Solved! Problem installing Irix on a Indigo 3K (SNI)

Hi,

I have a "Siemens" Indigo 3K (RW320) and i would like to install IRIX on it ... (4.0.5 or 5.3)

first i tried using my SCSI CDROM´s but both are to new and have no jumper for "512", so the indigo does not like them... (although my Indigo 4K does)

As i also own an Indigo2, and an O2, the next thing to try was to install IRIX over a network.

I followed the (very good) instructions of "Ian Mapleson" and on "majix's Obsolete Stuff" ...

I setup my Indigo2 (fresh 6.5 install with NFS) as the installserver (IP=192.168.1.6) and i setup the Indigo 3K with IP=192.168.1.12.
I mounted the Install CD on the Indigo 2 on /CDROM.

I was able to boot sash.IP12 and fx.IP12 over the network (using boot -f bootp()192.168.1.6:/CDROM/stand/fx.IP12).

If i choose to Install Software from the Indigo 3K Maintenance menu i have to answer "remote tape?" with "no" and then i am asked for a server IP and directory
I answer with "192.168.1.6:/CDROM/dist" and the install program is loaded over the network and the install menu is displayed. Also the default inst location is set to this directory.

But if i then choose "from" and the default "192.168.1.6:/CDROM/dist" i get the following network error: (see pic)

I tried this process with the Indigo 2 and the O2 as server, i tried a naked 6.5 and a 6.5.22 and i tried to install 4.0.5 and 5.3 everytime i got the same error ...

Every help is welcome!

Tom,

I may be wrong here, but I doubt that you have to specify another software location. Just type
Code:
install default
and then
Code:
go
. IRIX 5.3 consists of only one CD afair, so there is no need to
Code:
open
another distribution and I prsume that you shouldn't have probs with unresolved conflicts. It's been a while that I installed my Indigo, but I think that I did it in the way described above.
Maybe someone with more grip on installing 5.3 on IP12 is able to correct me if I'm wrong here.

I'm a bit puzzled about the
Quote:
thing. Maybe the problem is that the contents of the mounted CD are not accessible for other users than root. Have you tried copying the contents of the CD to the Netboot machine and using the respective dist directory (with sufficient permissions) instead of directly using the mounted CD?

Sounds like the network configuration is somewhat broken. Start a shell and check with ifconfig and netstat -rn if the interfaces and routes are correct.
The miniroot probably don't read your IP configuration from the nvram. You can set the IP address of your host in the admin menu of the inst program.

The IP should be sent over with the bootp requests.

You've followed the SGI remote install guide to the letter, right?

On a sad note it looks like SGI has broken or eliminated the online TechPubs for 6.3, 6.2 and 5.3. Are there any mirrors around?

Still there, just removed from index. I have a copy, should they remove it in the future.

Setting up an install server is described here: http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi ... /ch02.html
This assumes you're using IRIX as install server (not Linux, etc....). In your case, it sounds like TFTP is working (this is how you get the miniroot), but RSH isn't, or the .rhosts file on the install server doesn't include root@indigo_ip_addr. This is why you're not getting to the software distribution.

When in doubt use wireshark to see where it hangs. The wiki contains some about install servers too, although I think it mostly focuses on the extra hurdles you have to take if you want to use something other than IRIX as install server.

I used to use Linux as an install server, but at every software upgrade something was broken in new and fascinating (not) ways, and of course you only find out when it's too late. In the end I gave up and now I'm using my Origin 200 as install server.

Thanks for all your tips and advice!

It turned out not to be a network problem at all!

First i zeroed out the HD on the Indigo (But i do not know if this did the trick, i don´t think so... but maybe? i had fx´d it a few times with 4.0.5 and 5.3)

Then in inst of 4.0.5 i choose "admin"
@diegel: thanks for the tip, but it seems there is no possibility to change the IP, or hostname in 4.0.5 in the admin menu
but there is a "set" command and this listed a few parameters including one called i think "dist" which was set to "tape" and the description said "Most recent installation source" after i changed it to "cd" everything suddenly worked!
(PS: i used setenv=notape before but without luck)

Maybe the zeroing of the HD did the trick or the changing of the "dist" parameter ...

Now 4.0.5 is installed on the 3K and i love it... :-)

Thanks to you all!
