The August '06 dskless_client is type '[oc]' --> an overlay.

The required nfs.sw.dskless_client base system is part of nfs.sw, but apparently not installed by default.

But look, there's a 'I', hence nfs.sw is installed, but not nfs.sw.dskless_client.

Unless you're headless (with no chance of a reprieve), the process might be slightly more user-friendly if tried with the Software Manager GUI.

You can just clip the drop arrow and see what is and isn't included in a default install - sounds like the diskless client isn't.

nfs.sw is installed, but not everything.

Here's the output on my O350:

You have to explicitly install nfs.sw.dskless_client from the base NFS disc

Jan-Jaap, I understand what you're saying, but look at the first post, I'm trying to install nfs.sw.dskless_client, and it just doesn't install anything, so I'm very confused as of what steps are required to add nfs.sw.dskless_client to my system.

No, you're trying to install an overlay for which the base system is missing. You've got nfs.sw installed, but that doesn't mean nfs.sw.* is installed. Some parts are optional and have to be explicitly selected. I would expect a conflict too, in your case (attempt to install overlay with missing base), but apparently it simply deselects your choice.

You should try to install nfs.sw.dskless_client from the 06-1998 NFS for IRIX 6.2 - 6.5 disc, which will result in a conflict (because everything else is at 6.5.30), and then resolve that conflict by feeding the 6.5.30 overlay disc.

Since you only have the Onyx2 in your sig I'm not sure what machines you're using this on, but keep in mind that IP27 isn't supported as a diskless client under IRIX.

Nah, that's for an IP35, truth is, I realized that nfs.sw.dskless_client is useless, nfs root works well with or without it. That probably means it would work on the IP27 as well, I'll give it a shot when I have a minute.

I haven't gone deep into it, but my guess is that it might be some part of the magic that makes the share tree work on different SGI machines/graphics. If you're just doing an unshared NFS root then it probably isn't needed.

Ah right, makes sense.
