Onyx2 IR2E: 4xR12k 400, 8Gb, IR2E, 2x18+3x73GB HD

Hi folks !

Thanks to maxsleg, I'm now the happy owner of IMO one of the most desirable sgi... an Onyx2 IR2E. I finally decided to do the trip to his place to pick it up. 8 hours, 80kg and 800km later (+ a lot of spare parts and other gifts), I still think that it was a good idea. It was a long trip but was worth it. Thanks Paul !

So, here are the outputs.

Looks like you've got a nodeboard in slot N2 with directory RAM in it, and one without in N1. Directory RAM is rather useless in a deskside Onyx2 since it cannot be (numa)linked into a larger configuration, and directory RAM is only required for large (32+ CPU's ?) configurations

BetXen wrote: Hope you like it. I do...

I'm a sucker for Onyx2's. Crimsons too

PS: If you're ever looking for 7/64" hex (inbus) keys in Europe and can't find them online, go to a garage that deals with US cars or motorcycles (Harley Davidson etc.). They have them too.
Now this is a deep dark secret, so everybody keep it quiet :)
It turns out that when reset, the WD33C93 defaults to a SCSI ID of 0, and it was simpler to leave it that way... -- Dave Olson, in comp.sys.sgi

Hi JJ,

Yes, I've seen that, but didn't remove the boards up to now. I will search for an imbus key and have a look at it asap.
I will open a new thread about nice 3D softwares suggestions pretty soon. As you have some Onyx2, I hope you will give me some hints.

Very nice machine  I also think that an Onyx2 with IR in any configuration is one of the most desirable computers ever built  And i also know the trips to get these... ;)

I have finally received a 7/64" key and removed the directory memory. No more "SYS-DEGRADED" warning, of course.

Please tell me where the error is... : The key (15cm long with a rubber T handle) came from the UK for 8 Swiss francs shipping included. The cheapest I've found on a swiss online shop was 25CHF + shipping (for a small L-shaped one). Ahhh, globalization ! :o

I've also installed all the Onyx2 demos and am looking at them. What do you suggest me to install to unleash the IR2E and get some fun ? 3D demos, games, softs ? I would also like to display some FEA results. Which soft do you think is the best for that ? Paraview or sth like that ? Maybe you also know a good DICOM viewer ?

Thanks in advance.
