Infinite Reality graphics?
I am wondering if the Graphics is liquid in flow when rendering to screen.
So how much data are we talking about?
1. Resolution
2. Texture mapped Polygons/sec.
I think of it as a pick-up truck. Load it down and slower it goes. Empty and it goes fast.
Oh wow
I still would like to have a rack system that is about 6 ft tall full of 1u cases and processor.
If I could afford it.
Sure, I can understand that I need more than 1U's in a rack. This is more of a wish list than an actual lay out. ;)

With the Octane2, how detailed of a model can I make before it chuggs? The peecee recommendations for Blender seems to be higher than what some of the machines have maxed out.

I can get 220v/60hz, but could not pay the bill though. :( :D

It is cold in here.

I do not want to sound like I am down playing these machines, It would have been more revealing if I had one when it was released and compared it other machines at the time.
I admit that an AMD OpenGL card with 2 Gb ram sounds tempting at the moment.

Cheers.
@ guardian452
Thanks for the post. I want to check out a machine to see how it runs certain task or application. I do not want to buy one just for that. It would be like buying a 4K Gaming rig just to experience it and never playing with it again. I wish had a job that could use these machines it would justify the cost at least.
It is funny to see people selling Blender on ebay, and a little bit sad.
I do like the desk side, but an empty rack to put stuff in over time would be cool.
If SGI works well with Win/Lin/BSD for a render farm I could be happy with that.
With video cards taking the load off for Raytracing it would be hard to get a rack unless it had 12 to 24 core Xeon.
singing; I want my... I want my S.. G.. I.. bring in the drums and a guitar solo
That takes me to wanting to find out about LuxRender.
Awsome, I stil need to do some more research.
Is there any machines out there that can do 4k level gaming that is not a high end pc/mac?
I guess I will have to stick with finding out what will make a high quality model/scene and then send to render.
I wish I could use Blender game engine and record that. I believe Blender can animate viewport for a whlle now.
It uses opengl and maybe that is a better example I was looking for earlier.
I am sorry, did SGI ever reach a 4k level?
I still think that SGI machines are cool, great, awesome, excellent, even if they are new or used.
Thanks, I love to collect computers, games macines, etc.
I wish the fun was back in computing.
Sorry, you will have to PM me over the 4k question.
I guess I am really really running out of stuff to ask. :D
The wheels screech like the tortured cries of a hundred suffering children, though. Yikes.
Are these picts still available?
thanks
edit:
cool pix
Is there a bounty system here?
I wish for a new Blender release even though I do not own an SGI computer. Now that makes sense doesn't it?
NSA...
