IRIX and Software

Just wanted to put this out there, I recently acquired to an Indy I wanted to get up and running. After installing 6.5 I went to sign up for an account at the SGI website. Accounts can no longer be created there and I had to contact the support line, there the fellow was kind enough to create an account for me as there was a single download available for IRIX after changes they made last fall. I then asked about the 6.5.22 overlay which had previously been available, he didn't know and opened a ticket to look into it. After the holidays I call them back and found that the overlay would no longer be available as parts of it were licensed and SGI didn't want to continue to pay those licensing fees for software that was no longer supported.

I just wanted to put this out so that people would be aware of it.

There's some irony because 6.5.22 was itself missing some components that SGI no longer wanted to pay to license (like Display Postscript). But pretty much all commercial Unix products included code from AT&T, Microsoft, and Sun or OSF.
