I finally received my new Octane some days ago and I'm triying to install xchat 2.4.0 from Nekochan freeeware.

When I'm trying to start xchat the program displays an error about pango and another one about fonts, I had a similar problem installing the same version for mips3 on my Indy.

I can use a workaround installing xchat 1.8.10 from freeware.sgi.com but the version is very old.

Could somebody tell me if it is possible make this version work ?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, this is the output:

octane 8% xchat

there was an error in the creation of:

I'm using IRIX 6.5.22m on an Octane2. I have deleted all the freeware installed and I have installed neko_xchat-2.4.0.tardist and necessary dependencies.

Thanks in advance.

I have checked that neko_pango-1.10.1.tardist is installed.

I have searched the file but it is absent on my system:

octane 5# find / -name "pango-querymodules"
octane 6#

How can I install this utility ?

----------------------------

Don't ask me how, but I have REINSTALLED the neko_pango-1.10.1.tardist pakage and now the binary file is there

Suggestions ?

I have installed a Matrox G200 (GXT130P) and it works like a charm in AIX and Linux.

I have tried to install AIX 1.3 in vmware but it doesn't work, you need an original system.

It's easier to buy an IBM Power System on eBay to enjoy AIX.

I tried to install Debian GNU/Linux on my Octane2 but I obtained several crashes booting from network (bootp).

I have read that Octane support is experimental, if somebody knows how to get it working please post it.

Edit:
I have found on Google several references about Gentoo working on Octane machines, but you can still find some suprises about stability:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~redhatter/mips/h ... 4/o32.html

I don't like Gentoo, you need too much time to get a system functional.

tillin9 wrote: @Chatuser - Yea, Debian's kernel is based on either Linux-MIPS or the mainline tree and hence won't work on an Octane. As I said, the necessary patches are in Gentoo's repositories. You can use a Gentoo kernel with Debian, but actually getting it on the Octane would be a little tricky. I'd recommend doing something like installing on an O2 or Indy (which Debian supports very well) then compiling a Gentoo kernel for the Debian disk and transplanting it into your Octane.

mmm ... nice experiment ;)

I have an external disk with Debian for my Indy, I could test this installation with a new Gentoo kernel on my Octane.

It sounds like a Frankenstein film, you try to make a functional body using several parts of another bodies.

I've got an IBM 7044-170 with dual boot with two hard disks.

The machine originally came with a GXT4000P card that doesn't work on Linux. I tested two video cards:

S3 Trio64V+: identified on AIX as GXT110P, this card is no longer supported on AIX 5.3 (read AIX 5.3 release notes), but it works fine on AIX 5.1 and Linux.

Matrox G200: identified on AIX as GXT130P, it also works fine on AIX 5.3 and Linux.

So I choosed the Matrox G200 video card for AIX 5.3 and Linux. When Linux boots a nice penguin is shown on the screen, but you can't use the keyboard and mouse until Xwindow is started.

I also tested a Matrox MGA 2164W Millennium II on Debian GNU/Linux, but image got corrupted when I moved the mouse and colors changed suddenly on the image.

My two cents: go to a PC technical service and ask for an old Matrox G200 video card, you will get it totally free.

Well, this "accepted industry practice" rings a bell: http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=16724127

I think the "industry" is killing its own propietary hardware and software using these "practices".
