Onyx 2 Problem

Hello!
I have a little prob with my onyx 2. (quad 300Mhz IP31)
I read 9A code on one of the Node boards.
It seem to be a CPU problem.
I have switch my cpu module of the "faulty" board with the other one IP31 that works well.
my two cpu modules seem to work perfectly!
I'm new in "deskside" world!
Does a node board is paired with CPU or you can mix an IP31 with all modules (400/500?).
I have tried to let only 2 ram modules on the bad one and same scenario!
I believe i have one IP31 board dead?!

You can mix IP31 nodeboards with differing CPU speeds. You can even mix IP27 and IP31 nodeboards (as long as the IP27 CPUs aren't the 180MHz variety). The SGI tech papers mention the nodeboard with the slowest cpus should be placed in the first (lowest numbered) slot.

OK! great news!
In nekowiki, it seem that 500Mhz HIMM have a special IP31 nodeboard? Just a different Flash/PROM revision?

Your initial post was a little tough to follow. Are you wanting to mix nodeboards with processors of differing speeds, or swap processors from one nodeboard to another?

I've never has the privilege of having a 500MHz IP31 nodeboard, but if the refence in the nekowiki is this one ....

Code: Select all

Near the end of its life, a variant of the IP31 board that could utilize the 500 MHz R14000 with 8 MB L2 caches was made available.
.....the safe bet would be to obtain the 500MHz PIMM with the original nodeboard still attached.

Yes, my first subject was to know if my nodeboard is dead with 9A code?
Probably yes cause the cpu on the "dead" board works great on the second board.
In add, just i want to know if all HIMM modules can be swaped or if the last dual 500 need prom upgrade or a different IP31 board?

Absolutely. Every time you mess with these things you risk damaging it, and 500MHz nodes are hard to find.

That said, I have a 4x 500MHz R14K Onyx2 deskside and one of the nodes failed at some point. Fortunately for me, it was the nodeboard and not the HIMM so it used an IP31 with 250 or 300MHz CPUs as a donor. Worked just fine.

Beware that some late model option(s) (I think HD video IO) require a nodeboard with a fairly late rev. XBow on the IP31, which in practical terms means CPUs >= 400MHz. So to be on the safe side, use a 400MHz as a donor if you must buy only the HIMM.
To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. ( IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report )
thank a lot!
I will pray to found a dual 500 with ip31 at "reasonable" price!

...I do this on the command promp in diag mode or via a terminal linked to the diag port?
My diag mode is very strange!!!
When all nodeboards pass the test, IRIX boot, i can access to general diagnostic menu (before complet the opening).
When i clic to diagnostic icon, a command promp try to be opened and immediatly close itself after! strange! My octane do the diagnostic procedure very well.
strange!!!
