Sun ultra 80

I love this workstation!
I'd like to buy one but just to know:
What is the best graphic card for this system?
Elite3D-M6, XVR-1000? (official, unofficial? ... The workstation is badged with the framebuffer installed)
How do it perform opengl with huge texture workload? as well as an SGI octane Odyssey card?

Thank a lot!
:Octane2: V12 4G 2x600Mhz :Indigo2IMP: MAXImp 512M 195Mhz :Onyx2: IR2E 2G 4x300Mhz ... Intergraph TDZ2000 GL2 4110GT ... IBM 5162 ... PowerMAC 9600/300 ... Quadra 840AV ... PowerMAC G5 Quad ... AlphaStation 255/300

The XVR-1000 is the best bet on the Ultra 80, if the one you're going to buy has the framebuffer, that's the worst so you want to upgrade for sure if you can find one for a reasonable price which I'd say would be no more than 50 USD. As far as texture workloads in OpenGL, it's got 256 meg of dedicated texture memory, so, as long as you stay below that it should be pretty good. Keep in mind you're talking about a 15 year old graphics card running on a machine that maxes out at 450MHz. Here's Sun's XVR-1000 user guide:

Best SunOS.
On my ss20, I prefer solaris 8 than 9 ... Same thing with 4 cpus @ 450mhz?

Really? Four CPUs? I see a guy who's got two for sale in San Josie for US $395, tempting...

If you're knowing the later products with UltraSPARC III(+), named Blade 1000 and 2000 then you're able to imagine that the housing is originated from the Ultra 80 lines of workstations. I owned one myself years ago and it's still an impressive workstation system, completely outdated ok, but able to run 4 threads in hardware simultaneously in comparison to faster Blade 1k/2k successors which were able of "only" two (in hardware).

There were some quad processor workstations by Sun, e.g.
- Sparcstation 10, 20
- Ultra 450 (same housing as Enterprise 450, but bigger footprint)
- Ultra 80

Best graphics for Ultra 80 in general i.m.o. is XVR-1200 (3Dlabs)
but best UPA graphics should be the mentioned XVR-1000
Sun SPARCstation 2GX (SPARC V7, 1990)
Sun Blade 2000 w/ XVR-1000 (SPARC V9, 2002)
The XVR-1200 is the same card as 3DLabs wildcat 6210.
A very capable opengl card for it's time!
the XVR-1000 seem to be a better choice in Ultra 80.
A lot of ultra 80 are sold with Elite3D. I don't know how they performs? as good as an intergraph 4210, sgi v12 or HP fx10???
...And you are right! the blade 1000/2000 share the same BIG case like the U80!
