I recall when I tried to run Gentoo on a R12k400 octane. Got it installed, but had no X support at the time.
The hardware that I'll try this on again is a Sun Ultra, with the Elite M3 or some other 'supported' frame buffer.
FreeBSD on Sun SPARC looks promising though ...
