Found: Dual 600MHz CPU for Octane

My friend is jealous of my setup, and wants a 600MHz card for his Octane2. If someone has one, he's tasked me with getting one for him. PM with price and shipping to ZIP 23227.

you'd prepare yourself for a shock, i was asked for 500 euro for such an items, plus shipping
I know they can run pricy. I got the one in my sig for considerably less, so I'm hoping a miracle happens for my friend here too.

I don't know if jscrew is still around?? I got my 2x 600 from him for something right around US $250 a few years ago (from a post on this forum).

No idea what the prices are now.
for my IP30/Octane2 , i got
  • 2xR12K@400Mhz cpu module for 200 euro
  • XIO24_PCI_cartridge for 150 euro

i contacted OlmoSystem and they sold them.

200 euro is very expensive for a CPU module , as 150 euro is very expensive for a XIO24_PCI_cartridge , but i needed them as i am a gentoo/mips developer and more specifically i was working about the linux kernel (2.6.17.rc4+hacks) in order to add a PCI_USB_card on the IP30 machine

2x600 $520 with shipping, 1x600 $170 with shipping

Problem is that these are some of the fastest CPU options ever released for Octane, and as such there is still reasonable demand for them from people who want to upgrade existing systems rather than replacing them outright - hence the high prices. Same goes with most of the accessories for SGI systems unfortunately. Hence why MaxIMPACT for Indigo2 sells for a lot more than MXI for the Octane, despite both being almost identical technology underneath.

The faster dual-CPU options for Octane are particularly sought after as the only other multi-processor options are Onyx/Origin (which are large and noisy), or Tezro (expensive as there was no faster MIPS machine released by SGI). Had SGI continued to produce MIPS kit after the Tezro, things might be different of course.

shipping to europe from USA means … 22% of VAT in order to import the item (to italy, in my case)
so $520 USD is ~ 460 euro, + 22% = ~ 560 euro for a CPU Module X____X
@ Trippynet
which is your Applications target ? i mean what App do you run on your Octane2/2xR14K ?

You forgot shipping cost. Octane CPUs are not exactly light weight.

And then (insult to injury): import tax on shipping cost. Whoever thought that one up deserves to be shot.
Now this is a deep dark secret, so everybody keep it quiet :)
It turns out that when reset, the WD33C93 defaults to a SCSI ID of 0, and it was simpler to leave it that way... -- Dave Olson, in comp.sys.sgi

Yeah, I know. Luckily DHJJ is in Chicago, so its not that bad on shipping. If my friend can afford it, he'll probably go for it.

I'm afraid I don't have an Octane2, just an Indigo2 and a Fuel. I use mine for music (XMMS), retro gaming, bits of scripting in Perl, running stuff like Dillo and Firefox, and other general experimenting. Not really what SGIs were originally intended for I know :)

they are just my considerations about the price which i think that it is too expensive
about shipping, i sold out an octane2 2xR10K CPU module, sent to canada from italy, the shipping price was 60 euro
