Holy. Fucking. Shit. New in box ss20s for sale on ebay (!) - Page 1

quantity 20 of these are for sale:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sun-Sparcstatio ... 4ac045eea4

and:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sun-Sparcstatio ... 589ab166e0

I guess I have found the cosmetically perfect ss20 I was looking for ?

edit: they are aurora cases with 8mb vsimms installed. Amazing.
Wow - that is pretty neat! But I've got one squirreled away somewhere, and at $230 (I have the other bits) I'm not too tempted...

That is a large quantity for new old stock in 2013. Pretty impressive looking if its not a scam. I got rid of mine a long time ago, I don't think I'll be picking one up but I would be interested in pictures if anyone else does. :)

Despite having an SS20 behind me at the moment, I am somewhat tempted at that price. I've seen one seller asking $200 for the 8MB VSIMM alone! :!: In that context, this doesn't look like such a bad deal.

Yes, the 8mb vsimm is the real value there ... those are not so easy to find.
I have a few if someone needs any.

Just in the interest of keeping disappointment to a minimum, the pictured system has neither an SM51 nor an 8 MB VSIMM. It has a cacheless SuperSPARC (i.e. SM50, certainly no faster than 50 MHz) and a 4 MB VSIMM, which isn't capable of 24-bit visuals at resolutions over 1024x768.

I knew there should have been another large chip on that CPU module, but I had no idea on the VSIMM - what gave it away, all the chips I didn't notice were missing on one side of the PCB?

Yes, but 4MB VSIMM are enough if you stick to 1152x900, or do not mind 8bit color depth at 1280x1024 or larger resolutions. A 4MB VSIMM can still display 1600x1280 or 1920x1080, after all.

I'd like a LX better.

Man someone bought 2. $289 is nuts. They are opening them up and installing parts too. I am not sure that really qualifies for any extra value. At that point what is the actual difference between new and used ? The box it came in ?

That is about the worst spec'd SS20 you can have too.
I found a guy selling 2x IDE cdrom drives and 1200 (yes twelve hundred) baud modems for like $98. And people were buying them! I even sent an email to the seller asking how he arrived at these prices. The guy said his job was just to list the items for his boss who sets the prices. It seems eBay is no longer a buyers market for used items. Its only good if you're selling.

Factory spec'd sure, but for maximum pain entertainment I wonder if the "up to 33MHz" SM20 would function in an Aurora... Image

No, the SS20 can not lower its MBus speed below 40MHz, thus SM20 and SM30 can not run in them. The crappiest module you can run in an SS20 is the SM40.

A few what? Full systems? VSIMMs? Something else?

From your message's position in the thread, it could be just about anything.

One of the reasons I got fired from my job.
I was paid sub-minimum wage to put prices up for "what you thing is good", then get either yelled at by the boss for such a low selling price or yelled at for listing items that never sell. :(

Those two are mine :)

The key here is not the spec, but the fact that I was searching for a cosmetically perfect ss20. Now I have two.
Cool, what are you going to run on it?
