issue with 3 netboards on Impact

hi guys
i am using my friend's Impact machine, which comes with 3 lan
- lan0: builtin lan
- lan1: Phobos ISA
- lan2: Phobos GIO64

Irix seems to have issues with them, the desktop is working so slow.
My friend has configured lan0 as static IP 192.168.1.28, net mask 255.255.255.0, something that should be "common" for a workstation, lan1 and lan2 are not configured

first things: i can't put NIS off
second things: i get an incredible speedup in Destop tasks (1) if i put the network Off

i am trying to understand
1) how insane is to have 3 lan installed (i haven't understood why he has put them on)
2) if they can work

what do you think ? any suggestion ?

i am on IRIX 6.5.19

(1) Destop tasks: cliccking on "console" takes 10 second to open a console
if i put the network Off, it takes less than 1 second

on the boot login takes 20 second to display Destop icons
if i put the network Off, it takes less than 1 second

change /etc/nsswitch.conf so hosts: has files first, before anything else, and make sure the local hostname and IP appear in /etc/hosts. then fix /etc/resolv.conf to list a name server that you can actually communicate with (or remove it if you don't have any name server).

nsswitch.conf is also where you can remove references to NIS.
