SPARCBook 1 TADPOLE revival

I lost my my mind (and my time) in trying to restore SOLARIS 1.0.1 (original cd) on this old "military" laptop.
I have a TFTP server configured on my sparcstation 20 (inetd configured), a tranceiver DB15/RJ45 on the SBook, a working switch.
WHen i restore from ethernet the minifs file coming from OEM CD, the transfer seem to be working (...loading) but FAILED at the end of transfer. (when trying to launching the file stored on the swap partion i presume).
Don't know, here, what to do...
TFTP config line problem? bad tranceiver? (all links are mounted on the switch).
The HDD is not the stock one. The partition table is created via the utility menu and seem to be correct.
...The last way will be to found a T338 // to scsi adapter for puting a cdrom on this capricious thing...

My octane had a similar problem when copying the miniroot over to the swap. It would always fail. I did a format of the hard drive and then it worked fine.
Can you run tcpdump on the tftp server machine (tcpdump ether host <ethernet address of the tadpole machine>) to check that a tftp transfer really occurs?

If the transfer seems to go well but nothing happens after it seems completed, you might want to make the file unpadded by appending a few random bytes to it, in order for it no longer to be a multiple of 512 bytes. Some PROMs do not handle multiples of 512 bytes well in their tftp code...

Nice piece of kit, jammaster. Hope you get it running fine!

Thk Hakimoto ^_^,

Miod, you save my life...But...

TFTP work with 128b and 512b blocks...
the minifs binary is not a multiple of 512.
I have edited on x86 machine the binary provides on the oem restoration CD (!!!) and filled the end of file with 00 to ensure a good size.

Before all of that, i have sniffed the ethernet traffic to see the activity between my 2 IPs (SparcStation 20 and SparcBook).
The last TFTP blocks are 189b lengh and of course (!) retried !!! first parts are 512b lengh.
God, thank to this sniffer...

So, the transfer via the "ethernet restore" on tadpole is successfully ... (transfer DONE !!! god) ...
But after...

NOTHING!

I must see a restore menu/options ... But here ... NOTHING
DAMN!

Now that you have transferred the recovery image to the swap partition, you need to boot off it. Have you tried to boot it afterwards?

yes, i have try "boot alternate file" where ou need to specify the hd, the partition and the file.
I have try:
- 0 0 (main part) minifs
- 0 1 (swap part) minifs
- 0 2 (?) minifs
- 0 3 (user part) minifs

If "minifs" contains a miniroot filesystem, which you have written to partition 1, I rate it unlikely that the name of the file within that miniroot filesystem which contains the kernel you are meant to boot is also "minifs". it may be called 'munix' though. have a look at minifs in a hex editor, you'll be able to find the root directory and filenames pretty easily.

Indeed. According to the SPARCbook 2 documentation, which probably applies to the SPARCbook 1 as well in this case:

tadpole wrote: When the minifs has been loaded onto the SPARCbook successfully, the following menu will be displayed:

Code: Select all

1> Boot Default File
2> Boot Alternate File
3> Change Default File

Enter Choice> 2
Select the option to boot an alternate file and then, from the next menu, select the option to boot from the hard disk:

Code: Select all

New Source for Boot File
1> Hard Disk
2> Ethernet
3> SCSI

Enter Choice> 1
Then when prompted, enter the following file specification:

Code: Select all

Enter file spec> 0 1 vmunix

...thank Guys...
Working great with the file 0 1 /vmunix
Strange, on the sbook 1 user manual, this isn't documented? ...

Now, i have a mini kernel/terminal but ... when trying to download the files i have an "access denied".

I presume, a port blocked on the SS20 ???
This seem to be the port 1023.
I have "snooped" the traffic.

Restoration of the filesystem is likely done using rcp, thus it requires the server to accept rsh connections as root. You might want to temporarily put a .rhosts file with "+" in the root's home directory on the server, for the time of the restoration process.
