Are you sure your media is good?

FYI if you can't mount the CD on a running Solaris system, it's no good. You should be able to get at the setup_install_server scripts, at a minimum.

This isn't always the best idea. I did some tests years ago on my Plextor Premium, which could verify the burn quality, and after setting the burn speed to low the error rate raised dramatically. I would 52x CD-Rs with at least 16x-20x.

I was going to suggest UNIXPackages.com , but they only have packages for SPARC and x86. Might want to dig around on Bill Bradford's site SunHelp.org and see if you can find something there. If not, and nobody here has a better suggestion, ask on one of the mailing lists at SunHelp.

It would be great if I could do dual boot Solaris/AIX.
However I tried AIX 4.1.3, 4.1.4, 4.1.5, 4.2.1, 4.3.3 and each time I got illegal instructions, abort trap.
Do I need to upgrade the firmware, it's ppcbug1 version 1.1 or do I need some special version of AIX from Motorola ?

Does modern AIX run on anything other than IBM hardware? I've never heard of anybody doing it. IBM software generally only runs on their machines. Not that that means anything for AIX, just a data point.

plain IBM aix will never run on motorola hardware...you need aix for bull estrella series which includes the right devices for the powerstack.

Not anymore. Back in the day, however, there were hardware-specific versions. As mentioned the PowerStack needs the Groupe Bull-specific release, and 4.1.4.0/1 and 4.1.5 were available in special versions for the Apple Network Server. (Personal note: I loved the ANS. My server for 14 years was an ANS 500 until it got too slow and had some intermittent hardware faults, but I still have it and it still suffices for CDE and playing around on.)

Tried with Bull Estrella AIX 4.2.3 cd still hangs on boot. Well, it will continue to run Solaris 2.5.1 :)
