Hello,

If you can have a look on the site of sgi support it is clearely stated to apply first a patch before installing and that since 6.5.20.
I guess it will be the same for the further release.
And I m not sure but I guess it is also stated in the booklet that come with the overlay.
But normaly it should be possible to restart the mobo due to the socket U10 which a kind of emergency socket when having trouble with the prom.
But where to find the "replacement" part is another story...

In everycase it is a good idea to explain it in the forum before someone burns a octane which would be a real shame.

Hello,

Yep true it's stated no where that not using the patch will kill an octane.
Really bad... For SGI and everyone of us.

I am agree with semy-fly that should figure out on the main page with a big red warning...
The first set of 6.5.21 are already on ebay...
If we don't want to have dead mobo in friends house...

So please do. Place a big warning...

Hello,

chicago-joe : would an O2 with an R5K@180Mhz be a "good base" for that mod. Do you have any idea for the 900Mhz version of the cpu to come out?. I have seen an 825Mhz proc on the site of pmc? Any idea/advice?

Hello,

Hummm "bad".
So what can we take as "base" for that kind of mod.
Any R7K sure?
R5200?
Because I never found any R7K here around only R5K/R10K/R12K and one time in my life I have seen 02+.

Kind regards,

Charles

Hello,

Would anyone be interrested in trying to port KDE 3.2 to irix
as soon as it will be available?
I would but I am not sure I have enough knowledge to do that...
And the job sounds pretty big.

Hello,

Do you think we should try with qt 3.3? Or latest qt 3.2?

Hello,

So KDE 3.2 has been released today.
I have build qt 3.3 beta with the MIPSpro quite easily.
I must still investigate a problem with that.

Sources are already on my home dir.

So be ready for questions soon.

Hello,

So sounds bad news... If on linux it already fails... Grrr Beta is Beta
I can give it a try with 3.2.3 just to remove the suspicion from 3.3Beta1...

But I get 3.3 compile... and first bad thing...
When I issue and ldd on libqui.so it is linked with libqt-mt.so.3 but not from my lib dir but from the lib dir of the sources??? Bweuh...
Any idea?

Ok there is a stupid -rpath pointing to the wrong place grrrrrrrrrr
One more build...

I will give a try with 3.2.3 just to see...
I have decided to go with 3.2.3... Will go with 3.3 the day it will be released.

Hello,

To contiune the game... QT 3.3 is out... :-)
So tonigh I will try with my previous learning to build a proper nice and clean QT 3.3 mips3 n32 and place it into /opt/kde.
I hope to finish with that tonight.

Hello,

Finally it arrives...

I am unable to build arts...
I can build a part of it with cc and a lot of hacking than it complains about unresolved symbols...
I hace tried with gcc and it complains on my qt library saying QString::null unresolved symbol and that during the configure...

There I have no clue to continue further...
I can of course try to build a QT 3.2.3 and give it a test...

For the rests I have sucessfully build nearly all the dependencies of the kdelibs :
openssl,pcre,libxml2,libxslt,libart-lgpl,libjpeg,libtiff,libpng,expat,graphviz,doxygen

Now I am blocked.

Any idea?

Hello,

Due to a serious lack of time.
(I have to reborn my nice linux alpha system)
Due to the fact the task is too big/hard/complicated for my own tiny person.
Due to the fact that everything is ready for gnome 2.4 on nekochan.

I decide to gave up on that crazy project of mine.

Hello,

I am still finally fighting with kde 3.2.
I can't resolve my self to abandon on a failure.

And mainly with arts...

I got the following with mipspro C/C++ 7.3.1.3

cc-1239 CC: ERROR File = dispatcher.cc, Line = 1004
"cerr" is ambiguous.

cerr << "WARNING: got corrupt MCOP message !??" << endl;

It is possible to solve this by chqmging iostream in iostream.h
Sounds mipro don't know which cerr to use whem both iostream and iostream.h are included

cc-1312 CC: ERROR File = /usr/include/unistd.h, Line = 525
More than one instance of overloaded function "getdomainname" has "C" linkage.

extern int getdomainname(char *, int);

A non solution is to remove that definition out of the header file... dumb but working
Or should I really consider to update to the latest overlay since I am still using 6.5.17 and a lot of changes have occured in 6.5.18.

I didn't try it yet with gcc since I have to rebuild QT with gcc also...
And I would like to hev everything mipspro builded...

Regards,

LoWeN

Hello,

For all the info I have found on the net :
MXI = SSI + 2 TRAM
SSI ~= 2 x SI
But the SI/SSI/MXI familly is the biggest space heater in terms of gfx board.
And the TRAM for the SI familly are not "that" reliable...

The ESI/ESSI/EMXI aka SE/SSE/MXE familly is consuming less and heating less than the previous generation. It also sounds that the TRAM modules for them are much more reliable than the one from the SI/SSI/MXI familly.

It also sounds but that's not at all clear that the ESI/ESSI/EMXI familly is "much" stronger than the SI/SSI/MXI familly but no one can give a clear benchmark for that.

I would recommend to try to get the R12K and than when money comes try to get and EMXI/ESSI depending if you need texture memory or not.

Appart if you can affor :
V6 odyssey board are now at 500$ on xsnet...

Hello,

squeen would it be doable in a time to be able to run multiple instances of iconbar on a desk and choose it s position.

I explain myself : In general I work with group of icons on the top left the "root" programs (a shell login with root I know it is a bad habit but so it is)
On the left all the programs I have opened (mozilla gaim etc etc etc etc etc)
On the right my shells I am using for developpement.
On the down various stuffs I don't use much.

Would it be possible to have that idea with various iconbars and the possibility to drag and drop in between them? And also to sometime keep icons out of iconbar?

Otherwise I use it at work and it is a state of the art software.

Hello,

It could help...
It would surely help at work...
Root on the left My apps on the right. Tooooo Gooood:-)
If I can moderate myself at home with my number of open apps...
Thats was a bad idea of me to buy an octane with 1gb ram...
Last I have made almost desepear the desktop behind icons...
Some people find that I am crazy? Am I?

Hello,

Dexter1 welcome in the try.
Building kde went really easy on my octane and tooks around 1h30 minutes.
But Iwas killed by arts and C++.
I hope you will have more success with 6.5.20 and MIPSpro 7.4.
Sounds that 6.5.17 + 7.3.1.3 will never do the work:'(

Keep us posted I am fairly impatient to see and maybe help.

Hello,

nvukovlj GNUTLS is a PITA.
I never managed to get a clean build of that crap.
Around 6 dependencies.
One is requiring to have /dev/random or use EGD to generate random numbers.
As soon as my setup will be ready I will give that another shot.

NauSeum : builded with gcc I assume?
I only tried with MIPSpro.

Hello,

nvukovlj : Yep sure. Sometime it is a real nightmare.
But it is also some kind of "challenge".
Some day you suceed some not. That s life after all.

NauSeum : Not compiling with MIPSpro is not a problem when it is a temporary solution or
sometime final solution when it is impossible to beat the code.
I mean don't worry I was just wondering in case you find the trick to compile it with MIPSpro.
If you had succeeded I would have asked you how you did it:-)
I would also say that compiling gaim with MIPSpro is "easy" a good configure,
a few line to hack... But dependecies... :-)

Ok in any case good job done always worth it.
So if NauSeum can provide the tardist to help the others.
I will take my chance later:-)
Probably not before september:'(

Hello,

Any tape drive past the DLT iV is requiring to use a "tape daemon"
requiring a license depending on the tapedrive used... to use at full speed.

on ps -ef you have line like :
/usr/etc/ts/tslto SEAGATE ULTRIUM06242-XXX /hw/tape/tps6d1reqt
for a seagate LTO1 drive for example.
Started by /etc/init.d/ts

It is provided by a cd called APD (here APD 2.7 for 6.5.24)
The commercial name is personality daemon.

@+

LoWeN
UX powered
Hello,

You are loosing your time.
You must pay the APD licences for LTO.

Everything past the dlt is now used via a special daemon.

Hello,

I give it a go with MIPSpro 7.4.4.
I comes nearly easily till the end but it bombs on :

/usr/src/dosbox-0.65/src > CC -g -O3 -mips4 -Wl,-rpath,/usr/nekoware/bin -Wl,-rpath,/usr/nekoware/lib -Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/bin -Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/lib -L/usr/nekoware/lib -L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/lib32 -o dosbox dosbox.o cpu/libcpu.a debug/libdebug.a -lmx dos/libdos.a -lmx fpu/libfpu.a hardware/libhardware.a gui/libgui.a ints/libints.a misc/libmisc.a shell/libshell.a hardware/serialport/libserial.a -lSDL_sound -L/usr/nekoware/lib -lSDL -lpthread -lpng -lz -lSDL_net -lGL -lgen -lmx -lm
CC WARNING: -g conflicts with -O; changing to -O0; if you want -O, use -g3
ld32: WARNING 84 : debug/libdebug.a is not used for resolving any symbol.
ld32: WARNING 84 : /usr/lib32/libmx.so is not used for resolving any symbol.
ld32: WARNING 84 : /usr/lib32/libGL.so is not used for resolving any symbol.
ld32: ERROR 33 : Unresolved text symbol "lround(double)" -- 1st referenced by dos/libdos.a(cdrom_image.o).
Use linker option -v to see when and which objects, archives and dsos are loaded.
ld32: INFO 152: Output file removed because of error.

I can't figure out how to make it compile there.

I have already replaced all the weird ar by CC -ar -o.
I have added to the line -lgen -lm -lmx to suppress some errors... but the lround remains.

Also I knwo it comes from <src>/src/dos/dos_image.cpp where I have added :
extern long int lround(double);
since it does not take it from <cmath>

Any idea?

Hello,

I got it.

Add the following line in src/dos/cdrom_image.cpp :

extern long int lround(double);
#pragma optional lround

On the final build for dosbox add -lgen -lm -lmx on the line.

Now the keyboard is all screwed up.
I will try to fix that.

Hello,

Some more additions :

- You can use /etc/hosts.equiv with "+ +" line. Confortable when you need to redeploy a large amount of systems.
You don't need to create a huge amount of entries in /home/guest/.rhosts
- After a failed attemp the system might bug you with a message teeling you that a previous miniroot is already existing. What ever you try it will end up with a can't find unix on partition(1). resetenv will fix it.
- Strange problem I faced. After a resetenv my system boot normally. Load miniroot normally. Then nothing anymore. In fact my console goes to the serial. I tried to do setenv -p console g. No luck. So don't worry and have a look at your serial after the reinstall it will be fixed.
- I have extracted all my cds under a folder representing it's name. Symlinking is not working under tftp.
So I had to make a 6530 folder and copy all my 3 cds under it instead og having 6530_cd1 and link under 6.5.30 folder.
But it nicely works for the nfs further on at the time you open distro. So I have done it for the base.
- With 6.5.30 don't load the complementary application at the install time or your print system will default to esp printpro and it requires a license.
