The collected works of Vanne

I wouldn't blow the compression connectors directly with compressed air, that's how I lost my first octane.

Hi, I am going to be digging up my Octane2, and i will have to transport it to Dubai. (Hand luggage I think at the moment) thing is, there is no way on his earth I will be taking my old 21 inch sgi screen. Just not possible.

I will be buying a new screen over in Dubai for this, but my question is will any of the new LCD screens out there fit on my octane. It has the standard graphics ATM, with no texture ram, but will be upgrading it to vpro. I did see the vpro still also has the 13w3 connector. I know I can get a 13w3 connector to VGA, but will my Octane still need sync on green?

What are my options?

I'd prefer to just buy an el cheapo LCD screen from local nerd shop, but even if I go for the sw1600, will I still need the card for my octane?

Thanks for any info :)

Well I am partway there.. I took front cover, Cherokee psu and caddy's/ram and a CPU upgrade over last time, now I just have to get the main housing. Am thinking of leaving the video solution in Sydney as .i have a Vpro V8 on the way to Dubai, so probably won't need the extra 5kgs that the older impact graphics is.

Hope they will let me carry the "box" on? : /

Hi, just wondering what is reasonable to pay for a v8 that slots into the octane2?
I've seen a few on fleabay, but they charge through the roof for shipping..

Also, is there any performance increase over the top impact with trams installed? Some of those tram modules are getting bloody expensive on fleabay...

So there was a Fuel listed on Ebay yesterday, kinda around the price mark i could grab it at, so i did.

Pretty basic spec, but has

MIPS R14000 600Mhz cpu
4GB ram
SGI VPro V10 display adapter
SCSI 15K rpm 146GB SCA 80pin hdd + 36GB 68pin 10K hdd
Yamaha SCSI cd writer
SGI RAD digital audio controller
SGI/3Com 3C996 gigabit network adapter

I also yesterday grabbed the SW1600 with an LVDS to DVI signal convertor card. Very much hoping that the Fuel can run the SW1600?

The main reason for me grabbing the Fuel is that since moving to Dubai, my Octane has been in pieces and i don't currently have a monitor that can run sync on green. So i guess this is an easy way for me to get a Irix system up and running.

Guess i should sell my Octane parts after the Fuel arrives.

Any idea how this fuel will compare performance wise with my Octane? Dual 600's V8 1.5gb

And its been a while since booting any flavour of Irix, what are the go to apps these days? any good browsers?

Wow, that all sounds rather positive. Thanks guys.
I payed 500 for the fuel, and organising my own shipping. Speaking if which, are there any must do's and don'ts in regards to shipping this box? My octane suffered a bend connector when I shipped that 6 years ago..

Any info and help will be very much appreciated..

Actually very surprised that Firefox is being maintained for Irix. With FireWire on the fuel, can I use an old school iSight cam from an old FireWire Mac?

And can u guys confirm that the keyboard and mouse are still PS2 compatible?

Thanks for the info on the sw1600, Soo hoping that that is going to work.

Thanks for all the reply's guys, the Fuel has taken a bit of a back step atm due to the limited desk real estate that I have going on atm. That and I am extremely snowed under at work atm.. cant wait for a few weeks of R&R to start having a dig through this box. BTW, I think I am gonna get rid of this LVDS monitor, and grab a nice new-ish one. Does the Fuel still need Sync on Green to start the monitor? or can I just use any DVI based monitor these days?
I have a apple cinema display lying around somewhere...

Nearly forgot to mention, I used to code in an IDE pretty much, so that's not gonna float on here then, however, I also do quite a bit of fiction writing, so that might be where ill be using the box... as long as its not too loud...

Man, that blows... :(

I had some skins, but my brother chucked em out last year. :(

I guess that was the overall end result all along, 400 euros for a dual CPU is actually bloody cheap.
