Hey Guys,
I have two SGIs in here:

• Octane2, Dual CPU 400MHZ R12K, V12
• Onyx2 Deskside, Quad CPU 400MHZ R12K, IR2

now the question is, can I bull in the harddisk from the Octane into the Onyx (because it fits straight in) and install irix with the onyx. Then remove the disk and put it back to the octane ?... Why... because I don't have a CD Drive for my Octane, and there is no one to get over here, the Onyx has an internal drive, and I really don't know how to do a network installation.

Does anyone know if this will work that way ?

thx PymbleSoftware for the tut.. I already found some tuts for network installation but this is too freaky by just reading it...

anyway would it work if I simply copy the irix install disks on my second harddisk in the octane and use the hd as my cd drive to install...
is there a tut for ?

my secound disk is Disk(0,2), filesystem dks0d2s7

Well, thanks anyway...
u know I'm more the user guy than a system admin, I just want to run my old Flame on that box, the system got dirty over the years so I just want to install a fresh irix and setup a fresh flame system... I have done some O2 installations with IRIX 10 years ago, but I always did it with a cd drive...

I got just macs here no linux or windoof, and also the onyx2 is in another room upper floor not connected to the network, it's a little difficult to setup this box as Server just for installing.. I'hv better try to get an external CD Drive... If there is anybody, who want to sell an external CD Drive for less.. let me know, I'm from Europe ;-)

thx guys, I'll try it.. I'm allready coping the disks to the onyx2 and till now everything is working fine, will tar all disks together an transfer this to my mac...

I allready but on:
• 6.5.30 Install Tools and Overlays 1
• 6.5.30 Overlays 2
• 6.5.30 Overlays 3
• Applications (from 6.5.30 bundle, I guess its the 2006)
• Complementary Applications (also from the 6.5.30 bundle)
• 6.5 Foundation 2 (released 06/98)
• 6.5 Development Libraries (released 06/98)
• ONC3/NFS Version3 (released 05/99)


it sucks a little bit because I'm missing 2 disks
• 6.5 Foundation 1
• 6.5 Development Foundation

is it important that the both Foundation disks has the same release date, or is it almost the same ?
and are the 6.5 Applications Nov 2001 really nessesary, because I don't think I have it... Just have the Application from the 6.5.30 bundle and the one of the 6.5.28 bundle...

Hey all my disks are original from SGI with release date and serial number on !!! So means that I already paid for it, and I just lost 2 disks of it... just want to get it done.. ! I mean this is just old stuff and not a new distribution, by the way it's just working to SGI.. so I also had to buy a SGI for it right ?

always shows me: Can't set up network connection to host 192.168.2.2: rshd: Premission denied.

there is also a tricky thing going on with this: if i start com.apple.rshd and rlogind it shows me this:

if I repeat the list in about 5 secounds it keeps the numbers in front of, but after 10 - 15 seconds it shows 0 in front of like this:

also if I start it and hit enter with the install path on the octane in the same second it dosn't work.. always set it back to 0,
I also tried to set the .rhosts with + but its all the same message on the octane: Can't set up network connection to host 192.168.2.2: rshd: Premission denied.

Now I have set the .rhosts with + and chmod all files and folders of the install dir and the dist dir to 777

But it still shows me the same Error on the Octane, I also restarted my mac, with no success...

@josehill - Thanks for the suggestion. I tried this when I was trying to get mine installed as I'd read it could be a problem. I couldn't find any changes that made any difference. For completeness though, here are the settings as recommended for linux:

tried this one on my mac, after that the octane shows me an new error message:

Can't set up network connection to host 192.168.2.2: select: protocol failure in circuit setup.

Hi guys...
today I was powering on my SGI VW540, it was off for about a year or so and was working before... but it shows me just this blue maintenance terminal rolling up some tests in a loop... I don't know how to stop, so I took a pic of it... it's passing everything without the Real-Time Clock it says:

Real-Time Clock   -- FAILED : error code 0x00000100   Date is out of valid range

Results Summary: 12 passed, 1 failed.

I tired to replace the small round 3V Battery but its the same again, the the error still appears, also the test is running in loop, workstation don't boot.. ? any ideas...
Is there a major reset for that ?
