I co-administrate a IBM POWER-7 system with a buddy of mine. It's got 419 gigs of ram and 32 processors. So far we have not been able to get this system to burp, and one of our users is running a fairly complex text parsing application on it. They are super sweet. But....if you want Docker or LXC support, you need a little-endian POWER-8 machine. Docker doesn't run on big-endian systems sadly :(

So what I did was buy another O2 off eBay for $99, so I can use this one as parts, or that one if it doesn't work, or recondition both of them. Either way, I'm getting 2 O2s :p I calculated what it would be to buy skins from Ian, and it would cost more than another machine plus shipping from the UK. I've been looking around, and it's cheaper to get a cheap O2 than buy the skins individually.

Hmm. I just compiled SSH 7.4p1 on my O2, and it compiled just fine

No. I just compiled it. I didn't run any of the unit tests.

If I do another

./configure
./make
./make install

one more time, I'm going to loose it :P

I have gotten better with it though. I have all the most recent GNU build utils running, most recent SSH, Python 2.7.13 almost working, and gonna tackle the latest glib2 and from there gtk. I'm sure I can get gtk2 working, gtk3 might be a challenge. But from what I've been reading it's certainly possible

I'd like to package some of this up for the community, but I'm afraid it will cause conflicts with nekoware. I hate to have a fork of it, because install locations would be different and maybe some hurt feelings. I dunno. You guys can tell me what you want.

Porting is definitely a labor of love though.

I can host them on SDF and offer links. I'm packaging things according to that wiki page ( http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/Packaging_Software ) but the install location is /usr/local/* so as not to interfere with nekoware. Right now I have the recent gnu toolset compiled, I'm working on gtk2 so I can get the updated pidgin working, but taking a break from that because glib is angering me :p So right now I'm giving weechat a stab which will at least give my O2 something useful to do.

Nou...irssi sucks

Yeah. I'm not out to replace nekoware. It would be a big deal. But yeah, being able to contribute what I port would be cool.

Independent packages it is :D

I just don't like irssi. It's not really as intuitive as weechat is.

Some of this I need to redo, because when I started, I didn't know as much as I do now, and compiled it for mips3. Oops. Probably not a big deal, but not as efficient. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on about MIPSPro, and when things don't work out right, I've taken to individual project's IRC channels. I either get mild confusion, or all out excitement. :p

But once I target what I have for mips4, I'll start putting this up on SDF

What a fun machine. My first SGI was a used Indigo that came from a furniture manufacturer. I paid like $1300 for it, because it just started coming on the used market. It had the LG1, and then I upgraded it to an Elan. It was my daily driver for a long time. In high school, I took it with me for a presentation. I chose 3D graphics as my topic. I didn't prepare for it at all, but I put up FSN from Jurassic Park, and the classroom went ape-shit. Got an A+ with no work. It was awesome! :D

A buddy of mine works at Ames and is a sysadmin for Pleiades. Right now all their developers are doing other things. If I knew Fortran, this would be alot of fun!

So I installed 6.5.30 and nekoware GCC 4.7.1. I wrote a beautifully written (it's goddamn art) C++ Hello World program, and it compiled just fine. Which means....pstewart is right and nekoware GCC doesn't work completely in 6.5.22, which kinda screws you if you have an Indy.

At least my SGI isn't going to be tied up for 20+ hours tonight :D

AIX is my second favorite UNIXen after IRIX, but adding software to it is such a massive pain-in-the-ass. I co-manage a beefy ass POWER server with a buddy of mine, and we're eager to try it out.

I've search through the forum and found little. Maybe we need a sticky thread or something for icons.

I've ported some stuff and can't find icons (like the latest version of xchat)

Where does one find icon files? :D

When I upgraded to 6.5.30, it hashed Photoshop because of the DPS stuff, so I'm trying to reinstall it. I had it installed on 6.5.22, but I had to do something to the install script, and for the life of me I cannot remember what I did (maybe it will dawn on me during cocktail time). But this is what its' doing.

I have a directory, we'll call <pwd> with the installation files, and the install script. When I launch the script, it gives me this error at the end:

Your CD-ROM could not be read from <PWD>/photoshop.tar

*** Installation canceled ***

I'm banging my head trying to remember what I did, but no amount of banging is helping :(

Yeah, I tried moving it to /CDROM, but no such luck :(

tomvos wrote: Try to search for DPS and Display Postscript on nekochan. I think DPS was removed from later IRIX releases after 6.5.22. I remember I had to install this manually, but I'm not sure whether the required files had been on the Photoshop CD or on an older IRIX CD set.

Yeah. I saw the thread about DPS on IRIX 6.5.30, and that's kinda what I need to make Illustrator work.

Yeah, there are a couple forum posts. The problem is the Photoshop installer fails before it can install the DPS binaries :(

Thanks to hamei, I got this solved. Turns out, the Illustrator installers that are out in the wild lack the DPS stuff. You need an actual Illustrator ISO with all the needed bits. Once you get it all installed it works like a charm under 6.5.30 (and for some reason Photoshop started working). This pleases me because now I can import drawings into SoftImage :D

I have IPv6 setup on my network, and I set it up on my O2. I figured I'd have to fsck with it, but it Just Worked(tm). For being an older OS, it seems to have mature support for it. :D

Yeah. I've been really happy with 6.5.30. It has a few quirks, like all the PostScript stuff. But otherwise, it's been great.

That's impressive. Lessee 6.5.19 came out in 2003. I don't think Windows XP SP2 from 2004 had a complete IPv6 stack and I know Linux's was half-baked, and this seems to be pretty solid so SGI was certainly ahead of the curve.

There is a Tezro 350 up on there.

A Prism

An Origin that has been there for a while.

And alot of Altix 450 stuff which is useless without other components.

I have ATT and they provide native IPv6. A few tweaks to my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter, and voila...IPv6. IPv6 on IRIX has worked pretty flawlessly. I'm impressed.
