Fuel 900Mhz, 4GB, V12, DCD, DM6

I was able to trade a bunch of stuff for this machine a few weeks ago. This thing is much faster than my Octane! And no, the DM6 doesn't work. The mlquery program shows that it is there but the video daemon refuses to start.

Very nice! This looks fairly similar to Ian Mapleson's setup, SAS controller and all. Looks like it's nearly as tricked out as a Fuel can get, other than maybe a Firewire card.
Thanks! It may have a firewire card in it soon if the DM6 keeps refusing to cooperate!

Woohoo! Welcome to the 900 club! 8-) I think the membership just doubled. :D (anyone else have one?)

I just used an internal-only SAS card btw (4-port), from here .

What disks does your system have? I've been upgrading over time, now have a 300GB 15K system, 300GB 10K Data,
and a 1TB SATA.

Btw, have you tried measuring the power consumption?... *grin*

I use the very same cables that is supplied with that particular adapter and they're great! Fits both SAS and SATA drives on it.

I saw a processor module sell on E Bay so there is potentially three of them in existence. I just have the 146Gb 10K that came with it. I have a SATA drive that was an RMA return but I don't have a cable for the SAS controller that works. I have the one that turns 4 SATA connections into a 32pin connection, not the 32-pin into 4 SATAs. The one I need is wired crossover and this one is straight through. I just bought this one because it was $25. I had already been looking at that auction. :) I hooked up the Kill-a-Watt and it seems to pull around 250W. Not bad compared to the ONYX IR. ;)

I saw one sell for $700 a while back ... saw too late, I might add. So there must be some more floating around.
900 rocks, congrats :D

I assume the spare cables I received with my card are of no use? (re that auction)

Btw, anyone have a SFF8470/SFF8470 cable (or cables) I could borrow/buy/whatever please? I need to test out some SAS
cards I bought which only have external connectors, but they didn't come with any cables.

I'm afraid not. This is the card that I have. http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/product ... sas3080xr/ It requires SFF-8484 to SATA cables. :( When I get them I can hook up 8 internal drives though :)

That sounds like the same cable which came with my SAS3442X-R. No luck finding them?

8 internal? Heh, that should be fun. I hope the PSU will cope with it ok.

I would never put 8 in it. No need when you can hook up TB drives to it.

It would be ok if they're all SSDs. For mechanical drives though, the system would definitely need some PSU assistance to cope
with 8 internal drives.

Btw, I need to update the system summary, things have changed somewhat. ;) System disk is now a combined 60GB + 120GB
SSD, etc. Here's my diskperf in /var/tmp (this is effectively accessing the 120GB via the 3442X-R, which holds /usr and /var):

Is that with a single SSD or two in a RAID0?

The LSISAS3442X manual says it can do SAS at 3Gb/s speed (per lane), but
manual page 1-3 wrote:
Supports SATA as defined in the Serial ATA Specification, version 1.0.

That's only 150MB/s for SATA devices?

That was on one SSD, and SATA2 speed works fine; one of the BIOS updates supports it ok (P20 or P21, I forget).

The / is on a 60GB SSD in an ARS-2160 SCSI/SATA bridge box. df gives:

Code:
Filesystem             Type    kbytes       use       avail  %use Mounted on

diskperf isn't as fast on / of course, but it doesn't need to be, though 4K random I/O is still 10X better than any mechanical.

My main user account is on a 120GB SSD aswell. General data is on a 600GB 15K SAS (Seagate 15K.7, way faster than any SATA. 200MB+sec)
and a 1TB is my video archive (backup DivX dumps of DVD movies).

All the SSDs are OCZ Vertex2E. The later Vertex3 runs slower. V2E has firmware much better suited to IRIX.

This is most likely what is expected... The DM6 is, as with other video devices from the DM series, an OpenML only device.
So it has no way to speak to the "classic" IRIX video infrastructure like the video daemon.
The DM2/DM3 is mostly used with the discreet software; you will need something similar for the DM6, I think...

Discreet never supported the DM6, or the Fuel (not enough RAM).
