Quality Nonsense, indeed.
I hope someone at least buys AltaVista at some point and does something nice with it.

Er, for most Alphas you're going to need to have that moment of silence before you turn it on, or after you turn it off...
okay good point

A bit of a punch in the stomach, that.
I remember visiting the DEC booth at the very first recruiting fair I attended while still in school. UT Austin. The job fair was held at the Frank Erwin center.
While a student research assistant, I also administered two AlphaServers at UT. They were non-trivial to maintain, but I somehow muddled through. That was my first exposure to CDE.
I recently started reading "DEC is Dead, Long live DEC", but had to put that on hold as I got distracted with other things. Here's the URL if someone else is interested:
This thread is a good - if somewhat depressing - reminder that I need to finish that...

Seconded - I've been reading that off and on the last couple months (OpenGL ES 3.0 has taken priority lately), but it's a great read for the personal insights DEC employees gave.

Turn it on? Why would you ever turn it off?

Mine's pretty quiet, since I got rid of that first-gen 10K RPM drive.
